Text of the page (random words):
i decided of course to bash my way through developing a script in a language i didn t have a guide to using the later heavily modified language s language guide as if such a thing were a nail and i had a very big hammer didn t i the only thing that made this contemplable was that a list of the pagemaker v4 2 script keywords was included in the pagemaker system folder components to allow the spell checker to ignore those keywords so i foolishly thought i had a head start well it wasn t horribly atrocious just painfully painful attempt after attempt to not generate errors to celebrate changed errors for later variables than prior errors to pick my way through the keywords to look for their pagemaker v5 equivalents and figure out slowly slowly what the format for the prior command was i got to the point where i could specify all the parameters to reverse print one copy of all pages with aldus prep included and a lot of other variables i didn t need but discovered the function of but for some reason the command which set the reverse print and some other unnecessary attributes would cause the print command to not actually send the print job well it will if you manually print with those settings first which sort of defeats the point of setting the settings via a script command in the first place aldus aaaanyway issue 7 printed this morning via my script and the pdf processed correctly i ve now set up a dedicated print queue to send mdn issues to the right folder and the only thing i m trying to finalise is removing the prepending by cups of jobnumber to the pdf filename as it turns out some physical postscript printers are having similar errors keeping aldus prep resident so my script should actually be able to be used by dillera when sending to all postscript printers on globaltalk whether real or virtual to ensure proper processing huzzah so that s something i ve spent several days on alternative paths which i think i could have gotten working were to either have pagemaker users select a ppd postscript printer description file i created which injects aldus prep at the start of the print job postscript data or create a cups filter which did the same injection but only for certain queues all three solutions have pros and cons but the script one has the benefit that it should work for other printers that exhibit the aldus prep problem and even those that don t and the script text being able to be placed off the page in a pagemaker file selected then run on the file from a menu command is also useful i did try calling the pagemaker v4 2 script commands via applescript which is supposed to be possible but while the commands completed they generated lots of useless error dialogs which had to be dismissed manually scripting was clearly not aldus strong suit speaking of scripting i am also revisiting classic macos scripting via frontier applescript and keyquencer all of which i used back in the day for my air node i set up for use with the apple internet router administrator s guide addendum i want some way to know if that node is visible on globaltalk or not and if not to restart the qemu instance it runs in that means i need to check air s status from outside the guest os that node runs on oracle cloud infrastructure s free tier and i can t bridge the virtual network interface controller vnic the way i can on my wozfest hq air node which runs on ubuntu with a physical nic if it were able to be bridged i d be able to install netatalk in the ubuntu host os just as i do for wozfest hq and have its nbplkup tool see the air node s zone so i d be able to have a shell script run nbplkup periodically to check the airaga zone was still visible and just kill if necessary and start the qemu air instance whenever it s absent being contained within the same machine and not rely on any additional protocols would be ideal so what this means is i have to use what qemu calls user networking which is like a mini built in network address translation nat router in qemu which forwards provides a network for the guest os and i have to specify which protocols are forwarded to the guest os however such forwarding doesn t let nbplkup on the host os see the air node i tried running machttp an early http server for classic mac os with a view to periodically running say curl in the host os to check the home page of the server was available after adding forwarding for port 80 to the qemu start command but it seemed a bit crashy at the moment i m leaning towards a frontier or applescript script to run a netevents based http server download from macintosh garden which can be polled periodically and if the polling is unsuccessful restart the router i see the possibility of false positives with this air is still running but netevents or the script using it isn t but it s the best i ve come up with so far i know some people are investigating how to get jrouter and netatalk running at the same time which might solve my problem i can t rely on just jrouter because i want to offer an appletalk file share via netatalk as i use that as an example for new admins when they re first firing up their air node which is why i want maximum availability and quick restart on unavailability multiple oci instances one for air jrouter one for netatalk in the same oci tenancy talking to each other is beyond the scope of my capabilities right now feel free to pipe up with help on that solution speaking of jrouter it has seen several releases so far this march which is great to see including v0 0 15 today although i still see the appeal of using air as an authentic retro experience i can see myself migrating to jrouter for at least one of my nodes if the netatalk conflict can be resolved drjosh9000 has been doing amazing work with this air replacement making appletalk routers much easier to setup and maintain than air speaking of updates i have been preparing v1 0 5 of my globaltalk setup files a few revised installers and inclusion of the oci command file which somehow got omitted from v1 0 4 and making amendments to my air admin s guide addendum look for the release announcement of these on mastodon and in marchintosh daily news in the coming days other notable updates this month include talkcrawler is now up to v1 3 1 it s kalleboo s globaltalk scanning and reporting hypercard stack which allows you to track which shares you ve left greets in and printers you ve printed greets to as well as providing valuable uptime info and tracking of new and quiescent zones and hosts for your next departmental meeting presentation globaltalk updater is scj s client which pulls hostnames and ip addresses from the coordinating sheet for import into air using kalleboo s airconfig now supports creating a node list file for jrouter mac84 one of the marchintosh admins has updated their ultimate globaltalk networking guide to v1 1 with additional info for new admins 1bit has upgraded their guide to running air in qemu on windows 11 and not an update but a significant new release polpo has reverse engineered the localtalk option card for imagewriter ii printers and released it as the imagescribbler this has allowed several imagewriter iis to appear on globaltalk directly and are available for purchase from joe s computer museum check it out it is a thing of beauty i m sure i ve missed plenty but i didn t want to delay getting this first march update out hopefully i ll be able to do another one in the coming week with further observations work on my own projects and general chit chat in the meantime print to brother from another router there s a bit of competition in naming brother printers this year it seems drop a file in my dropbox and feel free to grab the pdf editions of marchintosh marchintosh wozfest 3 comments on marchintosh 2025 half time report review apple internet router administrator s guide addendum and globaltalk setup files v1 0 4 released for marchintosh 2025 a massive haul of apple internet router and globaltalk related resources has just dropped marchintosh 2025 is nearly here and boy do i have a bonanza of globaltalk related resources for my marchintosh buddies firstly i successfully raised the funds last year to buy an original apple internet router v3 0 1 boxed package including the apple internet router administrator s guide my intention was to scan the print material flux the disks make it all available online then donate the physical package to the australian computer museum society i m so proud to announce i have completed digitisation of the manual a massive task to capture the true spot colour glory of its original 1990s production i had to tidy the scanned images and recreate some graphics apply the spot colour standardise page sizes rotate slightly askew pages combine the tiffs into pdfs and ocr the result i m releasing 300 and 600dpi two colour ocred versions of the manual as well as a 300dpi 4 level monochrome black white and two shades grey ocred version additionally i have to say i am simply super chuffed to also announce the release of my 40 years in the making addendum to the apple internet router administrator s guide covering the globaltalk network its history technical considerations and how to set up a basic router node on it real or emulated but that s not all i have also updated my set of globaltalk setup files to v1 0 4 and this version has updated pre installed and installer disk images as well as qemu command files for running on macos windows and linux including on oracle cloud infrastructure oh and one more thing v1 0 4 of the globaltalk setup files sees the first release of a configuration package for the utm application on macos utm is a qemu gui wrapper which makes emulating many of qemu s target systems much easier all of these resources are available in the europlus globaltalk files folder on my unofficial globaltalk wiki as per the addendum s introduction this addendum and globaltalk wouldn t have been possible without some key players i can t hope to name them all but those i especially wish to say thanks to include paulrickards and billgoats the original globaltalkers and their partner in crime vga256 who coined the name my fellow retro enthusiasts who helped me to buy an original apple internet router package making this addendum possible ctb31 jongleur likesoldmacs billgoats retroswim drjosh9000 those who proofread this addendum and offered invaluable guidance likesoldmacs danieltufvesson rajiv arroz dldnh rtod kalleboo the globaltalk participants who prepared information resources and useful and or fun applications especially those i list in this addendum who left messages in drop boxes sent print jobs and celebrated globaltalk whenever they could the marchintosh admins and lastly but certainly most importantly a heartfelt thanks goes out to all those appletalk internet administrators who took the effort to create globaltalk nodes making it truly a net to remember the addendum has been a massive labour of love and i m just so proud of how it s come out after i complete scanning the remaining print material and fluxing the disks the physical apple internet router package will be donated to the australian computer museum society with the addendum added in and a special insert in the style of the manual detailing the package s donors all the resulting material will also be placed on the internet archive and i ll make another announcement when that happens and with that all that s left to say is happy marchintosh everyone globaltalk setup files v1 0 4 released for marchintosh 2025 marchintosh 2025 approaches well time certainly flies whether you re having fun or not and here we are in february 2025 only a week or so from marchintosh 2025 while now coordinated by the marchintosh organisers globaltalk which launched at the end of february 2024 has continued on with a life of its own with several tens of nodes
