as the eyes and ears on traditional territories a note from the cartographer chris brackley ocean freshwater and us the title of this map is perfectly descriptive of its content it is a map that highlights the foundational connections between ourselves and the water that surrounds and sustains us the massive freshwater flow arrows highlight the reality that while few canadians live close to the ocean we are all connected to it via our local and ever flowing lakes rivers and wetlands and this connection is more than conceptual what we put into our freshwater systems invariably flows to the ocean affecting the delicate marine ecosystems sometimes thousands of kilometres from our homes of course human impact on the ocean is often more direct and this map also highlights our efforts to protect the ocean through a growing network of protected areas there are no one size fits all solutions to protecting ocean environments and the different protected areas on this map reflect that reality some remove certain fishing pressures some limit ship traffic and anchoring some limit or prohibit resource development and some do all of the above learn more about chris our partners in conservation ocean freshwater and us is the result of an ongoing national collaboration led by the canadian ocean literacy coalition between the royal canadian geographical society and numerous partners click the logos below to visit their websites and learn more about their work learn more related stories canadian geographic marine protected areas in canada may not be as protected as we think protecting 30 by 30 that s the goal canada aims to safeguard 30 per cent of its oceans by 2030 to reverse biodiversity loss protect ecosystems and ensure resilience against warming and acidification but how can we conserve something as dynamic deep multi dimensional and diverse as the ocean canadian geographic we did this is there a way out of our intertwined climate and biodiversity crises on sunday june 27 2021 chris harley a lanky professor of marine ecology at the university of british columbia descended a steep concrete stairway in vancouver s tony point grey neighbourhood to a secluded rock strewn shoreline navigable only at low tide canadian geographic making waves seven highlights from the impac5 conference in early february on the western shore of the canadian geographic punctuation s mark can we save the critically endangered north atlantic right whale the whale was so big that it took until the middle of the night and nine hours of maneuvering before the industrial excavator could drag her body from the ocean shallows onto the flat beach of grand étang n s a rope tied to her tail canadian geographic photos the parks beneath the sea beneath the waves of canada s three oceans and inland bodies of water lies a world of spectacular biodiversity that few people ever get to see but which is just as vital to the health of the planet as terrestrial ecosystems canadian ocean literacy coalition the heart of our biosphere exploring our civic relationship with the ocean in canada take a moment take two breaths as you inhale thank the
