Text of the page (random words):
d a little virtual birthday party for him so everyone could say hi we attempted to sing happy birthday but it was pretty pathetic because of the internet glitches delays for his birthday gift he ordered a new ipad and apple pencil so he can take notes at work without having to carry around a bunch of notepads only one more year until the big 5 0 two weeks after tuell s birthday we headed back to abilene for bo s 80th birthday bo had planned on doing his big bike riding fundraiser for meals on wheels where he would ride 80 miles on his 80th birthday but his fall and subsequent surgery postponed that sunday night their small group joined with another small group in their church for a potluck so we all attended that at the building becky had brought cupcakes to celebrate on monday his actual birthday becky had invited some family who live in abilene to stop by and wish him a happy birthday in the morning robert and joellen came by and opted to stay outside for the visit because of covid for lunch we treated bo to heff s burgers and avalie was able to join us around her class schedule after lunch tuell set up our gift he had compiled a bunch of pictures from each year s green family vacation into a slide show we had a good time looking back at the memories and seeing how tiny the cousins were in the middle of the afternoon mittie and dale stopped by for a birthday visit excuse my stalker pic i know this was not how bo had planned to spend his 80th birthday laid up in his recliner instead of biking 80 miles but hopefully he enjoyed it anyway posted by sharla at tuesday september 28 2021 no comments sunday september 26 2021 avalie returns first here are some random pics that avalie has sent since starting acu she is keeping busy like so busy she hardly has time to communicate with us but i d much rather have it this way than her crying and wanting to come home she has definitely found her place all too often her place seems to be the local sonic this is her first day of school pic love that she remembered to do this for me this is her and her roomie anna at the west texas fair just a couple weeks into school avalie and some of her friends decided to come to dallas for an acu football game the girls drove in friday night and they and three of their guy friends hung out at our house off and on all weekend we were happy to be the hangout spot we really didn t see avalie much at all that weekend despite them sleeping here but it was good to meet some of her friends if only briefly posted by sharla at sunday september 26 2021 no comments i hate covid i have the sweetest next door neighbors on the planet and both of them caught the virus it took steve on aug 31 kim is heartbroken we all are i really really hate this stupid virus posted by sharla at sunday september 26 2021 no comments bo knows so remember when i said bo fell on his bike while we were moving avalie into her dorm at acu he ended up with a broken femur and surgery to put a band around the break tuell wanted to be there for the surgery so he drove back home with me and melaina so she wouldn t miss her first day of school then drove back to abilene for a couple days he drove home friday night just in time to pack livian up for her move to austin it was a crazy week bo walked with a walker for a short while then crutches and currently he is down to just one crutch he had a setback last week when his hip popped out of socket but a quick trip to the er took care of that he is one tough cookie here is the article about him that ran in the abilene reporter news abilene s bo knows this he ll be back on his bike to ride 80 miles his 80th year meals on wheels volunteer took a tumble and broke his right femur delaying his fund raising ride until he can pedal again greg jaklewicz abilene reporter news thirty years ago we found out what bo knows that was bo jackson who played pro football and baseball in the same year a first in modern sports abilene s bo knows too bo green knows how to stay young bo also knows the years can take their toll on athletes and this week birthday boy bo knows disappointment he ll be resting in his recliner tuesday not from taking an 80 mile bicycle ride as he had planned monday his 80th birthday instead he s recovering from a recent spill on his bike that fractured his right femur and delayed his adventure to benefit meals on wheels until next year sometime in my 80th year he vowed his disappointment mainly is not being able to raise money for the nonprofit some friends have asked if they should wait to donate or just do it that was another catch phrase started about the time as the bo knows advertising campaign bo jackson though doesn t know bo green in abilene bo s plan to pedal our bo is an adventure optimistic and an example of being as young as you want to be last summer meals on wheels volunteer grant boone played 100 holes of golf on what turned out to be a 108 degree day to raise money for the local nonprofit the organization s annual fundraising golf scramble had been bogeyed by covid that was really really a good thing bo said of boone s effort it got him thinking about what he could do i didn t want all the glory going to the young people he quipped he was cycling one day in august 2020 when he decided to go the extra mile for each of his years to prove that i m not old bo mapped a route that would take him east from abilene starting at the new taylor elementary school on e n 10th street to elmdale road south and then west to its intersection with fm 107 and then east on fm 18 to elmdale road returning to taylor it s about a 18 20 mile course that he would do four times he invited others to join him if not for all 80 miles maybe one of the loops cycling buddy darren wilson said he d go the distance with bo becky bo s wife would operate the lap rest stop at taylor bo also knows this his athletic achievements wouldn t be much fun without becky if he is sir edmund hillary she is tenzing norgay they have climbed mountains and we ll get to that she has been a meals on wheels volunteer for so long it might have been called meals on wagon wheels when she started at university baptist church her service dates to the mid 1970s pretty much when the meals program was on training wheels nine years ago bo joined her on a wednesday route he had retired as a math professor at abilene christian university and dealt with leukemia oh about that leukemia challenge he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in june 2009 as he finished his 37 year college teaching career that began in 1972 his brother who lived in league city was a bone marrow match and a transplant was done that december r c by the way is 10 years older than bo when m d anderson collected his stem cells bo said he reported that they told him he was the oldest person they had collected from this stuff must run in the family after five years all was well for bo and he looks at leukemia in the rear view mirror i consider myself cured he said two years after his transplant bo and becky hiked the grand canyon rim to rim over three days a friend suggested he walk in the local relay for life in 2010 he did a mile the first year then 10 miles the next year then an acu freshman named samantha bahl died at 19 bo committed to walking 26 miles or a marathon at the next relay for life that s 100 laps in the fifth lane he said i was a math teacher remember that effort in 2012 raised more than 2 000 so raising money by riding his bike was not so much of a stretch bo knows that bo didn t know cycling bo used to run but after matching hip replacement surgeries his doctor suggest some other activity bo tried golf but while that was fun he had matching rotator cuff surgeries he tried walking walking i could do he said but i didn t get very far so just over two years ago back when he was 77 he started bicycling i bought a real nice bike at a garage sale down the street he said he joined a group that rode and they encouraged him by telling him they wouldn t leave him behind bo knows a challenge i found out i really liked it and seemed to be pretty good at it he said before long they didn t have to wait for me the math guy logged every ride date distance time miles per hour he says he averages more than 13 mph he did the the 100 kilometer ride recently at the tour de gap and averaged 14 5 mph at the last steam n wheels he logged an impressive 16 mph average i m not fast he said bo and becky do activity classes at hendrick health club twice a week and he rides tuesdays thursday and saturdays he was ready for his 80 at 80 challenge the crash then his wheel lost traction on wet loose gravel and he went down a few blocks from home after an 18 mile afternoon ride some fellas stopped to help and they lifted him to his feet bo determined he could use the bike as a crutch and walk home he could not he broke the femur near the site of his right side replacement surgery that was a good thing surgery took 45 minutes he was rewired to enhance healing recovery will take much longer eight to 12 weeks so long he won t ride again until it cools off so his fund raising ride will have to wait some of have suggested he not get back on his bike phooey to that he says unless he just can t do it he will ride again healing is cycling with an upward trend is his motto becky has suggested a recumbent bike which rides low to the ground and doesn t easily tip over phooey to that he scoffs at a friend who rides an ebike one that can be battery powered when the going gets tough when the going gets tough bo knows how to get going this is a guy who with his wife has hiked 14 of the 18 peaks in colorado that are more than 14 000 feet he did the tallest mount elbert 14 439 feet with family during the pandemic i thought that if i ever was going to do it i should do it he said it was an itch to scratch he said they don t mountaineer but follow trails still the last trek up and down took 11 hours and that s in altitude and with a backpack for an abilenian who lives at 1 719 feet above sea level fortunately i scratched that itch he said hiking and cycling were perfect prescriptions for a pandemic you go bo going back to his logbook bo knows how far he has cycled try 4 170 miles in just over two years but that s on pause now he has been using a walker then it will be a crutches getting back on his bike it s 50 50 the math man said i plan on doing it it depends how well i recover he said he paused health often declines for older folks after an injury limits mobility i m not about to let that happen he said bo knows that posted by sharla at sunday september 26 2021 no comments move in round 2 austin the week we moved avalie to acu on tuesday was also the same week melaina started her junior year on wednesday and livian moved into her new apartment in austin on saturday talk about a stressful week tuell had driven back to abilene wednesday for bo s surgery so he came home friday night too late to pack anything into the car for the drive down to austin he got up early saturday to start packing but it took him a while to make sure everything was secure enough for the drive down we ended up not leaving for austin until 11 a m or so putting us several hours behind schedule we stopped for some lunch at fazoli s in waco and livian had to bring beanie into the restaurant because it was too hot outside to leave her in the car she s such a good kitty she didn t even make a peep or try to bolt and in the car she just slept the entire way jennifer and her parents volunteered to go earlier saturday morning and coordinate with the movers that we hired to move all their stuff out of the storage facility and into their apartment money well spent since jennifer got there before we did she was able to get into the apartment using the electronic lock once the movers finished jennifer and her parents decided to go grab lunch and do some shopping for some reason she took both keys with her when they left when we arrived the electronic pad for the door wouldn t work and since jennifer didn t leave us a key anywhere we were stuck outside did i mention it was a very hot august day in texas after debating going to find jennifer to get the key we decided instead to just start moving stuff up until she got there it just so happened that a maintenance guy showed up soon to check something in their apartment and he let us in yay once the parks arrived jay helped bring up some of the heavy stuff the girls are on the third floor so we got lots of steps in that day while most of the girls things had been in the storage facility we did bring down two end tables that livian had refinished and we also had found a really nice pub table leather chairs on craigslist that was only about 6 months old and looked brand new once everything was in the apartment we all began rearranging furniture and unpacking stuff the kitchen was super crowded so i moved some of the rubber bins with livian s food in them up onto the counters and stovetop because there isn t much counter space to get them out of the floor somehow when i moved one of the boxes up the stove got turned on a few minutes later jennifer yells something about smoke we ran into the kitchen to see smoke billowing from the stovetop and a nasty plastic smell radiating from the bin tuell quickly moved the bin and turned off the stove and we spent the next 15 minutes opening all the windows and fanning out as much of the smoke as we could the heat had melted all the way through the bottom of the bin bursting one of the dr pepper bottles at the bottom there were bits of blue plastic on her half cooked potatoes but most of her food was salvageable i can t explain how stupid i felt i know not to put anything on the stove but i did it anyway ugh we left it alone for a couple hours and later that afternoon once it had completely cooled i was able to scrape away all the plastic until it was a good as new but i made quite a mess and i m sure they were not happy to have their new to them apartment smelling like burnt plastic poor beanie was so confused that whole day livian had to keep her in her closet to try and keep her calm and beanie just crawled deep into a big blanket and didn t move most of the day she was pretty freaked out but livian reported that once we all left and it was quiet beanie came out to explore and then was fine she even enjoys getting to go out on their balcony and playing with the bugs we got livian s room semi put together but we started running out of time we had left melaina home by herself and we had told her to expect us around 9 30 uh no it was probably around 8 p m when we finally went to find some dinner several restaurants were closed because of covid so it took us a while to find a place to eat we ended up at the cane s on ut s main drag so it was super crowded with college kids which was very entertaining after dinner we dropped livian off at her apartment and left for home around 10 p m just a tad later t...
