ann powers dey street books june 11 2024 443 pages kindle edition 13 99 amazon hardcover 24 49 ann powers writes highly readable books i thoroughly enjoyed reading weird like us many years ago and good booty about seven years ago add traveling to that list powers provides a comprehensive account of joni mitchell s life and career she covers her childhood in canada her early days as an itinerant musician and the journey of the singer and songwriter whom those of us of a certain age know so well the author admits to not having interviewed her subject in part because mitchell was recovering from her aneurysm as powers was writing the book and in part because she wanted to maintain that distance as a fan the author mentions the singer s two year marriage to the canadian musician chuck mitchell whose last name obviously she kept after their divorce she discusses mitchell s early pregnancy and her decision to put her daughter up for adoption powers writes about mitchell s serial monogamy moving from david crosby to graham nash to james taylor she tells us that mitchell s friendship with judy collins was short but that it lasted long enough for collins to record mitchell s both sides now mitchell took time away from touring and performing to work on her home in canada made possible i assume in part by royalties from that song powers pays a good deal of attention to the influence that jazz had on mitchell s work and the frequent collaborations she had with jazz musicians despite her affinity for the genre jazz musicians never really accepted mitchell as one of their own another theme that powers develops is that mitchell could be one of the guys unlike many female musicians mitchell could call the shots in a recording session and the men would listen mitchell does not get a free ride however powers discusses the period in which mitchell would go to clubs disguised as a black man the author makes a point of not letting mitchell off the hook we get a good deal of material about mitchell s later career powers writes about mitchell s marriage to larry klein who she calls her one and only genuine husband she writes about their collaboration and the albums they produced together those albums were well received but not great sellers powers writes about brandi carlile re recording mitchell s early album blue and the respect carlile developed for mitchell powers says she does not doubt that carlile has played a significant role in bringing mitchell back into the public eye not only as an icon but as a living presence the author mentions that in 2023 mitchell won the gershwin prize for popular song from the library of congress she doesn t discuss the pbs program about that award which carlile hosted which was delightful to watch ann powers does not hesitate to take the gonzo journalism approach in this book she inserts herself into the narrative whenever she deems appropriate when writing about mitchell s reunion with the daughter she put up for adoption powers mentions becoming an adoptive mother herself in collaboration with the birth mother and then abruptly ends the narrative saying that the story is not hers alone to tell powers writes not just about joni mitchell but about the larger pop music scene of the seventies in doing so she draws from and fully credits sheila weller s 2008 book girls like us which chronicles the lives and work of carole king carly simon and mitchell if you read and enjoyed that book you will find traveling every bit as engaging a fun upgrade posted october 14 2024 author mike christie filed under socal life web tech leave a comment terry and i recently upgraded our iphones from our old iphone 8 devices to the one short of the latest model the iphone 15 i needed to upgrade mine so my new apple watch would function but we had been discussing doing so for a while terry had even dropped in at the apple store when she was in the vicinity so she was ready i immediately upgraded from the ios seventeen point something that came on the phone to ios 18 so it would support my apple watch we re glad that we made the move the display is larger and sharper if i m not near my iphone text messages show up on my apple watch the battery life seems longer while i don t need to worry about putting it on the charger every evening i m still doing so as part of my daily routine i don t miss that old home button at all navigation is much smoother without it it is easier to flip through multiple photos in a text message and the startup is faster there are a couple of minor downsides i lost a few apps that are no longer available in the app store but i didn t use them much and they were easily replaced for most apps the passwords carried over although for a few i had to re enter my login information the purchase process was enjoyable we had to wait a bit for a salesperson at the verizon store but once she showed up we had her full attention she got us the phones and accessories we wanted and she even transferred all our apps data settings and contacts to our new phones the one thing our salesperson failed to do was to offer us ac adapters for our usb c cables that would have been nice because with the iphone 15 apple provides the usb c cable but no ac adapter but i quickly addressed that issue with a couple of orders to amazon and ebay we re happy with our upgrades and i cheap he considers it a virtue i don t agree cheap and quality don t often sync up on the other hand martin mull in his parody of mid twentieth century middle class america a paler shade of white talks about the family who furnished its living room from sears paying full retail that s not my parents exactly but it comes close to the vibe i grew up with that too may not be the ideal approach when i lapse into cheapness i generally regret it case in point i recently wrote about getting a smart watch i m taking a telephone and zoom pulmonary rehab class and i need to count my steps each day a smart watch is easier to manage than keeping up with a pedometer i bought an off brand model from amazon for less than fifty dollars calibrating it against my oximeter it did a good job of measuring my pulse and oxygen what i didn t factor in was the fact that it was under counting my steps by twenty five to fifty percent that means that i m telling the pulmonary rehab folks that i m making less progress than i actually am so i bought an apple watch for just over four hundred dollars doing so meant that i had to upgrade my 2017 vintage iphone 8 to a new iphone 15 that s been a fun upgrade more on that later now i m getting a more accurate step count and it supports many of my iphone apps not only that if i m sitting at my computer or spend too long taking a nap it tells me to stand up all good stuff meanwhile terry took my original smart watch and calibrating it against her pedometer it s giving her more accurate readings than it gave me who knows so being cheap rarely works out i didn t buy the cheapest apple watch but i didn t buy the high end either i bought the middle of the line and it is working out well so far the age of loneliness posted october 3 2024 author mike collection of essays and the age of loneliness did not disappoint laura marris writes about nature her significant other and her late father what i didn t see in the book was a lot of loneliness early in the book marris writes about tardigrades tiny creatures that have survived all five mass extinctions and have been sent into space i noted tardigrades played a role in a recent book i enjoyed alien earths which explores the possibility of life on planets beyond our solar system matt the guy that became marris s boyfriend did an art exhibit that involved a tardigrade marris writes about gps about the oxford junior dictionary dropping words to make way for new ones related to science and technology and about horseshoe crabs she has a lot to say about horseshoe crabs in fact they play a key role in the testing of medicines they are often harvested illegally and their future is precarious the author writes fondly of her father he was a british national and came to the united states in his role as a sociologist but he was a nature lover and taught marris about sea creatures and showing respect for them he was also an active bird watcher and marris describes learning about the avocation after his death from one of his friends her father once took a solo road trip from the west coast to the east coast to take a break from his wife fortunately they reconciled to which marris says she owes her existence marris includes a long essay about love canal including its history and the toxic mess it became informative but not the most enjoyable essay in the book american geography is not the author s strong point she writes about route 80 when it is in fact interstate 80 or i 80 she says that route 66 became i 40 it did not interstate 40 follows roughly the path of the old highway 66 but it is not the same and i 40 ends in barstow route 66 went all the way to santa monica lack of knowledge of the us highway system notwithstanding if you re in the market for an eminently readable essay collection you need not look any farther than the age of loneliness sage warrior posted september 30 2024 author mike christie filed under audiobooks books leave a comment sage warrior wake to oneness practice pleasure choose courage become victory valarie kaur read by the author and harjit dolly kaur brar random house audio september 10 2024 14 hours and 28 minutes 19 69 for audible members more for nonmembers purchased with an audible credit if you have read valerie kaur s first book see no stranger and were expecting something similar in sage warrior adjust your expectations this is a very different book while see no stranger was mostly autobiography sage warrior delves into the sikh story in india the book has a structured format there are eleven sections each section has two chapters the first chapter is kaur s retelling of a portion of sikh history and legend kaur doesn t differentiate the second chapter recounts a trip kaur and her family made to india where they visited the places described in the narratives she ends the second chapter in each section with a guided meditation kaur has a couple of themes that run through the book one is that when we encounter a new individual who might be a rival or when we discover an aspect of ourselves with which we are uncomfortable we should respond you are a part of me i do not yet know the other is a carryover from see no stranger when we encounter darkness we should ask is this the darkness of the tomb or the darkness of the womb the author keeps us challenged she says that there are no monsters only people who are wounded perhaps that is true of the guy with the orange hair who is running for president again but i have trouble accepting it still kaur is a fighter for equality and for wiping away discrimination based on race class religion or gender in my mind i gave see no stranger a rating of nc 17 mostly because of sexual content and descriptions of intimate personal interactions sage warrior comes close to the same rating but due to the violence in the sikh tales in one chapter near the end of the book i skipped to the end because there was too much violence for my taste valarie kaur does a superb job of reading her own work as she did in see no stranger but i had trouble keeping straight all the characters in the sikh stories that might have been easier seeing the names on the printed page or e reader screen harjit kaur brar recites the punjab poetry and scripture in the original which kaur then renders in english given kaur s presentation skills however i would recommend the audiobook sage warrior is not what i was expecting but it offers insight into sikh tradition and philosophy as well as a presentation of kaur s revolutionary love philosophy living on earth posted september 24 2024 329 pages kindle edition 14 99 amazon hardcover 23 19 in his book other minds author peter godfrey smith writes about intelligence and consciousness particularly from the perspective of the octopus a book i very much enjoyed he also wrote metazoa animal life and the birth of the mind which i somehow missed when it appeared in 2020 smith considers living on earth the third book in the series although he makes clear that you don t need to have read the first two for this last to make sense smith writes about james lovelock s gaia hypothesis which posits that the earth is a living organism while smith does not fully support that approach he points out that while the temperature of the sun has varied the average temperature of earth has remained constant in a range to support life he writes about cause and effect smith notes that the purpose of a sponge drawing in and expelling water is to provide it with nourishment but that process also helps to filter seawater he writes about the difficulty in making distinctions smith notes that a coral polyp secretes a material that creates a matrix around it he asks whether this is a home for the animal or actually a part of the animal itself he also provides an interesting tidbit in the ocean animals have different body plans on land all animals are bilateral the author writes a lot about evolution for example how birds evolved from dinosaurs smith has an interesting take on taxonomy he writes on one side are horses deer dogs on the other primates with a collection of rodents and rabbits not the divisions i learned
