to many canadians the emphasis on patriotism all that flag waving i love living in the lower hudson valley filled with history probably because there s basically no social safety net here you have to be super self reliant and resourceful there s no counting on the government for much of anything which is very tough on anyone with poor language skills and education poor health no family support of any kind i m in awe of people able to surmount these but i can t stand or fathom people s slavish worship of money status and consumption the staggering income inequality shrugged off by magas sneering work harder move stop whining when so few people can now even afford the basics of life housing food gas health insurance a president who revels in vengeance and greed and grift and corruption shoveling 2 billion into his pockets in his second term alone the chest beaters who insist the u s is the best country in the world most of whom have never left it and easily ignore its many domestic challenges i don t love being called a resident alien canadians call them landed immigrants nor being naturalized if i choose to become a citizen as if somehow not being one is an un natural condition i m in despair about this nation s current politics grift theft corruption division racism with an utterly useless congress senate and supreme court i now look at canadian and french real estate daily i cannot bear the casual cruelty of trump and the gop i find it truly nauseating and wonder how or if the country will ever find its way back to sane r government that at least tries to serve its people not just pander endlessly to white billionaires while pardoning criminals i often wonder how many immigrants like me those who left safe sane countries by choice have now chosen to return to them where family and friends may still await we visit toronto at least once a year and i am always glad and grateful to feel welcomed there i ve found deep friendship here extremely elusive men 1979 i ve seen it dozens of times and we all know how it ends but it never fails to grip me very few films show the relentless dogged work it really takes to do investigative reporting all that door knocking and fat piles of documents and scared sources and intense pressure from your editor to prove there actually is a story there my one critique is how much of a boys club it portrays when without the steel spine of its gutsy female publisher kay graham none of it would have seen print great cast led by dustin hoffman and robert redford and martin balsam and jason robards the quiet bits of music are eerie and perfect spotlight 2015 this won best picture oscar in 2015 like atpm i never tire of rewatching it for many of the same reasons i especially appreciate how it also shows the tremendous emotional toll this work digging into priests abuse of boston children took on the three reporters and their editors all of whom were raised catholic it shows how delicately reporters must behave when trying to interview traumatized survivors it shows the relentless pressure from the powers that be to shut all that reporting work down it shows how much great reporting relies on the
