idea alert mode show file signatures on alert box expert community discussions all categories groups help twitter linkedin facebook youtube instagram trustpilot home welcome to the bitdefender expert community product features and ideation idea alert mode show file signatures on alert box thiojoe i really like the alert mode for the firewall i have it enabled the alert window i m referring to one thing i d like is a quick way to see if the file trying to access the internet is signed by a trusted signature because one of my main back of mind concerns is that some malware has renamed itself or replaced some legitimate exe and while being able to see the path of the file by hovering over the message if it s in a user level writable location such as local appdata theoretically malware could have simply over written the real exe so when apps tend to auto update themselves in the background which causes them to change and trigger a new bitdefender firewall allow prompt if it s within appdata i often find myself double checking the signature manually with the properties window via the view application button to take me to the path to make sure it s signed if it s expected to be maybe it could just show right under the usual application has changed message or even on hover like the path does like a green label signature whatever llc if it s signed and trusted and not an invalid signature obviously or gray label unsigned if unsigned rough concept idea for example why it would be helpful if i see the message the application spotify exe has changed and it s not signed that would be a big red flag for me but if i see that it s in the expected path and is signed i can rest easy allowing it but if it s unsigned that would make me want to investigate likewise if there s some familiar windows file in c windows system32 trying to run but i see it s not signed by microsoft that might also make me investigate find more posts tagged with active firewall status active comments alexandru_bd hello i appreciate you sharing this suggestion with us this is quite interesting i must say tagging camarie here to tell us if it can be done thank you once again and welcome to the bitdefender community camarie it is possible sure but i m not on that team and i can t speak for someone else the signature verification can prove in certain cases quite costly and i m not sure the alert should be made wait but forwarded to the guys involved sure thiojoe ah true i hadn t considered that for files signed via catalog signatures as opposed to embedded signatures those need to be hashed to be checked which can take a long time for very large files though i wonder if the fact that it detects if a file has changed suggests it already has been hashed anyway i guess the team would know about all that in any case i appreciate the consideration camarie yes caching would be probably the way to go or a some form of asynchronous call that would store and update the ui if it s still visible it is possible the signature info could be already computed inside another component we already have it running but this is something we have to check first in detail quick links all categories recent posts activity best of bitdefender support site terms privacy
