and class lectures it took me time to realize that the predominantly white students assumed that all of their clients were white christian and heterosexual unless other characteristics were explicitly noted on the case scenarios there was one exception in the case of clients with criminal justice issues they were often seen as black or latino this meant developing greater clarity and accountability for the client role players and quizzing students after the teams developed more details about their clients can you tell me more about your client s background ancestry socio economic status religion sexual orientation etc do you think you would need to change your approach if your client were black latino native american muslim jewish gay etc photo community despite the relative homogeneity of the class composition students rose to the challenge of portraying people who were from backgrounds different than their own in ways that were respectful authentic empathetic and challenging for the interviewers so they could develop appropriate knowledge and skills perhaps the most important outcome was the self awareness students gained about who they were and about their own skills and areas they identified as something they wanted to address in the future luske s study the becoming a person simulation and teaching interviewing all helped me realize how easy it is for all of us to assume that the people we encounter will be just like us that structural inequality is normal and that there s little we can do to change anything even if we re suffering ourselves the students in the interviewing class taught me how important it is be willing to take time for self reflection time to uncover our strengths and test our limits this is a necessary foundation for being willing to risk leaving our comfort zone to engage with others who are different it s the only way we can really learn about other people and different ways of seeing the world they also demonstrated how important it is to be willing to uncover our own biases and acknowledge things we take for granted luske s students and the feminists who originally developed the becoming a person simulation modeled the importance of thinking critically about the mechanisms and sources of oppression for all people much of what oppresses us is structural but some of it is our internalized acceptance of the taken for granted paradigms that keep oppressive structures in place and like luske s students we need to be willing to build bridges with comrades in other positionalities to work together for our collective find myself in need of help solving a puzzle that may be affecting many bloggers it goes way beyond anything i can do given my woeful ignorance of technology the issue is the surprising increase in views on my blog a different kind of puzzle from an unfinished tapestry an old photo of my own work i received a message from wordpress on october 31 that my stats were booming initially i really didn t pay much attention because there were no new likes or comments that required reciprocity but my stats kept booming here s what i learned for october 31 there were 84 views overall 66 were from the us and ten or fewer views came from other countries but none were from china a large portion of views came in between 11 a m and noon 64 views the posts viewed included a long list of old posts that mostly had a single view and no new likes unlike all the other days there was no referrer listed only a statement we ll show you which websites are referring your site so you can discover where your audience is coming from start sharing it was followed by a link to upgrade to jetpack social i didn t sign up and have no intention to do so the booming continued on november 1 186 views total 134 from the us and another long list of old posts with a single view this time though like all of the days preceding and following october 31 the referrer was listed usually wordpress com november 2 had even more views 244 overall and 143 from the us because of the new blog post on the afternoon of november 1 there were more viewers from other countries uk chile australia canada and india and there was another long list of yet other old posts with a single view i checked in with wordpress today to see if they could provide any insights i must admit that the ai assistant was kind despite my delayed responses and many typos but was unable to identify a single source for the views even though the assistant said it was wise for me to be concerned the best advice the ai assistant she he it was able to provide was to make sure i had a copyright notice on my blog i do and to goggle unique phrases from my work to see if it has been posted elsewhere i haven t done that and i m not sure i will i really don t want to spend my time following through with all of that negative legalistic ugliness while it bothers me that others may benefit from steeling others work i write to raise awareness because i know education matters and i honestly believe it should be accessible to all at no cost i pay for my blog and domain so others have access to information that might be helpful without the flashing advertisements that makes it hard for me to pay attention i am curious to know if others are experiencing the same type of booming stats for single views of hundreds of posts i have heard that many have been dealing with a similar but slightly different form of booming stats maybe if enough of us contact the wp ai assistants they ll be better able to help us solve these has been happening on my blog for the past two days yesterday i got a notice from wp that the traffic on my blog was off the charts i haven t been able to blog recently for a lot of reasons and i do apologize sincerely for not responding to the dear blogging friends who commented on my last post in mid october back issues roofers ripping and hammering as they replaced my aged roof neglected gardens and a mess left behind by an unexpected troubled guest but it all inspired me to return to working on revising the last chapter of my manuscript about ojibwe child welfare as life would have it today one of the old posts i published 11 years ago was on the long list of posts that were read with 3 views it s a topic i have been writing about for the last two days and here it is far better than anything i have written in my revision so far sadly it s still relevant in these times so i decided to share it if any of you knows why i had 150 readers yesterday and more than 100 today i would appreciate hearing from you but i really do appreciate others who have given me a reason to review old posts and edit at least some of my typos just tell me what to do these were dreaded words for me to hear in my roles as a teacher or supervisor it signaled an internalized belief that only an expert in power could dictate the terms of their life their work and their studies the question implied that the speaker had either been successfully colonized or domesticated at least superficially or they were unwilling to take risks to chart their own course an absence of vision and passion that was never been easy for me to follow orders so i am very cautious about giving them whether it was in a classroom or a work situation i have always preferred to explore options through dialogue with the people who were most directly affected by issues and those who had to implement tasks solutions and innovations i have often wondered why so many people unquestioningly follow leaders and are unable or unwilling to simply decide for themselves this inability to recognize one s own ability to transform at least some parts of one s environment perpetuates the status quo we wait for those in power to do what is more effectively done on a local level through face to face engagement why can t we decide how to address homelessness or hunger in our own communities or end racism and discrimination improve schools that don t teach students what they really need to know change hospitals or prisons that don t help heal people or improve social services that don t even provide effective band aids let alone cures too often we willingly accept the pronouncements from above that social problems are not due to structural inequalities they re due to poor decision making bad personal choices deviant people or deficient cultures the generic process of blaming the victim is applied to almost every american problem the miserable health care of the poor is explained away on the grounds that the victim has poor motivation and lacks health information the multi problem poor it is claimed suffer the psychological effects of impoverishment the culture of poverty and the deviant value system of the lower classes consequently though unwittingly they cause their own troubles william ryan pp 5 6 i remember serving on a technical review panel to uncover the causes of alarmingly high infant mortality rates for native americans in wisconsin as the only native american on the review panel the only one without a medical background i read the medical records from a different perspective where others quickly detected patterns of poor health decisions and potentially criminal behavior i saw consequences of the legacy of poverty and colonial oppression the solutions to address deviance and criminality are to increase surveillance and enforce compliance with professional or legal dictates as the boundary spanner on the panel my role was to translate another paradigm my staff and i developed alternatives programs that worked to reweave connections to support families and create services that community members found welcoming and culturally appropriate we needed to convince nonbelievers on the panel that this was really a more effective approach we needed to convince tribal communities that it was possible to be partners in creating new health service paradigms and we needed to find funders instead of relying solely on medical records to find underlying causes we asked tribal staff and community members what has changed as a result of colonialism we listened observed and reflected on what we learned and designed a series of projects to respond if colonialism has disrupted traditional community bonds diets governments spirituality education where do we begin how can we help families so their infants can survive their first year of life our challenge was to walk in two worlds to reweave traditional community informal supports and re envision the role of health providers our goal was not to change individuals but to work in partnership with each community to rebuild networks of support for families we created a network of nurses and paraprofessionals with the dream catcher as the symbol of our work together like the strands of the dream catcher we would work together to screen out the harmful influences in the lives of children and families and only allow the good influences to come through with maternal child health nurses family advocates and community mentors we built a network across nine geographically dispersed was the best approach the federal funders for the project wanted to require all of the infant mortality reduction projects located in poor communities across the country to force participating work with are my people the goal of our project is to help infants survive we don t care how families and infants access the services and supports they need we only care that they do let me tell you a story that explains our approach i proceeded to tell the story of a tribal family advocate on her first day of work she went to a scheduled home visit to check on a newborn when she pulled into the driveway the house was quiet all the curtains were drawn and it looked deserted knowing the community she got out of her car and walked toward the front door suddenly she heard a loud whisper carrie
