challenge riders to complete a scenic and often challenging course within a specified time limit emphasizing camaraderie endurance self sufficiency and personal achievement rides start from the we ll get to all the rides coming up but first a few pieces of news we want to welcome back our fearless presidente from his insane 7460km bike ride race from the arctic circle to tarifa spain right near the strait of gibraltar climbing over multiple mountain ranges and dealing with a brutal headwind for weeks on end he completed it in a little more than a month averaging well over 200k a day make sure to ask him questions about it while out on rides this fall next as you know emily ranson our hardworking rba had a baby at the beginning of the year babies as they do take up a lot of time and so she has decided to step down as rba at the end of the year kyle mckenzie has volunteered to step up from being a member on the board into the rba position starting in 2027 he had this to say i am looking forward to being rba for dc randonneurs a club that has very much changed my life and to continue the long tradition of hosting brevets in the dc area thankfully emily and other past rbas like gardner will be around to provide guidance as i get up to speed one of my goals as rba is to have a good showing of dcr members at paris brest paris next year let s be sure to thank emily for her dedication and hard work she will be sorely missed as rba editor s note emily has been the behind the scenes heart of this club for the past several years we could not function as a rusa affiliated club without all of her tireless volunteer efforts eagled eyed members may have noticed the fall schedule is starting to populate on the dcr website speaking of the team dart event that is one of the most fun events we do all year it is tentatively scheduled for october 24th as we nail down the booking with heavy seas brewery more details to come perhaps what will interest some of you the most is that mimo is completing the planning for our 2nd annual gap c o ride like last year the club will be providing transportation from dc up to pittsburgh for a fee and then you simply ride the 500 km back to dc in less than 43 hours last year s event was incredible and we look forward to hosting this brevet for years to come and finally the bread and butter of our schedule is the 200k brevets we do in the fall some are placeholders right now on the schedule but we ll of course do our flat as a pancake ride on the eastern shore in november and bill will cook us up a doozy out of woodbine in ranging from 100 kilometers to 1 200 kilometers 60 750 miles in length rides start from the baltimore washington region the terrain we ride ranges from the flatlands of the eastern shore to the rolling hills and valleys of the piedmont and the sometimes steep flanks of the appalachian mountain ridges to our west our routes many of which we ve ridden for years take quiet back roads through gorgeous and varied scenery with regular stops for supplies and rest our rides are unsupported there is no sag wagon but we ride together creating bonds of friendship and camaraderie along the way our ride organizers and volunteers work hard to make sure that every rider is accounted for from start to finish our rides are timed with riders required to reach intermediate control points as well as the finish within a set window of time our style of riding is known as allure libre meaning riders ride at their own pace within the overall time limit which is determined by the length of the course rather than riding as a group at a pace set by its leaders which is the audax style of randonneuring randonneuring is non competitive but we challenge ourselves and each other to ride farther to ride faster to ride longer than we might have thought possible we aspire to relentless forward progress but take time to help each other when in need whether that need is for emotional support an energy
