and that was not one of the monuments we were planning on stopping by for some reason i would say i agree with admiral nimitz that we do owe are men and women in the military an obligation to not just honor them but to strife to make this country the best it can be since they are sacrificing their lives to protect all of use at home one of these days though i will find a way to go visit the memorial site properly and pay my respects to the men who sacrificed everything for this great nation posted in history class oct 09 painting during the renaissance posted by bmt1021 2 michael baxandall s book painting experience in fifteen century italy was first published in 1972 with a second edition being published in 1988 the book is divided into three sections the first segment concentrates on the economic aspect of how painters were commissioned and how it changed over time the second section of the book focuses on art appreciation leaving the third to highlight how art was discussed and categorized baxandall begins the book with his first chapter titled conditions of trade page 1 where he makes the argument that the relationship between painter and commissioner should be looked at as a commercial relationship rather than a patronal bond he then writes about the motives behind entering into contracts with artists the main motives are personally owning what is good serve the glory of god the honor of the city and commemoration of myself a charitable donation element of enjoyment in looking at good paintings page 2 he then generalizes into three different parts what most contracts stated during this time first what was supposed to be painted how the painter would be paid a completion date and lastly what type of paints or colors were to be used the most commonly requested at the time being ultramarine and gold in most cases the painters were paid in increments these increments were based upon an agreed amount though in some cases the painter was paid for their labor and also for the materials used page 6 8 during the early renaissance colors like gold and ultramarine were popular and highly sought after in works of art as the renaissance progressed though skill became more important page 14 baxandall illustrates this through his comments on the shift from colors to the skill of mixing paint contracts were detailed even specifying the level of labor that would be expected of the master painter page 17 23 he finalizes the chapter by discussing a letter sent to the duke of milan by one of his agents on the description of four artists that the agent believes would be acceptable for one of his projects the second chapter of his book which is entitled the period eye page 29 focuses on how people view paintings the first part of the chapter discusses how people need a cultural skill and a willingness to properly view the meaning of a painting he makes the argument that people see images in the same manner but their interpretation can vary page 32 33 he puts forth the idea that artists paint what they know from past experiences and that people look at paintings through what they already know page 34 36 baxandall states it is the highest common factor of skill and his public that the painter consistently catered for page 40 in the next part of the chapter he conveys how paintings help spiritual and intellectual activities reach specific end results he concentrates on how the church used paintings to help the common people remember spiritual stories the church wanted paintings that were eye catching to tell a story and inspire devotional thoughts for the common man they believed that pictures would help simple or in this case illiterate people remember the saints and stories of the bible page 40 43 artists were more exterior visualizers while the public was more interior in their visualization because this was the case numerous artists painted generic people into their scenery so that the viewer could easily put himself into the painting page 45 47 baxandall also discusses how preachers taught through their sermons how their congregation was supposed to interpret these paintings page 55 he deliberates how the artist s leaves room for imagination in the scenery and surrounding images but when it comes to key figures he will create some type of mark that will make them easily identifiable he then concentrates on how hand gestures that originally came from priest and monks were used in paintings page 60 64 he states knowing the gesture helps us to read it more crisply because the gesture lends itself to different expressive inflections page 68 gauging is important in how it differs from region to region page 86 since math was held in high esteem it was reflected in their art page 101 baxandall finalizes the chapter by stating that since a large population of renaissance people were skilled in math it made it easier for them to view paintings in terms of geometry page107 the first part of chapter three is a synopsis of chapter one and two baxandall goes on to discuss famous painters in europe he notes that thirteen out of twenty five are from florence from this point he defines a list of sixteen words that best describes renaissance artwork from art critics of this time period one of baxandall s final ideas is such insights are necessary if the historical imagination is to be fed page 152 153 he ends the book with a quote from abraham and isaac the book takes a very interesting view of renaissance artists clients materials used and society of the time baxandall shows an abundance of evidence to support his major points he not only uses documents and letters to support his main points but he also includes pictures of the paintings in which he is describing as a visual representation of his arguments these pictures are very important to a reader that might not be familiar with art history baxandall s last quote illustrates the importance of art in society anyone who is interested in the renaissance and art history of this period should strongly consider reading baxandall s book posted in other history oct 07 pearl harber surprise attack or government conspericy you decide posted by bmt1021 3 on december 7 1941 the united states was unjustly attacked by japan official government policy states that this attack was a surprise there are some individuals that believe that the government knew they site america s growing intelligence agencies because they had been able to decipher all but one of the japanese codes unfortunately due to security risk most of what had been deciphered had not been reported by 1995 there has been ten inquires made by government officials concerning the attack on pearl harbor some people have suggested that it was roosevelt s plan to lure japan into attacking the united states they draw this conclusion from the fact that roosevelt would not listen to warnings about stationing the pacific fleet in hawaii several officers who were later dismissed from the military tried to warn roosevelt that the pacific fleet would be vulnerable if attacked at pearl harbor they also site roosevelt s desire to help great britain and enter the war in europe we may never truly know what was known or unknown to the president because of destroyed files and classified files not being declassified since there is no solid fact that the the 10th grade and my history teach first walked into the room the she said was history is not all about facts and figures sure they are important but it is a story of how we as a people came to be how we are today up until this point i had like history but i only like to do my own research and did not like the classes i had to take i also remember her making use do these horrible homework assignments called sqids which where circle diagrams that took hours to do and you had to have a fairly good grasp on what you were doing them one i even made a deal with her that if i made an a on a test she would let me out of making them from that moment on i committed all of my available time to studying what she asked us to after that year i thought that s the kind of teacher i want to be one that pushes he s students to excel in their studies but at the same time i want it to be fun for them in that respect i already know how i will teach i will use a mixture of multimedia power points lender classifies the motivations for revolutionary war soldiers into two categories before 1777 and after 1777 during the early stages of the war soldiers according to lender were driven by patriotism liberty and equality lender used letters journals and diaries of northeastern soldiers from new jersey and new york to show evidence for his claim the journals showed patriotism that they the stamp act was enacted so he has a very limited firsthand view of the events leading up to the revolutionary war after 1777 lender makes the argument that men only enlisted for land and money with no patriotism lender states that men that enlisted were young and poor and their only way to advance socially and economically was by enlisting the soldiers did not actually dislike the british they had stronger hatred for the indians and tory elements knouff disagrees with lender s assessment of what motivated the soldiers at the time of the revolutionary war knouff makes the argument that the soldiers were driven by patriotism and not monetary gain he focused mainly on pennsylvania soldiers the reasoning behind his conclusion was that individuals were still enlisting even after 1777 in light of no guarantee of pay land or social mobility also if they were strictly fighting for monetary gain they would not be enlisting for themselves but they would be enlisting as substitutes which were paid more another event that knouff uses to support his claim is that when british forces occupied pennsylvania pennsylvanians deserted the army to protect their homes it is easy for historians to view the same event or issues and come up with different conclusions even though they used the same general area the citizens of new jersey new york and pennsylvania were rivals with each other and there was no national consensus for what it meant to be an american during this time period lender used officers and men in command with few average soldiers while knouff used mainly every day soldiers and very few officers this might not seem like a big distinction but the men in command normally came from well known wealthy families while the non commanders were younger and not as established another way that shows different conclusions is that lender and knouff viewed patriotism in diverse ways lender focused on national patriotism while knouff concentrated on local all these history views it as nonproductive use of time he references to multiple sci fi books titled doomsday book by connie willis and timelines by michael crichton to make his point on top of explaining how hard it is to actually see what is happening on the large scale will you are in the moment i have a counter point though because in my opinion if we had the ability to send people back in time and to any location we would also have to ability to send a machine back and in to space so we could put multiple satellites up to record what is going on than retrieve them and piece together the data to create a living history now since i have said all that i do agree with him that actually writing history out is better since you can change the scale and have the ability of simultaneity it gives the reader the ability to make comparisons to other points in time that are similar and allows them to see multiple view points as well so to answer the question on if time traveling would make better historians my answer would be yes and no yes in that it would give better details on specific events in history and will giving people the ability to connect with the people in those time period then
