another scale model of kai tak airport posted on may 13 2026 by marcus wong i ve written about scale models of kai tak airport before and today i present to you a new one created by brian keene at avpro designs it features the main terminal building maintenance hangars and the landward end of the runway and it even has a full suite of apron building taxiway and runway lighting the airport model planes scale models leave a comment china railways 25c class carriages from south korea posted on april 8 2026 by marcus wong i ve written a few times before about different types of china railways carriage stock but one i d never heard of before is the small fleet of 25c class carriages built by hanjin heavy industries of south korea and which operated on the through train to hong kong for a via wikimedia commons cc by sa 3 0 there isn t much written about them in english but luckily chinese language wikipedia covers the design of the carriages the 25c type passenger car is a high speed passenger car designed by the ministry of railways in cooperation with south korea for the guangzhou shenzhen railway the reason for the cooperation with south korea was to introduce stainless steel carriage body manufacturing technology to china in 1994 changchun railway vehicles and hanjin heavy industries of south korea signed a contract for a total of 30 passengers carriages manufactured between 1994 and 1995 they included 8 first class soft seat cars 18 second class soft seat cars including two second class soft seat cars with staff broadcasting compartment two dining cars and two power generation cars the maximum designed operating speed was 200 km h being the only high speed passenger carriages in china at that time it was also the first time that china used a curved side carbody structure on railway passenger cars hanjin heavy industry was responsible for the design of the stainless steel car body and the assembly of 27 cars while changchun railway vehicles is responsible for the assembly of two second class soft seat cars and one second class soft seat broadcasting car and providing high speed 200km h bogies the first class soft seat carriage of the 25c type passenger car rz1 25c is a compartment car with eight compartments each with six seats and a capacity of 48 people the second class soft seat carriage rz2 25c adopts a 2 2 seating layout in each row without compartments and has a capacity of 72 people the second class soft seat carriage with a broadcasting booth has a capacity of 64 people two types of bogies were manufactured the cw 1a with steel springs and hydraulic shock absorbers beneath the power generation car and the cw 2a type with air springs and variable throttle valves beneath the other carriages both were derived from the british rail bt 10 design used on mk3 coaching stock the type 25c passenger car was the most advanced railway passenger car in china at the time all 25c type passenger cars use tinted glass and automatic doors that can be centrally controlled or individually controlled the door at the platform end is an automatic sensor control door and an airtight windshield is used each carriage was also equipped with an automatic electric tea stove and retention toilet the first of its kind on a chinese railway passenger car as well as information display devices the air conditioning power generation car is equipped with a whole vehicle fault self detection and monitoring system which can centrally monitor the opening and closing status of the doors of the whole train the axle temperature and has functions such as automatic alarm and fault handling procedures it was suitable for environments ranging from 20 c to 40 c their history in service after a series of tests the 25c type passenger car was assigned to guangzhou railway group now china railway guangzhou bureau group co ltd in 1998 and began to operate on the guangzhou shenzhen line the 30 carriages were combined into two sets of carriages to serve as the four pairs of guangzhou shenzhen intercity semi high speed trains every day using df11 type diesel locomotives for traction by october 21 2000 after china railway implemented the fourth major speed increase the 25c type passenger car was used to run through trains between hong kong and foshan and zhaoqing to replace the old 25b type soft seat cars from 2004 onwards one set was still used for the zhaoqing jiujiang through train while the other set was used for the danxia train running between shaoguan guangzhou and shenzhen with train numbers t351 352 353 354 and t761 762 763 764 respectively and their eventual retirement with the sixth china railway speed up campaign of in 2007 the 25c type passenger cars were retired from service and the carriages stored at the guangzhou rolling stock depot in december 2020 carriage rc25c 110673 was sent to the guangzhou railway museum formerly guangzhou south station and then moved to the zhaoqing training center of the guangzhou workers vocational skills training base in early 2022 additional carriages never having been ordered due to their high cost and issues with the bogie design the production of 25c carriages was not continued due to their high cost 10 million rmb per carriage compared to 6 million rmb for a 25t carriage produced by bombardier sifang power and only about 4 million rmb for a 25t carriage produced by cnr sifang the two cw series bogies designed by changchun railway vehicles co ltd were found to be inadequate in terms of high speed performance and structural strength in actual use the cw 2a bogie used in the 25c carriage once broke during use some 25k carriages that also used the cw series bogies also experienced problems such as broken traction rods and melting of rubber at the elastic positioning nodes of the axle boxes therefore the maximum operating speed was later limited to 160km h according to the provisions of the ministry of railways document no 431 of 2008 notice on clarifying the marking speed of various types of passenger cars in order to ensure the safe operation of passenger cars starting from august 31 2008 the speed marking of all 25c type vehicles was
