helping bill his martyr complex feels more like suicidal ideation he felt like it s his responsibility to save the world alone and that he can t ever open up to stan about anything he s failing in or he ll be mocked and sabotaged further he finally opens up to dipper but trusting anyone feels so hard for him there was so much internalized victim blaming that he couldn t trust his family with his trauma ford really believed that he had to be alone in life so much in order to be a hero that he never believed the zodiac to be possible until working with others was his literally last hope he feared trusting anyone that much ford learning that everything would be okay if he would just open up to his family and trust them with everything broken inside of him was the most perfect ending this book could ve had it really added so much depth to the very quickly paced finale of the show ford s family really saved him from himself it s easy to see gravity falls as a story of a faustian deal and a man making his own hell or a gateway to it at least but i see a drowning man who learned that his family loved him after a lifetime of thinking no one ever would he literally battles his demons awesomeness anonymous asked reading the new chapter of highway to home made me think a lot about the line the thought of seeing his brother unable to feel anything but fear made his stomach twist and its possibilites so i kept imagining what if stan talked to ford earlier and so only a portion of his emotions got eaten after stan got saved he lost the ability to feel fear guilt shame and love basically he became everything ford thought of him after the science fair betrayal an inconsiderate jerk that doesn t care about the consequences of his actions and only thinks about himself that s why at first he didn t even suspect something was wrong with his brother it was just him being his usual ungrateful asshole but deep down he knew something was off thinking about a person being a certain way and them actually being that way are two different things after all even fiddleford an outsider to all of this could tell stan was being off he was moving and acting all energetic and boisterous but there was a hollowness in his eyes if you stare just long enough stan on the other hand felt like a huuuge weight got released off his shoulders a type of freedom he didn t experience in ages if ever there s nothing to fear or long anymore earning millions doesn t matter anymore acceptance doesn t matter anymore forgiveness doesn t matter anymore family doesn t matter anymore he function as a pale version of himself but not enough to actually be himself just the guy people think he is this would be a rough one as while ford might be able so sense something s off it d be a while until he figured out what exactly and not until after they d had several fights because this stan has enough to be angry and get in fords face about fords yelling but not enough to care if he hurts fords feelings or admits to things he s done ford would still do his best to ward stan but he d have a harder time convincing stan to wear the wards and stan s jerky attitude make it hard to keep wanting in this case fiddleford becomes the mvp not having enough personal connection to be furious with stan s attitude and enough separation to see that stan s been through something traumatizing and is probably working through something then eventually bringing up the fact that something might be wrong with him it d probably be the lack of love or fear that would tip them off because if stan s love is missing then he doesn t care about anything not just ford but money or fame or his car and he isn t afraid of anything either so all it d take was one incident where his life is in some kind of danger like trying to climb out a window to get out of a moving house to admit that he hasn t felt afraid of anything since ford yoinked him or shamed or embarrassed or a lot of what happens well stan does that because that was a weird dream in the middle of his power nap of like five minutes and he s got nothing else going on so why not then he gets yelled at by ford for a few minutes until the loop resets and oh no that dream dorito was right and fords in danger and he s miles away and and ford resets and through a few trial and error calls stan manages to get ford to give him a general idea of what they re dealing with and how to save him one thing though everything stan needs is at fords house in oregon thats 20 hours away ford doesn t have that much time so stan s listening to his brother call him over and over helpless to do anything but its still early it hasn t even been an hour since ford got eaten there has to be something stan can do from here gets a genius idea if he says so himself this thing feeds on negative energy and its eating ford s helplessness and misery all stan has to do is cheer ford up make him unappealing get it to spit him out so stan starts answering the phone with jokes starts out with saying he knows its ford reminding him of the good times making him snort then chuckle get a few laughs here and there messes up once or terrified to leave just in case something he can t drive to oregon to do anything but but maybe cue break down as stan tries to grapple with the fact that ford might be dead which means when ford calls him again ten minutes later from his home phone stan s a blubbery mess too used to grabbing the phone for the last however long he d been sitting there to remember he s a sobbing mess and thats super embarrassing they have longer not cut off talk where fords still kind of out of it and stan s so relieved he isn t dead he s become a puddle then stan hightails it to oregon the moment ford says he s fine actually don t worry about bill he s got it somehow ford is surprised when stan appears at his door twoish days later like they didn t just have a whole thing over the phone where ford
