t get much attention in comics or fandom recently i really like his story of how he has to straddle a line of fitting into the white heteronormative patriarchy while still being himself i knew that i wanted to write a story about jaime quietly living on the fringes of his own identity but finding another older hero who would understand how he s feeling was difficult after some thought and struggling to fit other characters into a blue beetle story i remembered that guy was one of jaime s mentor figures in his original run and it came easy from there this story represents a multigenerational bond between heroes and the importance in ones own coming out to have an older mentor who can help you through struggles that they faced potentially without someone there with them telling them it was okay to feel those feelings jaime has a lot of fears and doubts about what it means to not fit in within the blue beetle identity as well as out of costume and that s where guy a trans man steps in as someone who has come to terms with himself and who he is as a man and as a hero its a story of identity and family the one you re given and the one you make and decide for yourself i really hope readers will like my take on both guy and jaime who both are so very queer to me and are equally important in their roles as new and long established heroes and people the line between having a heroic secret identity and having a queer identity is so thin i think the hazing of that separation in this story will help readers feel a deeper understanding and closeness to these characters like i do artlyloser i love these depictions of these characters i would have loved to have a mentor to talk to like guy there s always something so healing about seeing two generations of queer people get to share experiences getting to have those connections is such a treasure the little glimpses through guy and jamie s lives are definitely my favorite part to draw all the details and into the secret six for a long time sort of just mashing all my favorite characters together i didn t originally intend to do that when i started writing my script but i m glad it went in that direction what does this story mean to you to me it s funny and joyful it encompasses the feeling of being in queer spaces full of life but still feeling a deep grief it s a queer character study really funny and sad like all of our lives these days i think it s mostly funny though what do you think readers will love about this story i don t know maybe everyone will hate it i really can t guess regardless i had fun writing it honestly i think weis art is the highlight weis how did this story resonate with you the ghost maker is such a character when i first saw him in batman fear state i was just like how is this guy so cool drawing this story i loved how he stays totally smooth and confident even when he s on the back foot such a vibe plus this is my first time drawing a drag queen inspired you to write this story our big inspiration for this comic was a desire to explore different kinds of pride the way we decided to go about this during this project was to showcase both queerness and disability though a story about redemption what does this story mean to you to us this story means honoring the legacies of the writers and artists who have shaped joe wilson harold allnut and dick grayson we wanted to pay tribute to their work by telling a new story with our own twist on things there are many underserved characters in dc and we hope we ve done right by a few of them in this comic what do you think readers will love about this story we think people will love how this story puts joe wilson front and center in a take on him that embodies optimism we also wanted to highlight two characters who have similar disabilities while staying true to the uniqueness of each character we hope this story will speak to our readers samix asb how did this story resonate with tempestwind what inspired you to write this story i wanted to examine a what if scenario where poison ivy is the one to free harley s mind from the confines of society instead of the joker along the way it become a metaphor for the snake tempting eve in the garden of even with forbidden knowledge what does this story mean to you harley s canon origin story is a very important example of how joker abuses manipulates and controls his own narrative i wanted a story where harley had more choice in the matter but one where you still aren t sure if she made the right choice or what the future looks like for her what do you think readers will love about this story i think the gotham by gaslight setting is enjoyed by many but underutilized by dc we wanted to show it some love while also shoving as much story and metaphor as we could into every single panel the hope is that every time you re read the story you uncover another layer of it bleepsy what inspired you to write this story it really all came together for me with the setting transposing these characters and their struggles into the repressive antiquated world of gotham by gaslight felt like such an interesting way to highlight them and the elements of the story that resonated with me best what does this story mean to you i have very often felt a lack of ownership over my own identity with so many things about myself being decided by others which is mirrored particularly by harley s struggle with having her identity tied so strongly to the joker exploring the importance of taking charge of one s self in the face of an unwelcoming world has been vital for me and was always key to this story what do you think readers will love about this story harley and ivy are for good reason one of the most well loved and well known queer couples in comics for me one of my favourite parts of au fiction has been seeing familiar characters in unfamiliar settings to see what about them changes and what stays the same we re hoping we ve managed to capture the characters we love so well and bring a new twist to their relationship that honours the reasons why they are so beloved while also providing something new ravendraculina how did this story resonate with you it s harley and ivy what s not to love about gotham s top wlw couple as a lesbian myself i really wanted to illustrate a comic featuring a sapphic pairing this has been a delight as it has everything that a woman who loves women could possibly ask for a yearning gay and her monstrous soon to be girlfriend what has been your favorite part to illustrate i enjoyed illustrating the more surreal aspects this comic really delves into the horror aspect of ivy and harley is loving all of that it s a dark gothic romance with some harley charm favourite characters and i am so drawn to her fluidity in both motion and life batman catwoman trail of the gun features a short scene where she applies that fluidity towards donning masculine disguise seeing her in that baseball cap and jacket lit a strong spark of inspiration and i ve been thinking about her relationship with gender and non conformity ever since what does this story mean to you to me the story is ultimately about visibility fluidity and sense of self selina tries to control how and when people see her in heists and gender and relationships and even with herself in the mirror it was important to me to try and capture her sense of gender in a more abstract way than just noun driven labels what do you think readers will love about this story i think they will really love the art cassiferlynn did such an incredible job with it especially in the beautiful colours that accompany you through the adventure i hope they ll enjoy stepping into selina s world for a day cassiferlynnart i love the story it hit me right in the nonbinary feelings when i read it for the first time i m a big fan of when gender is described in abstract terms the ending page is my favorite
