february we had a stand in the billy b asking you tell us how you feel this valentine s day you could write a note to us to tell us about something we re doing that you love or if you would like us to make some changes we loved hearing from everyone and got some great feedback from the people we spoke to with both things you really like and things you want us to improve we ve gone through all the feedback and just wanted to share a brief update with where we re up to with addressing some of the improvements you said mobile shelving on level 1 is tricky to use instructions are unclear easier instructions not through a qr link physical on the scary journal shelves we did we spoke to some students a few weeks after the valentine s day feedback to ask them to follow the instructions for our mobile shelving and talk us through any details that were unclear or confusing or any other issues they experienced thanks to those who took the time to help us with this from that we ve reviewed some of the signage we have in that area to help make the different sections clearer to identify and will be changing the written instructions displayed in that area based on suggestions from the students we spoke to we ll be asking more of you to help us and provide feedback on the new instructions and signage in the next few weeks to make sure we ve made the right improvements you said it might also be nice to have some boardgames in the snug more books about learning skills like chess we did we ll be putting additional boardgames into the snug including chess and will be adding titles to our wellbeing and leisure reading collections to supplement these games you said somewhere to stretch on long study sessions we did in social media posts over the last few weeks we ve highlighted a few options that we re lucky enough to have around the billy b that are ideal for visiting to take a break and stretch those legs including our exhibition space in library square and the various areas did while we do currently have information labels about each piece of artwork available on our display we can understand how they could have been missed our department art team will be updating the display over the summer and information about each piece will be included you said maybe you could add coziness to some library areas we did we were already considering adding some artwork to walls in certain areas of the library so this comment helped us to look at specific areas we could consider and ask students to tell us what they d like to see on the walls the response has been rather varied we re looking into a few options to see what would work best for everyone watch this space in the pipeline reviewing furniture in our postgraduate room and looking at options to replace some items specifically desk chairs looking into adding more height adjustable desks in different areas of the library we re working with colleagues in estates and facilities to review maintenance and checks of our plug sockets please do let us know when you find one that isn t working some of the things you love we ve told you about some of the improvements you ve asked us to make but we can t finish without sharing just a few of the things you love too you gave me back my love for books you are always there for me whenever i come to you i find you always welcoming and opening your doors for me 5131 continue reading a post by customer services coordinator kate williamson and user experience officer kirsty barnfather at durham we re lucky to be part of the academic libraries north aln community and often join their sessions and workshops especially within the user experience ux community of practice cop that we are members of the aln ux cop allows groups of people from different institutions to get together usually virtually and discuss different user experience methodologies projects and chat about what each library is currently doing or planning for the future there are a variety of sessions from workshops to ux in one hour presentations allowing members to expand their knowledge and encourage others to try out new techniques in march we attended the define develop and deliver workshop ran by the ux cop the session explored the double diamond approach and allowed us to use practical ux techniques for data analysis ideation and prototyping armed with a stash of pens and paper we looked at a variety of methods some familiar and others completely new to us our highlights included the anti problem and google reviews as they were fun and different ways to approach an issue the anti problem asks you to think of a problem you would like to solve and then reverse it we looked at issues such as not being able to find a book on the shelves not borrowing books as carrying them home is difficult etc reversing these meant coming up with bad ideas that would cause the most disruption to the user covering the floor with spiders to make it impossible for people to get to the shelves was a personal highlight once you have your terrible idea you reverse it to come up with the most helpful solution that would create a positive user experience this can be as crazy as the spiders but the idea is that you will be able to take away elements of the solution to resolve the initial problem for example putting staff at the end of each row of shelving turned into the idea of a personal shopper service for book collection and issues navigating the online catalogue created a very individual and accessible online experience with a virtual assistant whilst all hypothetical a lot of ideas were discussed and it was interesting to hear the creative solutions to so many different issues faced in libraries page tables and google reviews were another fun way of looking at improving user experience for the page tables we used some of the solutions from the anti problem task and created a quick pitch for the product or service we designed a book butler personal shopper service and a helpful navigation tool called look for your book which is essentially a google maps style app to direct users to their chosen books on the shelves the google reviews then become useful as you evaluate your product or service with a 5 star review and a 1 star review this lets you look at your prototype from a user perspective and anticipate what issues might come up that you should address before implementation your imagination can run wild at this stage but considering so many different angles with a group of people really allows you to troubleshoot an idea to hopefully create a great solution to an existing problem we really enjoyed the workshop and came away with loads of new ideas for our ideation and prototyping stages of ux work we re looking continue reading what is a library without a celebration of its contents for the last few months book of the month has been revived and this time all the titles in the running are suggested by our students when we put the word out via instagram students will suggest their favourite titles to compete for the crown we ll then choose three of those suggestions that we have physical copies of and pit them against one another to keep the options balanced we ll usually try to include at least one fiction and one non fiction title in the running so everyone has an opportunity to vote for something that appeals to them in a second instagram vote students will then have 24 hours to pick their favourite of the three some of these competitions have been close as one of the people who can see the voting as it happens i somehow find myself checking the poll at least once every hour for example in february wild swans by jung chang won over fourth wing by rebecca yarros by only 3 of votes it may seem silly to some but as a librarian that s a nail biter once the victor is chosen a physical copy of the book is put at the help and information desk along with a little display with info on how to get e copies we are delighted when these books disappear from their displays and they often do after all we want them to be borrowed book of the month is an important reminder that though we are primarily an academic library we also want our students to read for pleasure needless to say there will always be a book on that specific branch of microeconomics for when you need to revise for your exam but more than that we have books for our students to enjoy outside of their academic fields some winners of book of the month include books on chinese culture shakespeare s life the hidden history of women in the middle ages etc etc there are more than just the contents of your chosen course behind the magical now automatic doors of the bill bryson library so why not take advantage of it and pick up that book on how to knit or the basics of ancient greek philosophy or re read sherlock holmes again again for those who prefer to swipe their pages not turn them we have our extensive e book collection on libby so there really an option for everyone before we know it life presents hardly any time for us to read and we all wish we d done more of it when we were younger book of the month reminds me that young people are taking advantage of that time that our collection is valued more than we sometimes realise and that people still love to read about dragons even whilst studying oriental museum s lantern festival by visitor freddie age 11 these are the five things i enjoyed the most 1 lantern festival gallery trail the trail led us from the bottom of the museum to the top we had to find little toy snakes in the displays and find out more information about the year of the snake freddie completed the lantern festival gallery trail 2 chinese snacks chinese snacks were served in one of the egyptian areas where you could pick two snacks of your choice and have a lychee juice i d not tried lychee juice before and i really liked it 3 calligraphy there was a whole room dedicated to doing calligraphy with real chinese ink and brushes there were lots of different chinese characters to try one had a step by step guide and others were harder there were two different types of paper we had lots of fun doing this freddie and his younger brother ezra loved the calligraphy activity 4 games there was a games room with people two teach two games go and majong i enjoyed learning them very much and we brought home our very own go game to keep practising 5 lion dance and dragon dance this was my favourite part in the lion dance two adults were dressed as a lion and they paraded around throwing lettuce which brings good luck drums were playing and it was really exciting straight after that was the dragon dance all the children got to have a go of holding and
