Text of the page (random words):
daniel julie daniel julie this blog will keep you posted on all our adventures hilarities mishaps opinions musings and whatever else we want to post wednesday july 15 2015 a decade later ten years ago today i boarded an airplane and said the saddest goodbye of my life as the plane lifted into the air i was no longer on german soil and i was heading home after nearly 22 yes 22 months of being a mormon missionary i was saying aufwiedersehen to many things all at once and my heart was breaking i was ready for my mission to be over but that didn t make the farewell easy i will not give my missionary service a grade so to speak but i had no regrets i had done my honest best and i felt satisfied with the work i had done i felt god was satisfied with my work too i have thought about my mission every single day for the last decade not because my little family is a direct result of my mission but because it was a significant 22 month long life changing event at my core i am the same person now as i was before my mission but my mission greatly effected the way i see the world my place in the world and how i view others i received my mission call in august 2003 to the germany munich austria mission i had been to that area before as a player on a soccer team when i was 15 my memories of germany were tainted by homesickness and culture shock so i didn t look forward to going back for a whole 18 months but i ve always been fascinated by the two world wars and was interested to get to know the german people and understand more about about their culture and history by the time i entered the missionary training center in october 2003 i was really excited to go after an enjoyable couple months in the mtc i went to germany to actually work when the plane touched down in munich i remember suddenly feeling completely inadequate and terrified after the first couple months i felt more comfortable with the language and with the missionary lifestyle i loved my mission president and his wife they were warm and encouraging they taught me about self compassion and grace i had wonderful companions perhaps that s why i never minded being literally 24 7 with any of them from them i learned about communication hard work apologizing forgiveness humility organization goal setting how to have fun while working personal happiness and responsibility thoughtfulness generosity sacrifice and love i worked with many impressive missionaries one elder was so outstanding i married him my purpose as a missionary was to invite people to listen to the message about christ and the lds church that i had to share i always enjoyed it when people were receptive and interested in what i had to share with them but many of my most inspiring memorable moving experiences were with people i only talked to once i was shown more hospitality generosity kindness and vulnerability than i ve ever experienced before or since looking back i recognize what a privilege it was to actually be invited into peoples homes mostly showing up at their door without any advanced notice that people let us in at all is a miracle in itself also there were people who took sometimes up to 30 minutes to talk to me on the street another miracle as a missionary i always thought it was special to be present for the first prayer someone had ever uttered aloud or silently in their lives or in years now i am almost reduced to tears thinking about what a total honor that was praying at all let alone in front of others especially for the first time is an act of vulnerability and faith that i did not fully appreciate as a missionary i don t miss being a missionary but i still get homesick for germany and its people thanks to facebook i keep in contact with a few friends i met there i am so grateful for the internet that makes that so easy if i could do my mission over again i would listen more than talk granted my job as a missionary was to talk and teach but i wish i had listened more to better understand the hearts of the people i interacted with i may have had more success and i certainly would have learned even more and made more lasting friendships every now and then someone asks me what the most important thing is that i learned from my mission after ten years i can say i believe the most important thing i learned is this hope yes there is evil in the world but there is so much good if we focus on what makes us alike and celebrate our differences rather than divide ourselves based on them there is no limit to the good that could be brought about in the world we all want the same things love belonging peace happiness god knows we all have our own lessons to learn and our own paths to take our job as fellow travellers is to make others journeys as pleasant and full as we can when my family greeted me at the airport after my mission all i could think to say to them was thank you for letting me go today a decade after that gratitude is still what i m filled with more than anything i will always be unspeakably grateful for that experience fresh home off the plane july 15 2005 posted by julie at 11 28 am 2 comments thursday april 3 2014 lucille s birth six days ago i gave birth to lucille saying that so simply doesn t do justice to the magnitude of the experience but everytime i think about that day i get a knot in my throat and my eyes get watery admittedly i ve been tired and hormonal but see giving birth is a soul experience by that i mean that there is no part of you that is not involved effected or changed when you re having a baby it is a total physical emotional spiritual and intimately social experience i have been forever changed by bringing this little girl into the world at 2am on her due date march 27 my water broke my water broke with david too so i knew what was going on and kind of what to expect i called my doctor and labor and delivery took a shower ate some breakfast then called my friend to let her know we d be bring david over i had been having some mild but irregular contractions all week that became a little more intense after my water broke as soon as we got in the car to take david and head to the hospital the contractions stopped we parked at the hospital and as we got out of the car a man got out of a car nearby and asked if we could give him a jump haha daniel looked at me and for a second i thought he might say ok but instead he said sorry i would but my wife s in labor here so i can t the guy said oh ok and we headed inside and up to the triage at labor and delivery i was admitted to the hospital and sent to a delivery room i still wasn t having any contractions and i really wanted to avoid getting pitocin to induce labor i d had that with david and didn t want it again so i put on my slippers and walked around the halls for a while hoping the walking would encourage contractions to start up on their own after a couple hours and still no contractions i reluctantly resigned myself to the idea that unless i wanted to draw this labor out for who knows how long my labor with david was 25 hours i would need the pitocin my doctor came in to check on me and i told him let s get this show on the road so they started the pitocin after a while i asked for some iv pain meds that were short acting 45 minutes or so and wonderful at taking the edge off the contractions and helping me keep relaxed through them the labor progressed relatively quickly the baby was doing great and after about 6 hours i was feeling ready to push with the contractions because my water had broken the doctor didn t want to check my dilation very often to avoid risk of infection so as i was reaching the most difficult part of the labor i noticed him and the nurse standing nearby watching me trying to gauge where i was based on how i was coping with the contractions they told me i wasn t quite there yet and not to push that s when daniel told me that they had moved the baby table near the bed and that it wouldn t be much longer i d had my eyes closed to help me concentrate on relaxing and breathing the contractions were getting more and more intense and closer and closer together to the point that i couldn t not push anymore i said something about needing to push and the nurse got really stern told me to look at her face and she said julie do not push i tried so hard but i just couldn t i heard her page my doctor and a baby nurse a minute later my doctor was back they rolled me over i had been laying on my side and immediately told me to push because her head was right there i pushed 2 or 3 easy pushes and she was here the doctor let daniel pull her out he pulled david out too and lay her on my chest i looked at her face and the rest of the world melted away it was just her i couldn t hear anything else or see anything else or feel anything but amazement and love and joy it was a very significant moment for me daniel was a terrific coach i am certain that i could not have done it without him he held my hand said exactly what i needed him to say and he wasn t even feeling very well at one point he left the room for a minute and it was nearly impossible for me to maintain my focus without him there he was 100 present with me and i never felt alone i also love that he was able to deliver lucille lucy is doing great at her 4 day check up she had already regained her birth weight plus 3 ounces she s a good eater a good sleeper and is absolutely beautiful before she was born i was worried that i wouldn t find her as cute as i found david silly she is just as perfect as he was lucy s name means god s promised light and she really is a light a ray of sunshine a symbol of hope and love i can t wait to see what good she will do in the world as she grows i m so grateful she s here now some photos proud daddy and his little girl david insisted on helping carry lucy in her car seat to the car posted by julie at 12 59 am 5 comments friday march
