garth wehrfritz hanson a new name names our names are important they carry a lot of baggage your names may have quite a long history in your family in addition to last names in some families the same fist name or second name can be passed down for a number of generations last names also are associated with interesting traditions some people in the past and perhaps some even today were given their last name because of their work for example there are last names like baker farmer and taylor in some indigenous traditions babies might be named after the first thing their parents saw when they were born for example flying eagle or running deer in scandinavian traditions last names can refer either to a place for example bergstad or the first name of a grandparent or parent for example son of hans becomes hanson names many years ago in the earlier days of my ministry a dear lady suggested i would be a more effective pastor if my last name was changed to something shorter and easier to pronounce as i recall she never did suggest another name needless to say i never changed it i must confess that i have used my first name when making a reservation at a restaurant israel would be called by a new in quality name god given what better name can any believer wear than christian it tells immediately to whom we belong and who we are in this world 1 right around the time the people of jerusalem and judah returned from their babylonian exile they found zion the city of jerusalem in ruins many folks at that time both god s chosen people as well as their enemies believed that god had left the people of judah and jerusalem desolate and that they were a forsaken people however into this situation god sends his prophet to speak a word of restoration and hope god tells his chosen people through the words of his prophet you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the lord will give you shall no more be termed forsaken and your land shall no more be termed desolate but you shall be called my delight is in her and your land married for the lord delights in you and your land shall be married in biblical times names were very important names often revealed the nature or function of god and of human beings for example the name immanuel means god is with us god gave new names to several of israel s heroes at least two of jesus apostles also had new names god changed the name of abram to abraham and sarai to sarah along with their new names god made a covenant with them and called them for a new purpose they were to leave their homeland and travel to a land that god would show them god would promise them and their offspring a new land in which to live moreover through the covenant with abraham and sarah all nations all families around the world would receive a blessing so the name change to abraham and sarah was very important because it revealed to all people that god was working through this couple to pass on his love and acceptance of all people god also changed the name of jacob to israel after he had endured in a wrestling match with god all night through that wrestling match jacob now israel was given a new purpose for his life he was destined by god to become the patriarch of twelve israelite tribes he and his family would also prosper to remind them that god through his covenant had indeed made their land a land of promise moreover one of his offspring joseph would be destined to become pharaoh s right hand man and lead egypt as well as his own family through a period of drought in the new testament jesus calls two of his disciples and gives them a new name simon would no longer make a living fishing in the sea of galilee his name was changed to peter and even though at times his faith was rocky eventually he was blessed with leadership gifts to become a rock for other christians as he travelled around and preached the gospel the jewish pharisee saul who passionately carried out a campaign to persecute and put an end to the christian movement met up with jesus while travelling to damascus jesus revealed himself to saul and his name was changed to the apostle paul he would be an apostle specifically called to serve the gentile world and establish christian congregations there some of you may also have experienced a name change i have as a single person my last name was hanson when i married my wife julianna we both as a symbol of our married life together agreed to take each other s last name so when i married julianna i also married her last name and our new last name became wehrfritz hanson along with our new name came a change in our life we became a clergy couple that designation as a clergy couple is a name that also carries with it some baggage and fulfills god s purposes in ways that can be both unique and similar to others in the church like many biblical people whom god blessed when their names were changed god has also blessed us as we have lived and continue to live with our wehrfritz hanson name in today s passage from isaiah god gives the people of judah and jerusalem a new name and along with it a new purpose their lives were no longer destined to live and die as foreigners in babylonian exile they were not seen as or called by the name forsaken now the lord gives them the new name of my delight is in her moreover god renews and restores the covenant with his chosen people by changing the name of their land from desolate to married the land is married to both god and god s chosen people and god goes on to tell them that his relationship with them through the covenant is like a marriage relationship god is their bridegroom and they are god s bride just as in real life a bride and groom delight in each other so it is with god the groom who delights in his bride of jerusalem and judah even though the people of jerusalem and judah had been unfaithful to god the bridegroom by violating the covenant in many and various ways by turning their backs on god and worshipping and serving other false gods god takes his chosen people back by renewing his covenant with them and delighting in them god opens the future up to them by offering them to serve him in the process of restoring their city and country and in so doing restoring a hopeful future for them and the whole world so too god changes our name gives us a new name through our baptism into christ we are called more than the names our parents give us more than the new names we may adopt when we get married we are called precious children of god beloved daughters and sons christians servants and students of jesus our messiah although we like the jewish people have violated god s covenant and turned to other gods on numerous occasions god remains faithful god remains steadfast in his love for us god constantly forgives us and gives us new chances to journey in faith with him to grow and to change to serve him by serving others especially those who feel that they are forsaken and live in desolate places whether their forsakenness and desolation is being a failure being rejected broken relationships sickness and disease being enslaved to some kind of addiction or a host of other factors god calls us to journey with them that they too would be loved enough to believe and know that they are the precious children of god beloved daughters and sons christians servants and students of jesus our messiah in giving them and us these new names god renews his covenant with us over and over again giving us the opportunity to make changes in our life to grow in our faith and to walk with god in the process of restoration new life and a new hope filled future for that thanks be to god 1 emphasis a preaching journal for the parish pastor vol 24 no 5 january february 1995 lima oh
