brown this is for the best of course but don t get too excited brown is far from his governor moonbeam days he doesn t even support a california single payer law boxer punches out fiorina yay barbara she s a fighter even she s only 4 5 feet tall one of the most progressive members of the senate new lieutenant gov gavin newsom the charasmatic mayor of sf has gotten a promotion he s now the 2nd in command of the state overall i like his politics but i hope he takes his job seriously he obviously ran for this as a stepping stone b c he wants to be governor or maybe even president but the l gov in california is a really important job some say the l gov in cali is more powerful than the gov there were more qualified dems for the job but he should definitely be better than the republican he is replacing jerry mcnerdy is down by 15 votes against david harmful with 98 reporting we ll probably have to wait weeks for this one to be finalized i actually spent all weekend volunteering for this race and i m glad i did if only i went for another day i might have turned out 3 more voters the uaw folks who asked us to go there sure knew what they were talking about my friend and neighbor dave stoop dog heller got 3 314 votes in his green party run for the us congress good job dave can we please take the giant banner sign off my window now the propositions there are some game changers in here prop 19 legalize and tax marijuana in california might have been a big change in some ways but failed by a considerable margin prop 20 end gerrymandering opposed by both political parties but supported by ordinary californians voting districts will now be chosen by a non partisan commission this got very little attention i don t know why because the game has now changed here how fair will the commission really be though my biggest question is why do we need a commission why not just do it geometrically prop 21 my car now costs 18 more per year to drive but i can now go to any state park for free wait have i ever paid to get into a state park before i thought they were mostly free already prop 22 the state can t steal money from local government to prop up the state this will make it harder to balance the state budget prop 23 abolish california pollution controls failed this one got lots of attention prop 24 repeal arnold s corporate tax cuts failed prop 25 end 2 3 majority requirement to pass a budget passed this is another game changer but it is mitigated by the results of 22 24 and 26 why would people vote to change this but simultaneously make it harder to balance a budget 3 other ways well we will see how easy it will be to get the budget passed next year still an over all win i think prop 26 new fees must have a 2 3 majority to pass prop 27 opposite let s see a month ago i went to san diego and tj that was fantastic love the weather i got a zeo really excited about it collecting baseline monophasic data now also finally closing on my latest property this one is a triplex in oakland i think it s going to be an even better cash cow than the other two but the time it takes to get the loans done to buy these places is ridiculous i ve been comedy tonight posted on august 13 2009 8 comments vacation over what a wonder time we had nana has been going to stratford for the shakespeare festival every year since the 3 rd year that it was running and this time i got to tag along before every show someone would ask her to explain what we were about to see and she would oblige this was definitely the year of the comedy i saw 3 comedies 1 tragedy and 1 history the comedies were by far the best shows all 3 were fantastic hilarious and elaborately staged most of the shows we saw had huge casts with the exception of the importance of being ernest i have to say that i am surprised at my reaction to the shows i was somewhat disappointed that i was going all the way to the shakespeare fest to see 5 shows with only 2 of them from the bard himself and then it was the non shakespearean comedies that well stole the show julius caesar was good but wouldn t knock your socks off everyone was solid but no one amazing the costuming was kind of weird and distracting especially in the 2 nd half this was my first julius caesar and i m really glad i finally got to see it on stage it helped me understand the play better especially cassius he was one dimensional to me before i saw him truly wrecked and defeated by portia s death macbeth was awful i m sure glad that i saw such a fantastic macbeth earlier this year right here in berkeley so i can keep it in my memory to replace that mess they are making of it in canada how can so many talented actors add up to such a pitifully presented performance if the interaction between just lord and lady macbeth had been bad i might have blamed the actors but since no one up on stage seemed to be on speaking terms i ll have to blame the director the booms and bangs were cool nice excuse for some pyrotechnics is all the good i can say about it earnest and forum were hilarious so many more cultural references i finally understand forum was almost acrobatic the soldiers eunuchs proteans kept falling into the orchestra pit and the ladies of the house of lycus did some of the sexiest dancing you ll see anywhere and didn t wear much more clothing than you ll see at a modern club bartholomew fair was really interesting at risk of sounding arrogant though and insulting to the wonderful group of people i was with i fear it was wasted on the audience who was there to see it almost everyone was over 60 i m not just talking about what you expect to see at a cultural experience like this there were no young people there i might have been the youngest person there and the paterson was packed for this show i saw a fair number of teens and college kids with their parents at all the other shows but not at this one the problem with this show is that you need to be able to understand 17 th century english and you need young ears to do it with everyone spoke very quickly in fairly obscure to us language not to mention that it had a huge cast the staging was wonderful though and a fair amount of slapstick so i m sure most people enjoyed themselves it was a very visual production everyone had distinctive costumes and names so it wasn t difficult to keep the many characters straight did you know that the fair on which the play was based ran every year outside of london for over 700 years it was finally abolished by the uptight elizabethan victorian government in 1855 apparently because of the kind of debauchery depicted in the play but isn t that amazing can any festival of that caliber claim to have had such a run the olympics can t hold a candle to that kind of history london bring back bartholomew fair come on brits you are probably responsible for giving birth to the modern county fair known all across the western world reclaim your birthright i almost forgot to mention the food that we ate only the top of the line for us my favorite restaurant was keystone alley the picture depicts my duck breast in a cherry port reduction sauce i also had a glass er better make that 2 of a local gamay noir which i liked very much nana and i had a wonderful time together the two of us usually interact with the rest of the family around so i m sure more than a few of you expected us to be at each others throats once we were finally stuck together for a whole week but not so we got on fabulously and i m sure we always will 8 comments posted in friends
