a city it s a very human place to build a city but it s also like if you decided to pull a the netherlands in the worst place humanly possible it s build on the main arm of one of the largest rivers on earth and that river hates its current route to the sea there s a much shorter and steeper path down the atachfalaya river that it has already attached itself to and right at this moment the only thing stopping the entire mississippi from packing up her bags and moving there is a rather old and complex system of dams built mostly in the middle 1900 s by the us army core of engineers these dams are not really flood resistant enough for a river as big as the mississippi and have nearly collapsed once already during a major flood in 1973 they ve since added some more defensive measures but even then it is incredibly hard to keep a river this big in a course it doesn t want to be in anymore for long and it only has to go wrong once there s no way to get the mississippi to move back to its original course once its picked a new one even now it s slowly moving into the atachfalaya river a little more every year besides that the dikes within new orleans itself are also barely sufficient in many places and both the ocean and the river lay higher than it it s basically a giant bowl with water on all sides and that makes sense because where new orleans is now used to be a swamp it s a polder and like all polders it is slowly subsiding as the water escapes the soil below it meaning the dikes that keep it dry will have to be continuously upped for the next few centuries just to stress i am not kidding about the bowl thing on top of that the sea level around it is rising due to climate change and on top of that top the soil below the city is experiencing saltwater intrusion which will over time make it unsuitable for most plant growth the river water is also becoming saltier due to rising sea levels meaning there s kind of a freshwater catch 22 developing the wetland coastline in front of the city is rapidly weathering away due to damage done to it in the process of oil exploration and this is all before we remember the new orleans sits right on top of one of the most hurricane prone areas on earth none of these are easy to solve issues it s been seriously suggested by very serious academics that moving the entire city and it s not remotely a small city might be cheaper than keeping it around in the long term so yeah the stated opinion of most of the surface geoscientists i ve spoken to about new orleans is small note people in government are aware
