wehrfritz hanson misplaced trust and trust in the lord the heart of the matter curse and blessing black and white darkness and light day and night bad and good right and wrong foolish and wise these are some of the comparisons and contrasts found in a certain type of literature biblical scholars call wisdom literature wisdom literature is found in the book of proverbs ecclesiastes some of the psalms and passages in other books of the bible like our passage from jeremiah today before we focus more closely on our first lesson i want to emphasise a couple things first of all our passage is best read and interpreted in light of the larger context of chapter 17 earlier in chapter 17 jeremiah speaks a warning to the people of judah and jerusalem he tells them that god was not pleased with their worshipping of other false gods he also states that their wealth and treasure will be given to their enemies and their enemies will take them into exile because god was angry with them for their unfaithfulness after our passage today jeremiah warns that all who gain their wealth unjustly shall be proven to be foolish all who have forsaken god shall be put to shame he goes on to pray that god would put to shame those who persecute jeremiah he also warns the people that if they choose not to keep the sabbath day holy then jerusalem shall be destroyed so with this context the prophet speaks the words of today s first lesson secondly as you may recall from some of my other sermons i sometimes like to do a comparison of different translations or paraphrases of a passage i believe that by comparing different translations or paraphrases we sometimes gain new insights into a passage so with that in mind here we go jeremiah starts off in verse 5 with a curse the nrsv translates it like this thus says the lord cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength whose hearts turn away from the lord in somewhat more colourful language and referring to the cursed in the singular rather than the plural the message puts it like this cursed is the strong one who depends on mere humans who thinks he can make it on muscle alone and sets god aside as dead weight both of these renderings of verse 5 emphasise a curse on those who prefer a misplaced trust in humans instead of trusting in the lord i ll say more about that later now we ll turn to verse 6 wherein jeremiah employs interesting images of the consequences of misplaced trust in humans in both the message and the reb such people are described in the singular whereas in the nrsv and the cev they are described in the plural the message states it like this he s like a tumbleweed on the prairie out of touch with the good earth he lives rootless and aimless in a land where nothing grows the reb translates it like this he she will be like a juniper in the steppeland or one who is a destitute person when good comes he she is unaware of it he she will live among the rocks in the wilderness in a salt uninhabited land the cev renders it like this they will dry up like a bush in salty desert soil where nothing can grow the tumbleweed on the prairie reminds me of where i grew up in south west saskatchewan the wind would blow russian thistles around they would go in any and every direction they were rootless and aimless according the the reb a destitute person fails to recognise or appreciate when their life benefits from goodness it s as if they were blind to all of the goodness given to them the image of rocks in the wilderness and salty uninhabited land reminds us that little or nothing can grow in such places what jeremiah describes here in verses 5 and 6 about misplaced trust in humans and the consequences rings true to real life for example lets look at history in biblical times the israelites you remember were not satisfied with god as their king they wanted to be like every other country around them who had an earthly king god through the prophet samuel warned them that there would be negative consequences to turning away from god as their king unfortunately the israelites insisted on having an earthly king what happened well in most cases the israelites were not blessed they were worse off than if they had remained faithful to god as their king their kings often not listening to god s wisdom and counsel chose to rely on military might and political alliances with other nations instead of god this resulted in the fall of both the northern kingdom of israel and the southern kingdom of judah looking at other nations in history a similar thing happened the roman emperor thought he was divine however eventually he died and the empire also fell apart as did the british empire the nazi regime under hitler and the russian regime under stalin moreover misplacing trust in such human leaders led millions of people into much suffering injustice evil and death what will be the outcome of countries today where people have a misplaced trust in their political leaders sadly i think the poorest and most vulnerable people will suffer even more under such leaders because there will be more injustices for example we see that happening when governments cut their spending on public healthcare and education the poor and vulnerable consequently suffer more in short because human beings are sinful and imperfect there never has been and there never will be a perfect lasting utopian society based on the misplaced trust of human beings coming back to our text jeremiah goes on in verses 7 8 to contrast and compare those who are cursed with those who are blessed once again the message and the reb render these verses in the singular and the nrsv and the cev are in the plural the message goes like this but blessed is the man who trusts me god the woman who sticks with god the reb translates it like this blessed is anyone who trusts in the lord and rests his her confidence on him the nrsv renders it like this blessed are those who trust in the lord whose trust is the lord the cev goes like this but i will bless those who trust me the lord notice that only in the cev is the blessing in the future i will bless whereas in all three of the other renderings it is in the present then in verse 8 jeremiah again employs interesting images to describe the consequence of god s blessing here only the reb is in the singular in reference to people the other three are plural however notice that the nrsv and the reb are in the singular in reference to a tree whereas the cev and the message are in the plural referring to trees here s the nrsv they shall be like a tree planted by water sending out its roots by the stream it shall not fear when heat comes and its leaves shall stay green in the year of drought it is not anxious and it does not cease to bear fruit the reb translates it like this he she will be like a tree planted by the waterside that sends out its roots along a stream when the heat comes it has nothing to fear its foliage stays green without care in a year of drought it does not fail to bear fruit only the message refers to the people in the present all three of the others refer to them in the future the message puts it like this they re like trees replanted in eden putting down roots near the rivers never a worry through the hottest of summers never dropping a leaf serene and calm through droughts bearing fresh fruit every season in referring to trees replanted in eden this rendering perhaps alludes to the perfect restored state of being of all creation including human beings who trust in god notice in jeremiah s description here that there will be heat and drought in a similar way we human beings will have to endure our versions of heat and drought i e injustice evil illness natural disasters and wars and more life in this world involves sufferings of various kinds we cannot avoid them yet like jeremiah s tree or trees if we place our trust in god and rely upon god we will be able to endure just like the tree or trees that rely on their rootedness and water supply that reminds me of the time back in world war ii when allied forces searched farms and houses looking for snipers at one abandoned house almost a heap of rubble searchers with flashlights found their way to the basement there on the crumbling wall a victim of the holocaust had scratched a star of david and beneath it in rough lettering this message i believe in the sun even when it is not shining i believe in love even when i do not feel it i believe in god even when he is silent trust in god even in especially in worst case scenarios in verses 9 10 jeremiah gets to the ultimate heart of the matter here i like the message rendering the heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful a puzzle that no one can figure out but i god search the heart and examine the mind i get to the heart of the human i get to the root of things i treat them as they really are not as they pretend to be this rendering reminds us that we cannot avoid escape from or fool god we cannot hide anything from god god knows the thoughts of our minds and the emotions of our hearts god knows what motivates us for the ancient israelites the heart symbolized the seat of our ultimate thoughts and emotions our beliefs motives thoughts and actions are rooted in trusting in and loving god with all of our heart soul mind and strength so to trust in god is at the heart of the matter for all of us therefore in closing let us bow in prayer as we pray the words of handt hanson s hymn 512 in evangelical lutheran book of worship lord let my heart be good soil open to the seed of your word lord let my heart be good soil where love can grow and peace is understood when my heart is hard break the stone away when my heart is cold warm it with the day when my heart is lost lead me on your way lord let my heart lord let my heart lord let my heart be good soil amen filed under church universal sermons tagged with
