access status open access more than money leveraging the benefits of sport hosting in niagara niagara community observatory brock university 2018 02 chris charlebois and julie stevens show more the niagara region has a long standing history of hosting sport events including the 2017 scotties tournament of hearts national women s curling championship the rowing and canoe kayak competitions at the 2015 pan am parapan am games the 2016 u18 women s world hockey championship the 2012 fina open water swim championships the 1995 ontario winter games and the annual royal canadian henley regatta while many of these events were successful and generated some positive effect whether monetary or other regional and municipal governments have lacked an ability to track the collective impact of their support either directly to the event hosts or to the organizations that aid in supporting sport tourism acknowledging that many event rights holders such as hockey canada or curling canada require financial guarantees including ticket sales facility costs or direct investments municipal and regional leaders must find ways to justify the support for an event and demonstrate to taxpayers that the public funds were spent in a responsible manner hence the purpose of this policy brief is twofold first to examine the impact of sport events in niagara and generate strategies for future sport event hosting in the region and second to begin a discussion on identifying a methodology to evaluate the impact of sport events in niagara without a defined regional municipal sport tourism strategy and framework to measure sport event outcomes councillors are often left to make decisions based on information presented by the event rights holders themselves this inevitably creates the potential for biased economic impact reports participation rates and other selling features show more loading item type item access status open access measuring culture in niagara a case for its role in the economy and community niagara community observatory brock university 2019 07 charles conteh and carol phillips show more in july 2013 the niagara region s integrated community planning committee received a consultant s report on the economic assessment of the culture sector in niagara the objectives of the project had been to assess the culture sector s impact on the local economy measure and promote its economic vitality encourage its growth to support economic prosperity and develop a user friendly framework to update and track data in the coming years as well as help groups within the sector the sector fte generating 396 3 million in labour income and a gross regional product of 595 2 million this policy brief seeks to update the research from the 2013 consultants report on the impact of the culture sector in niagara do the numbers still hold up how have they changed this information can then be used to build a case for or against establishing the local culture sector as an important stronghold in an economic development strategy due to its importance not only in employment numbers but also in how it contributes to the ever important tourism industry and to the overall economy in the future of niagara s health using a life course approach to improve well being niagara community observatory brock university 2018 03 01 sinéad mcelhone and diane vanecko show more the resilience and prosperity of a region fundamentally rests on the health and well being of its residents a region can boast having state of the art physical and digital infrastructure the blessings of geography and the most talented workforce yet suffer socioeconomic stagnation fully leveraging the potential of these assets presupposes that its residents are healthy motivated and engaged health and wellness are central to the quality and productivity of our lives and ultimately our happiness and fulfilment in a similar vein our health is a function of the circumstances surrounding our birth growth and aging and ultimately determines our capacity to learn live and work over a period of 18 months staff at niagara region public health collected and analyzed more than 49 000 lines of data from sources that kept track of ambulance trips and emergency room visits illnesses and injuries and the main causes of death by age group the goal is to use these numbers to answer one overriding question what are the biggest health problems in niagara these data should then help to identify specific times across the lifespan at which targeted interventions are most likely to have an impact once this has been determined decision makers can use the information to investigate whether current policies programs and services align with these issues at the appropriate time and location this policy brief is an attempt to enrich public discourse and advance novel approaches to designing and implementing niagara s public health policy agenda the discussion embraces a holistic life course perspective that is strategic in its orientation and comprehensive in its scope with respect to the planning delivery and monitoring of health care this promotion of wellness prevention of illness early identification of problems and equitable access to services would require an integrated regional platform the analytical lens of this life course perspective serves to chal lenge niagara s institutional infrastructure to consider more synchronized and targeted approaches to addressing some of the perennial problems of public health in the region health and wellness is one of those cross sectoral and transgenerational wicked problems that defy the depart mental silos of conventional public policy platforms show more loading item type item access status open access youth in niagara highly skilled highly mobile niagara community observatory brock university 2018 05 01 jeff boggs adam durrant and thalia semplonius show more the purpose of this report is to build on the research identified in the
