panicled aster lboxg 5 this perennial herbaceous plant is 1 3½ tall branching occasionally the central stem and lateral stems are light green to dull red sometimes shallowly grooved with vertical lines of white hairs older lower stems sometimes become brownish woody looking and smooth photo credit c 2014 katy chayka https www minnesotawildflowers info flower panicled aster lboxg 3 alternate leaves occur along the entire length of the stems becoming gradually smaller in size as they ascend these leaves are up to 5 long and ¾ across narrowly lanceolate tapering to acute tips and have toothless margins or sparingly toothed the bases of the leaves are wedge shaped cuneate they are either stemless or short stemmed the upper leaf surface is medium to medium dark green and smooth while the lower leaf surface is slightly more pale and may be sparsely short haired below basal leaves are broader and more variable in shape with winged stalks during cold autumn weather sometimes the foliage becomes purple withered leaves are brown and curled and tend to persist on the stem rather than fall off photo credit c 2014 katy chayka https www minnesotawildflowers info flower panicled aster lboxg 1 the central stem terminates in a panicle of flowerheads up to 8 long and 4 across the branches of these panicles are similar to the stems except they tend to be more hairy and more grooved each daisy like flowerhead spans ½ ¾ across consisting of 20 50 white narrow ray florets and a yellow center disk that is initially yellow but later become orange red photo credit c 2009 katy but pale at the base somewhat hairy and surrounding the base of each flowerhead there are numerous scale like floral bracts phyllaries that are erect to ascending and arranged in three to six layers with the outer layer shorter than the inner each phyllary is 2 4 mm long light to medium green linear oblong in shape and smooth the florets are replaced by clusters of cypselae each cypsela is about 1 5 2 mm long gray to dark gray narrowly oblong in shape slightly flattened and finely hairy with small tuft of dull white to yellowish hairs pappus at its tip folklore in the language of flowers asters represent daintiness patience wisdom and charm a gift of these flowers showed the giver s deep affection toward the recipient culinary and medicinal uses there are no reported uses of panicled aster for food asters contain toxic triterpenoid saponins these phytochemicals have a bitter flavor and soapy quality however those same phytochemicals are antimicrobial accordingly asters have been historically employed for a variety of medicinal uses the plant has been used for its antifungal and antiseptic qualities the iroquois brewed an infusion of the leaves to treat fevers and coughs a decoction of the roots sometimes used in poultices to treat wounds and pain a salve prepared from the dried and powdered plant has been used on skin abrasions smoke from the crushed blossoms was inhaled in the treatment of nosebleeds wildlife value the nectar and pollen attract many kinds of insects including bee flies bombyliidae beetles beewolves philanthus spp blood bees sphecodes spp
