discovering yourself in biblical stories author ralph milton and illustrations by richard caemmerer jr publisher wood lake books inc softcover 192 pages reviewed by rev garth wehrfritz hanson the author ralph milton at the time of this publication is the author of nine books editor of the popular e zine rumors which uses liberal doses of humor and story to communicate lively faith a former news broadcaster open line host and church administrator he is the co founder of wood lake books and lives in kelowna bc he has been described as canada s robert fulghum content this volume contains about this book first you fall in love a new way to enjoy the bible 23 chapters focussing on significant biblical persons and a study guide brief observations in about this book milton explains that there are four sections in each of the 23 stories 1 a few words of introduction 2 a paraphrase of the story in the bible 3 an explanation of why milton wrote the story and 4 ralph s own story about the biblical person in first you fall in love a new way to enjoy the bible milton provides some history and interpretation of the bible milton is critical of both mainline and fundamentalist attitudes concerning the bible he laments that many mainline congregations do not have bible studies and that people have bibles but rarely read them echoing the priesthood of all believers tradition milton is strongly opposed to the clergy having a monopoly as it were on the bible employing the example of how people view a rainbow he distinguishes between rational irrational and nonrational rational viewing involves a scientific explanation nonrational viewing emphasizes its beauty magnificence and how it inspires viewers irrational viewing looks for a pot of gold on the end of a rainbow the author advocates a combination of the rational and nonrational milton compares a couple falling in love with biblical people in the same way we need to fall in love with some of the people of the bible before we can even begin to study it meaningfully p 24 the more interesting section of this introductory chapter for yours truly has the heading the aggadah herein milton focuses on the jewish midrashic tradition he cites a description of aggadah from the encyclopedia judaica basically aggadah is jewish creative storytelling which attempts to interpret the bible aggadah includes a variety of genres myths legends folk tales humor dreams parables and so on according to milton jesus himself was i think a master of aggadah p 27 turning to significant people in the bible here are two brief examples one from the hebrew bible and one from the new testament in milton s chapter entitled hagar who survived a sentence of death he mentions in his introduction that there is a legend that both of them i e hagar and ishmael are buried in the sacred kaaba in mecca p 53 milton tells readers in his section why i wrote this story that he felt guilty he had written a children s book called living god s way in which he had left out the story of hagar and ishmael the title of milton s story is the same as this volume s title is this your idea of a good time god which he has hagar asking god when she and ishmael are sent out into the desert and feeling desperate thinking she and ishmael are going to die in milton s story desperation is transformed by divine intervention and a hopeful future it is interesting that of the 23 chapters in this volume only 7 of them focus on new testament people four women and actually only two men there are two chapters on peter and one on pontius pilate in his introduction to the second chapter entitled peter a saint in training based on acts 3 1 10 milton describes peter as physically strong and emotionally volatile and he suffered a bad case of foot in mouth disease he would speak first and think second p 181 in milton s first chapter on peter called simon peter simon gets a new job based on luke 5 1 11 he tells readers why i wrote this story when he was in israel he met a big man fishing for a living on the sea of galilee he left poland and now lived in the en gev kibbutz and was jewish he had memorized all four gospels in hebrew polish and english and was an acknowledged expert on that subject this man cared passionately and deeply about the ecology of the galilee and about the future of his country p 158 in this chapter milton titles his story come and help me fish for people after jesus tells simon where to fish and the catch is so plentiful milton has simon peter say to jesus look jesus bar joseph you shouldn t be hanging around here with the likes of me i m a working man my language gets a little rough sometimes can t keep up with all that religion stuff at the temple p 160 in milton s study guide finding new friends in the bible he makes several helpful suggestions how to lead and study the bible and this volume for example under the title other ways to use this book he includes six suggestions this volume is quite accessible and engaging the weakest sections in this reviewer s opinion were his paraphrases of the biblical texts for more interesting paraphrases i would recommend eugene peterson s the message both laity and clergy will benefit from this volume and maybe even fall in love with persons in the bible and be inspired to write their stories filed under church universal reviews tagged with biblical
