Text of the page (random words):
bryan and shayla bryan and shayla live laugh love thursday november 24 2011 bryan s thanksgiving post i wish you all a happy thanksgiving and hope you find joy in the blessings you have been given this year i decided to write down some of my thoughts reguarding thanksgiving and hope you find them inlightening i usually don t express myself if writing so this is really a first for me enjoy thanksgiving by bryan patterson during the thanksgiving season we are always bombarded with the question what are you thankful for it seems like most people rattle off a list of things they are thankful for like it s their weekly grocery list or things that they need to accomplish before the weekend however once the turkey stuffing and yams have been devoured the football games are over the pumpkin pie with lots of whip topping has disappeared and after our over indulgence aka pigging out at the dinner table like we were starving children from africa has dissipated we go about our lives without much reflection or implementation of that momentary expression of gratitude like it was just another great meal maybe this isn t the case with everyone but our society has hardwired and programmed us with algorithms that make us forget to be grateful and give thanks after turkey day why is this and what can we do about it maybe it s the brain and body freezing that some experience from waiting in mile long lines at midnight sometimes earlier just to save a few bucks on a christmas present as they turn cold hearted and become rude to everyone around them maybe it s indigestion of the massive amounts of food that were consumed and now the heartache heartburn of acid reflux from their gluttony that makes them irritable and selfish or maybe it s just the pressure to have all of the christmas shopping done presents wrapped the tree decorated the christmas cards mailed the lights up travel plans set parties planned with guests invited the treats baked and even the eggnog purchased before december starts that dismisses this idea of gratitude all year round though i don t blame the individuals for their actions i think our society has a cynical sense of humor which causes this ungrateful paralysis and deadening disease of selfishness to permeate our thoughts and actions can anyone explain to me why the day after thanksgiving is called black friday anyway doesn t that evoke an image that seems contrary to the purpose of gift giving why do the stores start putting out christmas stuff in mass quantities three months before santa comes to town i know that the seasonal sections from summer and back to school are over but do we really need three months of singing christmas trees and giant air filled santas interrupting our regular shopping experience not to mention that radio stations start playing the obnoxious children s christmas music a few weeks before thanksgiving which usually has nothing to do with the real meaning of christmas do advertisers and ceos devilishly enjoy putting people through this terrible torture during a time when people are trying to focus on being grateful for what they have or is this just them being prepared for the biggest shopping season of the year i too have been caught in the crafty advertising schemes of the cunning shop owners and spent precious hours mob shopping instead of sleeping i too have been ensnared by the desire to have the holiday tasks completed the weekend after thanksgiving and i have lost that grateful spirit i too have been enticed by the sweet tinkling tones of the familiar holiday tunes that have brain washed me into humming or maybe even singing at random times those songs all year long instead of focusing on the true meaning of christmas or thanksgiving but the age old battle comes down to one thing do i let it get the best of me or am i better than that even though we may not be able to battle corporate america on this issue and win though i respect those that have spent many hours days and even months protesting against corporate greed we cannot let them control us may i submit that we take a look at our selves and say is this really worth the grief and headache should we indulge them and line their pockets while we have to suffer the consequences i know that our economy is in bad shape and simply not spending would make things worse but overspending is what got us into this mess in the first place while that is a whole other topic for discussion and debate focusing on the money aspect too can take away from the meaning of the holidays the christmas season has a very important reason but let us not brush aside the gratefulness we felt in those brief moments between halloween and christmas let us string together these wonderful moments and events with tread of thanksgiving all year long let us be grateful for and celebrate the true reason for the holiday seasons and not what our society has disguised as a reason to fill their coffers though i probably won t change the world through this diatribe or even anyone but myself i must stand by this cause being grateful is more than just going around the table saying the one thing you are thankful for before you devour the food you spent days preparing but isn t that what we do at thanksgiving isn t that a good thing to do the act of expressing or rendering thanks towards or for something while that is part of being grateful it isn t the only thing required dr vaughn e worthen a licensed psychologist stated gratitude is a positive experience that comes from recognizing gifts or blessings and feeling thankful it is also an attitude a way of perceiving life in which individuals are willing to receive and acknowledge the beneficial actions of others on their behalf it is a habit that can be cultivated causing one to focus on the blessings of life thus it is more than just a one time event but a reoccurring expression of our thankfulness toward others and for the things that we have been given from the book of mormon we learn the truth to live in thanksgiving daily for the many mercies and blessings which god doth bestow upon you as we make this a foundation in our lives we cultivate an attitude of gratitude so why do these things fade so quickly president joseph f smith said pride destroys our gratitude and sets up selfishness in its place i submit that some of our holiday traditions perhaps actually move us away from the true reason for celebration instead of helping us develop our gratitude for the things the lord has blessed us with maybe instead of glutting ourselves we should be giving to those in need those without food shelter and love maybe instead of watching countless hours of football or taking that precious afternoon nap we should spend our time visiting those that are lonely without family or friends maybe instead of freezing out in the cold with irritable people in the wee hours of the morning just to come home and sleep all day we should be finding ways to serve our neighbors our society will only continue to get worse if we continue to stoke its need for greed instead of creating an attitude of gratitude we must dispel pride and selfishness from our lives we want to win the battle and overcome evil president thomas s monson said to express gratitude is gracious and honorable to enact gratitude is generous and noble but to live with gratitude ever in our hearts is to touch heaven may each of us re evaluate our attitudes and maybe consider changing which traditions we continue to cleave unto perhaps this is the year that we begin to change the world by changing the one thing that we can ourselves i hope we can all develop an attitude of being grateful and truly live with gratitude ever in our hearts that we might touch heaven i know that this year i will consider more carefully what i will do with my time and how i will show my thankful heart to those that i care most about may you do the same is my humble prayer amen posted by bp at thursday november 24 2011 2 comments thursday august 25 2011 sadie s trip to idaho a few months ago we took a trip to idaho for shayla s family reunion and we
