keep this in mind as outside the city limits it could present a problem in terms of navigation emergencies and the like the consensus seems to be to opt for local guides and guided tours if you re planning on leaving the city and its immediate surroundings food prices are surprisingly high all restaurants take an automatic 10 service fee and you may be charged an additional 5 for take out transportation is generally good busses and metro are really cheap and taxis can be hit or miss you do get to choose economy standard or luxury and with indrive you even get to bargain the fare before booking your taxi with a family of 6 we had to use indrive as the other apps don t allow for large vehicle bookings but if we couldn t get a decent price for a single vehicle we would opt for 2 regular taxis instead cable cars and other mountain transportation is relatively cheap and is totally worth every tene the views are pristine and dreamy the air fresh and the hikes varied from easy peasy to considerably challenging we met many avid hikers on the peaks and leisurely families with elderly people strolling uphill on wide surfaces with plenty of benches to rest if hiking isn t your thing there are always buses and other means of transportation that will take you to your destination in a jiffy for pennies on the dollar however i do recommend putting in the effort if you re able as the views are quite spectacular and you do want to enjoy them fully we considered staying in a yurt but unless you re someone who likes roughing it out while paying a premium for it i would not recommend it we re talking hundreds of dollars per night for a mattress on the floor and an outhouse sometimes a mere hole in the ground shared among 4 6 yurts yeah that kind of roughing it you really don t have to do all that to enjoy the yurts there are cheaper more comfortable alternatives up in the mountains without having to spend the night as the trip to and fro is totally manageable within the span of half a day from pretty much anywhere in almaty the population seemed very young and rapidly growing the standard of living seems pretty solidly middle class and everyone seems to be living comfortably homelessness and crime despite what i read online before going is not common in fact women alone in pairs or small groups and groups of young and elderly people could be seen carelessly roaming the streets at all times of the day and night undisturbed we did not frequent areas with night clubs and discos at night which is where apparently most of the crime seems to concentrate so that might explain why it seemed very safe restaurants are everywhere and prices range widely but are by no means cheap even buying your own groceries won t save you much as grocery stores are few and their prices not highly competitive there are plenty of corner stores which sell fresh home made and packaged foods fruit vendors prices vary wildly as well case in point i remember buying half my fruit in a corner store and the other half from a lady on a sidewalk in the same general neighborhood and in the same morning same types of fruits in roughly the same quantities and paying double at the store when i offered to pay more to the middle aged woman who sold me the fruit she refused and gave me extra bananas to cover the tip i was scared i had offended her so i gratefully accepted the bananas and went on my way often prices aren t marked although they do seem negotiable even at the hotels and apartments but be mindful and respectful as attitudes seem to vary greatly we only spent two weeks and moved around a lot perhaps if we had gotten to know people a bit more things would have become clearer but these are my impressions based on my experiences for fun we went horse back riding no shortage of options both inside and outside the city we went up nearby mountains on foot and by cable car where we rock climbed dirt biked zip lined tree hiked ate in yurts explored peaks came close up to glaciers and soaked in the beautiful views we visited museums and parks went to malls busy streets and the main bazar we took public buses and metros went on guided tours to the main distant venues lakes canyons rivers and mountain ranges and ate at a wide range of restaurants around the city we stayed in a hotel and an apartment and walked just about everywhere we could i would unambiguous answers to critical questions that reveal the motivations the means and the end goal a lawyer would gather information and bring it to bear before a panel of judges to beckon humanity to its stated morals a musician would write a soundtrack to galvanize people and provide a suitable background to the unfathomable images that the oppressed provide an influencer would use their platform to amplify the voices of the oppressed have discussions with experts or bring to the fore the necessary information for people to realize what is happening and why an activist would gather people together to protest in every way they can to bring attention to the oppression and make it difficult for the status quo to persist a writer would write about what they see hear feel and think all of us together would hope that all our efforts combined would change the situation to one that is fair and just we are writers and this is our effort alongside our support of all other efforts to bring
