thinking of something i like to call the anti homework manifesto for rpgs and this is one of the ideas i want to talk about in it anyway i absolutely agree with you here and especially in many circles writing extensive backstories for characters is basically homework assigned by the gm to their players for questionable benefit buy there s also a sort of an inherent asymmetry there which i think comes from the fact that gms often are expected to shoulder most of the work sometimes when it s not actually mandated writing extensive backstories can just be a fun exercise for the player but it can easily slide right back into homework territory when the player then hands that extensive backstory to the gm and expects them to take it into account in their prep cavegirlpoems i sometimes feel like a crazy person for saying that a ttrpg is about the things you do in the game session and that if something is worth doing in a ttrpg you should do it in play but i have to write my backstory design a world etc i hear the 5e players cry and to that i say collaborative worldbuilding build the setting as you go adding elements as necessary during the course of play and sharing that burden between every participant the way things like belonging outside belonging do it but that s so much work in a game session i hear the retort skill issue get better at playing pretend and stop needing to play games with safety rails stopping you going off the railroad shiningdrill to that last point many of the games that are built for that kind of play have safety rails the rules will hold your hand and guide you through the act of collaborative storytelling helping build those skills to do it independently belonging outside belonging is a great example it specifies who is responsible for what aspects of the world and gives prompts for what kinds of things to add to a scene based on the resource economy and the interaction of other mechanical elements in addition to the narrative it also usually has explicit callouts for this thing is now retroactively true backstory being added at the table in my experience one of the reasons this scares 5e players is that dnd has absolutely nothing helpful to say on the topic and expects everyone to just have creative writing skills or at least for the gm to have those skills and be responsible for working in everyone else s ideas or for it to not matter at all because you re running a linear module yes wandering into the wilderness of the narrative with no guidance or skills is scary it s hard don t do it that way the 5e answer then becomes insane amounts of prep to stay in that comfy safety zone rather than developing tools and skills to navigate it spontaneously at the end of the day we are talking about totally different experiences to use vacation plans as an analogy the 5e character backstory crowd want a guided tour and think that adding their own stops on that tour is helping when really it makes the tour guide have to do more work meanwhile the play to find out players are out on an excursion already going wherever they want doing stuff i m not saying guided tours or planned routes are bad but it is not the same thing as going to a new place and just diving in there is also middle ground to be had like knowing the local landmarks and highlights but not having a specific itinerary anyway yeah backstories are double homework because the gm has to deal with them too cavegirlpoems i mean this is true to a certain extent and i would argue that games which give you no creative direction or prompts and drop you in at the deep end as you describe are badly designed games that often result in less good experiences doing insane amounts of prep to stay in the safety zone is a maladaptive response to a game which places a heavy burden on its participents and then refuses to do any of the heavy lifting itself people fall into this pattern because they re used to a fiddly complicated game with many potential specific mechanical details which expects them to work hard in session on the mechanical bits just to make the game work and which then doesn t even provide any prompts or tools to ease the cognitive load of creative work alongside the mechanical work it lumps you with so of course people shy away from the creative work the game is putting you under a heavy cognitive load and then not helping you with it a good dnd esque game either strips back a lot of the mechanical weight reducing the cognitive load and giving more space for the effort that creativity requires or it provides tools to help with this the most obvious being the good old random encounter table or it does both this is a big part of the success of osr games as they strip back the mechanics and provide a more an issue i m having with a v20 char is that i find path of metamorphosis resistance to sharing research and knowledge with other path followers difficult to square with both coterie play and with the themes you talked about of viscisitude connecting to themes of unifying flesh and existance into a gestalt how do you tend to have stcs or pcs square those circles cavegirlpoems answered my response is that this element of the path of metamorphosis is poorly designed for coterie level play it works well for npcs or in play styles where an individual pc isn t tied to interacting with a single coterie large pbp games or solo duet games where a character can be more of a loner and the game still functions as far as the thematics go however i think of metamorphosis as being an inherently transitory path it s followers believe rightly or wrongly that intellectual isolation is a necessary step to reach their goal kind of like how many insects isolate themselves in a cocoon to undergo metamorphosis tbh presumably when the vampire achieves azi dahaka they ll be at their desired destination and move from metamorphosis to another path that better fits their new understanding i ve played this concept myself before a tzim who moved from metamorphosis to the road of sin as she considered azi dahaka to be a state of absolute personal freedom it s very possible that a vampire who achieves azi dahaka will return bodhitsava style to help uplift others of course but while walking the path there s an understanding that metamorphosis needs to be achieved through one s own power the metaphor they might use is of a bird inside an egg until the bird is able to crack the egg itself it s not ready to hatch and cracking the egg prematurely will expose a fetus that can t exist in that exposed state killing it it s also worth considering that metamorphosis isn t simply vicissitude the path it demands that you alter your own body but this needn t be via vicissitude other disciplines can achieve this protean serpentis and necromancy all have their ways and it s very possible to do this manually perhaps via surgery or non vampiric sorcery the point of this is not to embrace vicissitude although vicissitude makes it easy but rather to ensure that the metamorphosis isn t held back by the limitations of their existing flesh the state metamorphosis seeks is one where mastery of one s self allows one to transcend to a higher state arguably then being absorbed into a hive mind is a failure state for metamorphocists compare and contrast this with the path of the assaku where the discipline takes over the vampire completely they might be in a state of constant flux but they aren t moving to a higher existence just a never ending series of variations on a fleshy theme to a metamorphocist this is absolutely a problem and they d view it with the same horror that a humane vampire views the clinical monstrousness of a metamorphocist i d argue that the path of metamorphosis exists in stark contrast to this tendency to dissolve the barriers between self and other seen in the assaku and that this is likely by design the path of the assaku wants you to teach others and spread its ideals almost evangelically whilst metamorphosis absolutely forbids it the reason metamorphosis demands intellectual independence and isolation of its followers is to avoid the pitfall of loss of self identity without the stricture to focus inward and disregard others seekers of azi dahaka risk failing their pursuit as the urge to simply immerse themselves in vicissitude and let go of the concept of self vs other takes over to prevent seekers from being entrapped in this fail state the path cautions against these dynamics my final bit of advice is that paths are written with their sins built in just as a vampire who follows humanity can still expect that they ll harm others and need to make conscience rolls so too you can expect a metamorphocist to have their conviction tested i hit a similar issue with a pc of my own that i m playing a staunch follower of the path of harmony should be firmly apolitical that the game s events keep pushing her to care about the politics happening around her is an interesting exploration of how she navigates her path when a metamorphocist is tempted to take intellectual short cuts or offer aid particularly accademic aid to another this is a good thing narratively you re testing how committed that character is to their path one of the interesting quirks of metamorphocists is that they have work arounds a metamorphocist cannot teach another but they aren t obliged to prevent others from learning and they can still learn from others so long as they get their by themselves essentially they think that knowledge kinda isn t valid unless you derive it from first principles or direct observation yourself so quite often this means that rather than a teacher student relationship metamorphocists form groups that are all treating each others as test subjects and case studies observing how each of the pack s approaches are playing out and drawing their own conclusions so a metamorphocist pc is perfectly able to interact with others but if they re rigorous about their path they won t simply say share what they know with another they ll guide them through the proc...
