and cornbread seeing a toddler in the family chow down on that meal for the first time i was reminded of my own raising ham beans cornbread and fried potatoes comprised perhaps the most frequent meal at our house nobody complained my early culinary preferences leaned strongly toward farm fare and easy prep considering my parents were born and raised in the bootheel i didn t taste such exotic dishes as chicken livers sauteed mushrooms or toasted ravioli until i was grown and on my own even then it was with great trepidation that i tried anything unrelated to oatmeal pb j tomato soup grilled cheese hot dogs and hamburgers naturally with my biased perceptions of new fangled foods that looked smelled or felt different to my preferred i viewed them as suspicious or inedible tasting them was out of the question for a long time so my perceptions limited as they were directed my perspective toward other foods that perspective was narrow and misguided for decades i missed out on a ton of good food around fun tables of great company before i decided to give my tastebuds a chance to decide for themselves these mind wanderings about perceptions and perspectives opened up a few new paths of informal research there are books on the causes and effects of these two concepts as well as detailed philosophical studies about the ramifications at first to me the two terms seemed almost synonymous then i delved into definitions and studies and confused one for the other for a bit simply quite simply perception is based on what we perceive through our senses it can be an idea or concept we latch onto rightly or wrongly we gravitate toward what we like and know disregarding evidence to the contrary this in turn forms our perspectives loosely defined as stances or outlooks our viewpoints perspectives are unique since we each bring to the table varying perceptions even in what seems to be the exact same scenarios for about sixteen years my younger siblings and i sat around the same kitchen table eating the same foods prepared by the same mother but i guarantee that we do not have identical perspectives about food or much else you ve heard there are three sides to every conceal from high school students who would suddenly be attentive a heel came off a shoe during morning duty now what some days it s hard to think on your feet the brake pedal became wedged between jeans up tripped on a crack in the sidewalk fell face first and mashed and skinned only my upper lip swollen for days if you ve seen my nose you wouldn t understand either how that happened during a summer visit with my grandparents i waited almost too long to visit the outhouse while keeping a vigilant watch for granddaddy longlegs and snakes that might try to keep me company the old sow decided back in the day re memorizing the declaration of independence in honor of the 250th anniversary seems manageable even for my 72 year old mind i m skipping the list for memorizing purposes only it s certainly worth the read and contemplation i refer to the declaration because it came to mind while researching the theme of the un s international day of happiness established on march 20 back in 2012 the 2026 theme focuses on physical and mental well being in the digital age the launch date for that report which will take a close look at the association between social media and happiness is tomorrow caring and sharing was the theme of the international march 20 holiday last year i m reading with great interest reports like global analysis of happiness and kindness how sharing meals supports happiness and connections how household size and family bonds relate to happiness how social connections improve the happiness of young adults how prosocial behavior reduces despair how unhappiness and distrust affect politics the un also publishes a ranking of the world s happiest countries finland has been at the top since 2018 the us didn t make the top ten or the top twenty on the 2024 compilations we are 24 between the uk and belize it will be interesting to see the 2025 rankings in the upcoming report update finland is still 1 now 9 years in a row the us went up one to does she either way you ll likely be a sad statistic that s probably the word that traveled among hummingbirds returning to ripley county each spring after i moved to my current home i loved the random swoop and swish from the infrequent visitors but i wanted more so i added to the number and style of feeders hoping to be a sort of union station for the busy flitterers my hope never materialized which is a good thing those attempts did more harm than good though hummingbirds see more colors than we do they are drawn to red so my feeders were of various red designs and held bright red sugar water that was a big mistake now we know the dye is not good for the birds don t use it also don t use any other sweeteners like fruit juice or honey or brown sugar major no no s if you want to protect hummingbirds the sugar water should be clear add one part granulated sugar not powdered to four parts water that s the only drink they need no need to boil the nectar to dissolve the sugar just shake and or stir to attract the customers if you make big batches the extra can be stored in the fridge for up to a week but keep an eye out for mold and toss if there are any tell tale signs keep the feeders clean smithsonian s national zoo and conservation biology institute recommends changing the water every other day and cleaning the feeders before each filling to deter the growth of backward they even hover sometimes i could hear the motion of their wings beating about 70 times per second more when they dive i guess at insects which are also part of a hummingbird s diet if i m really still and wearing bright colors an occasional one will flit about really close communing with hummingbirds makes my list of marvelous ways to enjoy a magnificent mid summer day neither the
