ly back then the death is accidental but they pursue both the theft and the murder with equal fervour what i like is how the police are so hardworking so honest yes i know and quite intelligent depending on social class of course and there are so many of them no shortage of staff so to speak i am trying not to read all of them in one go even lancashire can get too much but it feels like such a treasure trove leave a comment posted in authors books crime history reading tagged agatha christie carol carnac e c r lorac edith caroline rivett frank the monster posted on april 9 2026 by bookwitch 1 comment in case you are going round worrying about turning into a monster this is the book for you or even if you re not minded that way yet mats strandberg who is big in sweden has a new young horror book series coming frank the monster is the first of three this year basically young frank is friendless and scared and then he turns into a monster so yes there are such things as monsters possibly even under your bed unless you re it i believe this first instalment is the introduction to how easy it is to become a monster scaring everyone around you the next books will probably be more specific having heard mats speak in gothenburg ten years ago i didn t find him scary at all but one can always readjust such thoughts he d better not end up under my bed though frank that is not mats although a mats under my bed wouldn t be great either joking apart this kind of story will hopefully be good for anyone who does worry about the under bed situation in their home ballachulish posted on april 4 2026 by bookwitch leave a comment by sheer coincidence a few days earlier son also had a shark encounter his was a stone shark in småland just before daughter and i set off for a long weekend in the highlands i asked the resident it consultant if he by any chance remembered where he and i had had elevenses in october 2018 he never remembers anything but oh yes it was in balquhidder just by the balquhidder ex railway station when he mentioned the station it all came back to me not the sharks but the rest always fond of tradition daughter and i also had elevenses there and we met the famous sharks in their toilet the café s toilet not the sharks although now i think of it they treated it as their own luckily it was a quiet morning or the inconvenience caused by people photographing or videoing the sharks would have added to any queue came past a sign for a haggis experience but didn t try it stopping in tyndrum to feed the car we also fed ourselves a little only since we d already had shark scones there were birds serendipitously we ended up on the table with a direct view of the bird feeders and loved the view when all three of us were full we drove on so did the red light jumper we witnessed somewhere on the edge of rannoch moor i didn t know that s what they are called anyway they will supposedly be prosecuted standing first in line by the red light for the contraflow we were a little taken aback when car number three broke ranks and started driving i mean you can t expect people to just wait can you when eventually the cars driving in the opposite direction met our jumper there was a stalemate as he tried to shrink into the rock to the side nobody moved in the end one of the workers told him to reverse and we watched as he reversed very slowly followed by the whole long queue of drivers heading south we then drove behind him as he finally was able to go in his chosen direction watching as he turned off at the first opportunity i d like to think he and his wife used the visitor centre to discuss their imminent divorce i did not tell barry hutchison about our visit last time i did and he hurriedly had to arrange to go to florida or somewhere and i wanted to spare him this but i can really sympathise with his tyler neish who wants to throw up all over any car he travels in those are curvy roads and not even a sliver of hard shoulder for your convenience speaking of conveniences i found mine the one i remember sheltering in back in june 1980 it was a really wet day and the whole walking group needed to hide from the rain so there we stood herring style in the little concrete toilets in the car park waiting for our coach to turn up i d been afraid it would be gone but as we turned into the narrow streets of glencoe village which were being dug up and had a contraflow it was right there in the car park we were unable to reach it was all lovely we met a very lovely greek glaswegian couple who chatted to us for much longer than either daughter or i had any right to expect but then i can talk about danish princesses they wanted to find ballachulish i mean it was right there we described the road signs and what it looked like but after three tries they decided to save it for next time in downtown ballachulish you can even feed your ev which is more than you can say for many towns while you also eat something nice visitor centre again good places and we could and did eat where we stayed there were some issues such as the packed lunch sandwich our g g friend had asked for not having any filling between the pieces of bread it s lucky none of us were at the top of ben nevis when this came to light besides cauliflower cheese made with most likely custard powder is still food leave a comment librarian died early this morning she was 94 she d not been well for some time and had had to leave her book filled flat for a nursing home and i believe that my more recent letters had to be read to her but that s all right especially since her very devoted niece was there to keep her company the older i got the more i understood how she came to have less active interest in the children s books she used to love and advocate for as well as the crime novels she always enjoyed crosswords are not a bad thing to spend time on when books feel like too much i would never have turned into a bookwitch without her that s her in the photo on café duty at her niece s paradise in the countryside north of stockholm 1 comment posted in authors blogs books crime reading to halmshtad and beyond posted on march 12 2026 by bookwitch leave a comment daughter downloaded some christoffer carlsson to listen to at the gym she had been sold on the idea of plenty of corpses in the vicinity of her holiday paradise and i got to explain again about elsa grave on the train and the postman feeding her cat one can never speak of these things too many times but as we listened to a brief sample at home well before the treadmill i was aghast and so was she at the mangling of names and place names i found myself revisiting the yshtad of the bbc and branagh s wallander that was a long time ago the reason i was a little taken aback was that a week or so earlier i had been asked to record some words well more like names of people and places they were for a publisher to pass on to their audio book reading actors to get them right they are apparently quite adept at copying what they hear i can only assume that christoffer s reader had not heard much so it s not halmshtad it s a simple s followed by a t if local enough you can drop the l and the d if you like and you might even know how to say gurkburk like a native but gherkin jars do not appear in these books i know it s not nice to complain but i did come up with a good idea at least i thought so get an actor who is a native speaker to read the audio book the little bit of foreign accent in the english will just add to the charm and halmstad will be left in peace leave a comment posted in audio books authors books crime languages translation tagged christoffer carlsson elsa grave the perfumed book posted on march 5 2026 by bookwitch leave a comment the resident it consultant bought a book online well he does this quite a bit but this recent occasion made itself more noticeable the book smells you see these things for sale online where the seller points out the item is from a smoke even pet free home this is good especially if you have issues this book however is smelling nice except not to us because it s perfume and someone else s choice of scent we ve tried the bicarbonate of soda route still as perfumey it not being my book i gave up at this point and the resident it consultant is going to wait it out but this kind of thing just about means it s not worth trying to save money or not using that online bookshop i thought that was it i m now a few chapters in with that book from the library i mentioned earlier that too smells a bit although not as much can t decide if it s only the plastic library cover i thought of temporarily removing it the pages also have a whiff about them possibly from the cover possibly the whole book has picked up the last borrower s home scent it s not bad again it s just not ours this is obviously something that will keep happening as you take possession of someone else s stuff but i had never considered it in connection with charity book purchases maybe they air enough before the book becomes yours if you see someone sniffing the goods in oxfam it will be me leave a comment posted in books bookshops the story of shona fergusovna posted on february 26 2026 by bookwitch leave a comment i really expected him to like it when i discovered that olga wojtas had written a crime novel spanning edinburgh and old russia i felt miss blaine s prefect and the golden samovar would be the perfect christmas present for the resident it consultant when i inquired afterwards he made that polite little noise that told me he was trying not to be rude luckily i enjoyed it very much how can you not when you have a humorous crime novel of the anti miss jean brodie persuasion featuring a capable woman in today s edinburgh someone who wears doc martens who just happens to time travel to some time in the reign of the tsar she never quite managed to work out what year it was and her name is ferguson of course but when in russia you can even transform yourself into a princess and you end up with a driver a footman and a major domo all of them the same man but old vatrushkin is an excellent serf and one i wouldn t mind acquiring myself so shona has a task to do but what is it she only has a week but quickly comes to the conclusion she is to marry the young heiress lidia off to the most handsome of young men can t be hard with or without the boots i have none of shona s energy and would have collapsed on day one not her though and we meet the cream of the cream with and without their major domos i have been saying recently how i might prefer less worthy fiction this is one such book i like that it is fun perhaps a little bit unrealistic but fun shona is also not just a woman with boots but she s over fifty i want to read more about her and i was relieved to discover there are more adventures presumably without old vatrushkin but you can t have everything leave a comment posted in authors blogs books christmas crime history humour languages reading review tagged olga wojtas reads on the table posted on february 20 2026 by bookwitch leave a comment things came to a head last week i watched the resident it consultant sitting there with his breakfast reading the news maybe on his mobile which was lying next to the porridge i was only marginally better off i had half of a very bad interiors magazine to plough through but after that i was also out of table reading materials so i whatsapped son asking if he had anything at all that we could read mentioned the sad look of dad with porridge and phone he said he d investigate the next day the postman drove up with enormous package filled with table reads phew private eye and financial times for the resident it consultant the bookseller and the author for me plus catalogues of this year s new books so now we re equipped with non screen reads we usually do well as son is good at posting his cast offs to the old people but there had been christmas and various other interruptions so where was i going with this yes i read last year s sales figures for the top 50 and other categories incidentally much more interesting than that interiors thing was pleased to see the names of some people i have met or actually know and before the dearth of table reads i d read about a group of swedish women authors in jämtland that s a large county in the north of sweden with much space and few people and mountains and snow or so i understand never having been that far north myself one of the nine lisa ridzén was doing exceptionally well with sales even in the uk 160 000 books sold is a good figure but for jämtland well anyway as soon as i had my copy of the bookseller i discovered lisa in there placed decently high on the list with her when the cranes fly south translation by alice menzies my copy has been reserved at the library where there is a queue i hope i will like it it s quite nice when both names involved have the letter z in them the other eight women sounded interesting as well i don t know if this means i ll be reading more actual grown up fiction and swedish fiction at that i am still afraid it will be depressing i follow a reading group on social media and swedes really do seem to read a lot and not just at the kitchen table either but this fascinating group have proved one thing and it s that they prefer their fiction dark and not too humorous whereas i like a good laugh we shall see won t we once that library queue has been
