spacious luxurious and tasteful room a scene set in a not dissimilar milieu and featuring another pianist performing in a bygone era an audience elegantly attired in the fashions of some half a century back listens and looks on in admiration but the painter has elected to depict the pianist from behind as he sits at his instrument thus rendering him faceless and anonymous to slip into this image to take the place of this indefinite figure is as nothing it requires no effort perhaps it doesn t even require a conscious desire in all likelihood the child s teacher gérard philipe has seen the picture many a time before at many another lesson whether or not he s ever taken the time to study it in detail today his drowsy eyes settle on it more or less by chance maybe as much as anything he s simply too tired to turn away and pay attention to his pupil s playing but at any rate he continues to gaze at it his head resting on his arms until he finds that the musician at its center has film good morning お早よう ohayō isamu hayashi masahiko shimazu the younger of the two brothers at the center of the story cries out the english sentence i love you no doubt he picked it up at the language lessons that he attends with older brother minoru kōji shitara and he employs it freely and enthusiastically he says it to his mother kuniko miyake as he and minoru defy her by going off to watch a neighbor couple s kyōko izumi akira ōizumi television to the woman in said couple upon being forced to leave her house to his aunt yoshiko kuga when she gives him a small present one can t help wondering if this japanese boy of about six fully comprehends the meaning of what he s saying are these genuine if occasionally somewhat cheeky expressions of affection or does he primarily just enjoy the novel sound of these unfamiliar words at any rate there s something rather delightful in the unencumbered way in which he uses them as the rest of the movie will demonstrate communication speakeasy posts a challenge for bloggers and other readers to watch a new to them movie that fits a particular criterion and then write about it for march which is women s history month the topic is a classic film written or directed by a woman when i participated in a similar challenge last march i chose three movies directed by women so this time i decided to seek out the work of a female screenwriter i seemed to recall that kinuyo tanaka best known for her illustrious acting career in many classics of japanese cinema but also a director herself had worked with a female screenwriter on at least one of the six films she directed so i decided to check into that as it turned out there were two such collaborators sumie tanaka on the eternal breasts forever a woman and girls of the night and natto wada on the wandering princess tanaka no relation to kinuyo was particularly noted for her work with mikio naruse including repast lightning late chrysanthemums and flowing while wada frequently wrote for her husband kon ichikawa after looking over the titles on their filmographies that i hadn t already seen i settled on a 1951 movie co written by tanaka that sounded promising was still writing at the time of his death in 1975 at age ninety three leaving his last book unfinished the english author p g wodehouse produced a massive predominantly comic body of work that includes novels short stories plays film scripts and poetry among other genres while his oeuvre features numerous series and recurring characters there s little question that his most popular creations are bertram wilberforce wooster better known as bertie and his brilliant valet jeeves the pair made their debut in the 1915 short story extricating young gussie and wodehouse would continue to write about them for roughly the next sixty years all the way through to his last completed novel 1974 s aunts aren t gentlemen during wodehouse s lifetime a television adaptation called the world of wooster aired on the bbc from 1965 to 1967 and starred dennis price as jeeves and ian carmichael as bertie unfortunately most of the episodes are now considered lost a quarter century later in 1990 the classics sometimes as assignments for class sometimes on my own i was delighted to discover book a minute which offered humorous ultra condensed versions of a plethora of well known novels plays and other works i m just as delighted and more than a little surprised to see that it still exists after all these years looking exactly as i remembered it certain lines have stuck with me including one from the synopsis of a midsummer night s dream spoken collectively by hermia lysander demetrius and helena we love each other the wrong way around it s the kind of basic adaptable slightly vague set up that can describe a wide range of stories involving romantic muddles of all sorts and i found myself thinking of it as i rewatched the 1944 marc allégret directed movie les petites du quai aux film leave a comment at one point late in the 1970 film once upon a time there was a singing blackbird იყო შაშვი მგალობელი iko shashvi mgalobeli directed by otar iosseliani the camera s gaze drifts upward from the bed where protagonist gia agladze gela kandelaki has lain down for the night and comes to rest on the wall alongside it lingering there for a moment or two until the scene ends it could be that this conclusion to the shot is meant to depict the last thing gia sees before closing his eyes and falling asleep though the featured section of the wall doesn t seem to be in his direct line of vision whether or not a subjective element is at play the fact that the camera hangs on this image gives it a marked significance that isn t immediately apparent from its content alone there s nothing of obvious interest in it no framed picture or window or even a bug crawling along only the wallpaper with its dense and busy print of stylized flowers and long leaves curling in every direction so busy is it in fact that it s a tad difficult to make sense of it at first glance to take it all in but the details are of little importance what matters instead is its expressive evocative quality after spending the day and part of the previous evening in gia s company the viewer just might discern in its cluttered overlapping design a kind of graphic representation of his 2025 by erin in film leave a comment i just rewatched keisuke kinoshita s carmen comes home 1951 in preparation to write a post primarily focused on its sequel carmen s innocent love 1952 and i was struck by the ozu ness of this particular shot extending even to three of the actors involved chishû ryû takeshi sakamoto keiji sada the fourth is akio isono who never seems to have worked with ozu and to be sure sada didn t appear in the first of his four ozu movies until much later in 1958 considering how frequently these performers turn up in films produced by shochiku studios like this one i think it would be a mistake to read anything into their presence here but at the same time it s difficult to imagine that kinoshita and cinematographer hiroshi kusuda didn t have ozu in mind when they staged and framed this shot looking back over carmen comes home this may also be the sole scene that doesn t take place outdoors which makes it stand out still more kinoshita always an adventure the presented to him the imperious mrs hepworth helen haye quickly grows impatient bless the man can t you read she asks before he can respond maggie hobson brenda de banzie cuts in it s the italics which makes it difficult for him mrs hepworth she explains with a polite smile will glances at maggie his boss s eldest daughter with perhaps a hint of surprise it isn t the italics and no doubt she knows that as well as he does in fact he s holding the card upside down apparently without realizing his error to the viewer too her tactful and sympathetic lie on his behalf might come across as something of an anomaly although this incident occurs early on in the 1954 david lean directed film hobson s choice maggie has already established herself as a straightforward no nonsense business minded figure rather hard frankly she could tell mrs hepworth the truth about his illiteracy or she could remain silent and leave him to fend for himself instead she chooses kindness thereby protecting his dignity and maybe in some small yet not insignificant way bolstering his self respect for will and the viewer alike this revelation of a softer side to her may be unexpected but it s nothing compared to the as much as anything the 1957 keisuke kinoshita directed danger stalks near 風前の灯 fûzen no tomoshibi is a film of frustration approached from one angle at least and reduced to its simplest form it would be something of a miracle in and of itself what she gets instead is a devastating discovery of a wholly unexpected kind when she first appears on screen in the opening scene of the 1970 film i girasoli or sunflower giovanna sophia loren already looks like a widow with her black dress and her somewhat austere hairstyle this still young woman gives the impression of having taken on a role ill suited to her age of having accepted and maybe even resigned herself to her premature bereavement within seconds however she makes it clear that she s anything but resigned ma am if you have not received notification from the war ministry it means that your husband s death has not been verified says the man behind the counter at the office where she s seeking information about her husband antonio marcello mastroianni an italian soldier who s gone missing on the russian front during world war ii this non answer aggravates her and the more the man tries to explain that they know nothing
