empty nester empty nester tuesday october 20 2015 the mind is the first to go knitting away when i realized that the needle i was using was a dpn resulting in over half of the row sliding off the other end luckily i saved the stitches and they are back where they belong and yes this is your homework figure out what a dpn is posted by empty nester at 8 35 pm 1 comment thursday september 3 2015 has it really been this long i guess it has for lots of reasons some good grandsons and some bad so expect more regular posts as facebook just doesn t do it for me anymore posted by empty nester at 8 56 pm 1 comment friday january 3 2014 the five things i heard that were beyond rude in ireland sorry to say that they came from my fellow knitters this was a group of twenty five 20 of us were knitters the rest were either husbands or friends while we were knitting they d be off on their own exploring the delights in the town most of them toured the guiness factory in dublin and that brings me to the subject matter of today s post all of the people on this group were educated middle to upper class and ages ranged from 30s to 75 1 in our very first knitting class someone asked the instructor about circular needles she explained that circulars were not used in irish knits or by irish knitters come to think of it i did not see any for sale at the major craft show we went to on november 2nd anyway at that point several knitters said you know you really should try it you will like it so much better than straight needles i cvan t believe you ve never used them come on people leave it alone 2 the hotels often served full irish breakfasts or continental breakfasts to us i enjoyed it at every opportunity with the exception of the black white pudding which i asked them to hold back however even if you asked for the egg to be over easy it always looked like the egg below finally they gave up and asked for scrambled eggs then complained that they were either too soggy or too dry sorry that the porridge wasn t featured in this picture the crossaints came from the continental offerrings and can i just say that irish bacon is to die for these breakfasts were the reason i gained 5 pounds in ten days 3 is the fish fresh peopel did you know that ireland is an island surrounded by the ocean and has numerous rivers and streams really by the way this was rainbow trout served over mashed potatoes and it was delish 4 at every meal regardless of what you ordered mashed potatoes were part of the meal the only exception is if you ordered pasta and yes some people actually ate pasta on this trip one of my new friends actually started complaining while at the restaurant that if these people don t figure out how to make baked potatoes i am going to scream 5 at an irish lace museum where people still learn to make irish lace the curator was talking about the use of the smallest hook available to make this beautiful lace as an oought zero immediately boston corrected her that double oughts were the smallest and thus ensued a debate among three needle workers as to who was right embarrassing it was nice not to be the ugly america in fact i was known as the quet one more this weekend posted by empty nester at 3 04 pm no comments wednesday january 1 2014 top five differences between us and ireland the obvious one they drive on the wrong side of the road thankfully in dublin they remind us of that fact by posting helpful guides on the street itself as well as on signs and it was scary crossing the road the first few days pillows can i just say that regardless of where i slept the pillows were flat not cushy and definitely not foldable no picture but take my word for it it was like sleeping on a folded beach towel but without a beach friendliness of the natives on my first day in dublin having arrived at 8 am i took a nice walk from the hotel the shuttle driver had just told me to go out the door and turn right i d find myself on the busy street of shops viewed from the shuttle well i followed his directions and never found that street i did find two beautiful parks but no shops for 45 minutes even the gps on my phone didn t help me locate the streets i wanted so i asked for directions back to the hotel a friendly doorman told me i was only six minutes away 35 minutes later i had yet to find the hotel so i asked a woman walking her dog and two boys she had me turn around walk towards a red brick building and follow it into the courtyard for my hotel people in ireland look at you when you ware walking no one other than tourists walk around peering at their iphones texting etc here is a picture of st michael s green one of the parks i discovered that day note how green everything is in november bathrooms nicer than i would have expected however the placement and actual toilet paper holder varies from hotel to hotel from a standard roll holder to one that is simply a metal circle that is like putting the roll on the floor to a holder that sits straight up all bathtubs are deep soaker tubs i was fortunate on my last night as a 59 year old to find a beautiful jacuzzi tub in my bathroom he only disconcerting items in the bathrooms were the hair dryers and this tea pots in the rooms so much better than the coffee pots in hotels back here in the states they have real china cups to sip from and yes i became quite the tea drinker while in ireland i will be trying to blog every few days to get everyone caught up with my ireland trip i can not believe it s been almost two months a trip of my lifetime and worth every penny posted by empty nester at 1 26 pm no comments wednesday october 30 2013 the last of the rules i just realize i am leaving tomorrow and need to finish my list so will do that here tonight so that when i get back from my lovely vacation the next blog entry will be all about ireland 19 less reality tv not saying i am going to give up judge judy but am going to get watching reality tv quite so much 18 catch up on some of my favorite shows haven t watched ncis in two years 17 start using netflix more and more 16 walk to work at least once a week even this winter it s a good way to wind up and wind down 15 do a mudder or a trail run or a color run just to be different 14 quit shopping at goodwill for clothes i deserve better 13 find an avenue for more socialization with adults outside the gym 12 start learning neighbors names i say hello in passing but i don t know their names 11 mend bridges with those neighbor kids i may save this one to my 69th year 10 keep my sarcastic comments to myself only at work 9 quit letting off steam at work it doesn t change anything it doesn t make me feel any better 8 continue to offer constructive comments at work it s up to others as to whether they accept them it only devalues them it does not devalue me 7 quit stressing over my work load it is what it is 6 continue to look at ways of being more efficient in doing my work and continue to bring my own style to the work i do to make myself feel better 5 once a week take stock at where i am in life and how to reach my goals of retirement by 65 4 learn something new this next year a different hobby if you will that will take me into a group setting right now i am thinking of archery 3 maybe no definitely go to a live iu football and or basketball game every year 2 don t let a bad work day bleed over into my personal work time 1 enjoy baby gevers my first grandchild for each moment after the arrival in february already this baby has been a huge motivator for my life it s one of the reasons for the rules posted by empty nester at 7 57 pm no comments sunday october 13 2013 so if you follow thru on rules 30 29 28 27 26 what happens well i will have more energy and motivation to do the following 25 do some kind of cleaning every night before bedtime it doesn t have to be much it could be sweeping off the front walk the patio just something to restore my home and remind my daughter anna that i do know how to keep a house 24 take some different work out classes at the gym perhaps flow or step on a regular basis again 23 gee have you ever heard of the movies maybe one date night a month dating myself hahahaha 22 batch cooking emily and i keep saying we re going to do this i must and share the bounty with emily and rob especially in february and march 21 give jones and ziggy a little more attention posted by empty nester at 7 56 pm no comments saturday october 12 2013 five more rules oh how i wish this list was done 30 wake up every morning realizing work did not kill me 29 start balancing my work life better with my personal life that might help me achieve most of these rules 28 realizing that 39 is pretty nebulous let s further describe it as no more taking lap top home with me from monday thru thursday that means no work in the evenings on those four days 27 continue to work from home at least once a week to give myself a break from co workers who drive me absolutely around the bend 26 continue to identify to my boss in what areas i think others should be assuming some of the work load i currently hold it may never happen but at least i have identified it to her 25 and make no apologies for when i can t comply with a request right away it s not my fault sorry this entry is so short but i am in the middle of doing some work hahahahahaha posted by empty nester at 9 36 pm 1 comment older posts home subscribe to posts atom followers about me empty nester view my complete profile blog archive
