d including leaders scientific socialism a theory to change the world the important contribution that marx made towards socialism was that he transformed socialism from utopian to scientific socialism the utopian socialists like robert owen saint simon and fourier had the greatest of intentions they thought socialism could be achieved by appealing to the moral side of humans by propagating ideas that the irish left attempts to mimic zohran mamdani s media game the upcoming by election candidates are up to all sorts of wacky adventures and they re hoping you ll join them helen ogbu is handing out packets of hunky dorys on a commuter train while ruth o dea has taken up urbex the activity of urban exploring abandoned buildings daniel ennis is getting on fuel protests farmers small business and rural communities under pressure it would be entirely understandable if our readers were to take a measure of enjoyment from the latest spat embroiling fianna fáil and its leader micheál martin castigated from within and outside the party for his handling of the fuel protests questions were bound to be raised about his leadership a reflection on sinéad morrissey s among communists fresh off the printing press sinéad morrissey s memoir among communists a story of growing up in a household of communist party members in belfast has drawn significant attention in the irish media morrissey s but a cogent analysis of the ff fg government well th well that was an odd one fintan o toole s recent appearance on the irish times podcast was what an opportunity for a commentator to let fly for a good hour or so with a raft of not necessarily connected observations based on a number of columns he wrote recently for that paper all loosely in some instances very loosely linked to fianna fáil s hundredth anniversary i had the faintest sense of a hint of sympathy for the party that it had come to this on that anniversary and i rarely if ever have any hint of sympathy for them in the main it seemed to be a not entirely plausible thesis that ff had initiated three class building projects first up a rural class under de valera then a working class one under lemass and then well it got a bit ropey apparently the third was a middle class though it wasn t quite clear when that was sometime during the late 1970s perhaps or later or well who knows now apparently we live in a bourgeois middle class society though that raised as many questions as it sought to answer still wasn t all this just the smallest bit parochial sure ireland was decades behind the rest of europe in respect of social educational and other provision but surely we were just replicating dynamics seen elsewhere even if belatedly fast forward to today and we can see that we face most of the challenges that face other advanced capitalist states albeit to a greater or lesser degree greater in the case of housing or put it another way form follows function ireland experienced a long 1930s that lasted until some point in the 1960s or even after but the state wasn t insulated and immune from broader socio economic pressures and subsequently it slid fairly neatly and with local variations into a not atypical european state o toole characterises some of what ff did in terms of creating classes as being done without reference to the irish people we were never asked but that s to confer far too much agency and insight onto ff so much of this was reactive keeping certain sectors of the economy sweet while others had to make their way and yes change occurred as was inevitable but remarkably little of it consciously shaped by ff other than as with fg ensuring those they respected or feared were looked after it s always seemed to me that ff and fg did about the bare minimum they had to under pressure from say the working class and others in order to retain power indeed it would hardly be a stretch to suggest that this is the template they have followed to this day unsurprisingly fianna fáil kind of got lost as the central part of the discussion as it roved hither the fuel protests and thither the extension of free education under donagh o malley who give him his due was truly progressive in respect of that somehow it got onto linehan s currently favoured terrain of the fringes of the culture war where he dragged in clinton h s line about deplorables this again in reference to the fuel protests suggesting that rhetoric isn t a very productive way to go about to develop a kind of better politics though what commentary was linehan referring to in the irish context given that overwhelmingly the consensus appeared to be that there was a genuine grievance at the heart of that phenomenon is difficult to tell sometimes one has the suspicion that to adapt eamonncork s line linehan is continually apologising to the invisible representative of lower middle class working class rural conservative hard right delete as applicable authenticity that he believes some cosmopolitan middle class socialist liberal elitist delete as applicable has been condescending to whether such a representative exists in the real world or not as o toole noted that s true re that sort of rhetoric but the opposite is not a particularly productive way to go either i think there s a tendency among some well meaning left intellectuals who want to say oh but they re working people we must embrace them yep in fairness o toole had one excellent observation that is worth considering that being that an aspect but only an aspect of the current coalitions unwillingness to do anything is that you have two parties locked together neither of whom acts as if they are quite in government each is waiting for its turn in the sun with the respective leader as taoiseach and neither feels quite in the government then again linehan has his moments and is the host of a weekly politics podcast in all this a listener might be forgiven wondering what precisely was o toole s expertise in all this regarding fianna fáil was or whether his musings were much more than what one might expect from someone of his milieu who is reasonably well informed that s grand that s a dynamic not unknown on this site with reference to this writer you re currently reading but when one heard o toole suggest that the catholic trinity had been replaced by university degree the mortgage and the white collar job it felt as if it was tilting sharply into david mcwilliams territory once o toole started talking about ai in breathless terms confidence in his analysis slipped yet further ironically that thesis was demonstrated perfectly this week coalition parties have traded blows over suggestions that further cuts to student fees could be endangered by overspending in the department of education the programme for government commits the coalition to continue to reduce the student contribution fee over its lifetime but the matter became a stumbling point last year and now risks re emerging on newstalk radio on tuesday morning minister for further and higher education james lawless was asked about demands from the department of public expenditure that other departments pay to partially backfill an overspending gap in the department of education and reports that could impact plans to reduce student fees it s too early to say but obviously in this situation at the moment where every other department has to contribute to a levy to support the department of education that places additional challenges for all of our spending plans and the comments drew a pointed response from fine gael whose minister hildegarde naughton runs the department of education the party s higher education spokeswoman maeve o connell said the next budget needs to provide additional supports for our hardworking families including those with students as part of their families i m disappointed that the minister is not interested in bringing to cabinet any reduction in student fees fine gael sources are suspicious that the fee reduction is not top of lawless s list of priorities while fianna fáil figures were privately critical of o connell s intervention that s not a happy crew or pair of crews small wonder the government feels rudderless what direction can they take when every win for the government simultaneously is a loss to their old rivals i d add in another angle which is that ff is somewhat ahead of fg and fg somewhat behind ff numerically in terms of tds martin was far too eager to constrain his partners in government with fewer cabinet positions how this works when fg takes the position of taoiseach is going to be fascinating for us not for them but o toole noted the ideological aspects of this the capture by neo liberalism of this government and how one has a recipe for a do nothing subcontracting administration indeed o toole was rightly sharp with linehan when the latter suggested it was an absence of ideology anything but as o toole noted an absence of ideology is an ideology and this is a very ideological government indeed in its own muted fashion further o toole rightly criticised those commentators who want less government and their prominence in political and public discourse or as he said those who see all government expenditure as waste and seem welded to the idea that we re going to screw it up again very good though another thought struck surely this was a bit ironic given that some of those very same commentators are seated around the very same table on the it podcast week after week wonder when o toole will be invited back on again 2033 suggests itself as a date that marking the centenary of the merger of cumann na ngaedheal the national centre party and the er blueshirts into fine gael now that s one edition of the it podcast i
