Text of the page (random words):
st but practically unwatchable painting i haven t spent time with worse characters since high school detention about as clunky as graffiti gets it lurches from letter to letter with no sense of style and has all the grace of a sprinter whose shoelaces have been tied together so awful it qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment the only quandary in this piece is in where to begin despising it appears to have been conceived and painted by a grade school dropout snorting airplane glue the piece contains not one surprise not one skill not one technique not one bit of interest for any graffiti fan over the age of ten mentally or physically like being run over by a garbage truck that backs up and dumps its load on top of you the piece is a botch but at least it ll make you feel good about your own daily drudgery consider this the graffiti equivalent of yellow snow a bad graffiti lover s heaven and a good graffiti lover s hell should be shot at sunrise or strung up by the neck from a tall tree or at least run out of glasgow by a big posse it s too bad duncan cumming doesn t have red glowing delete buttons on these web pages we could have done glasgow a favor complete and utter horseshit if you see this character in edinburgh run in the opposite direction and hide until we tell you it s safe to come out we still love you elph happens to the best of us but man what a stinky load someone get the hose this is a great piece to show to somebody you don t like it s a worthless bit of low grade graffiti that s as sophisticated and enjoyable as a pile of twigs the piece isn t exactly providing entertaining escape in fact the only escape on your mind is going to be the escape key on your computer the graffiti equivalent of a box of sugar puffs followed by a half gallon irn bru slap a restriction order on yourself and don t come within ten paces of this hideous concoction it s the look of someone crashing and burning in a heap of misguided grandiose intentions this poor piece is like an abandoned car without plates nobody wants to admit it s theirs looking at this piece is like someone shoving a wire brush down your esophagus then pulling it out your you know what mutant viral strain suffers from an old fashioned identity crisis the poor thing is awfully confused and so are we is it pop art that isn t pop enough or street art that isn t street enough or post graffiti that isn t post enough or is it really just a silly painting that isn t endearing enough don t have a clue but this much is certain it s definitely shite that isn t good enough you have no idea how much restraint i m using not to call it awkward oops lost the restraint the game referring to pacman is great fun the stencil ought to be taken out back and shot this really should have stayed in the sketchbook or better yet in the nearest skip there s just nothing even slightly likeable in the piece graffiti lovers are more likely to have fun banging their heads against a wall or cleaning rubbish on a motorway than they ll have looking at the crims this is hands down the worst stencil to ever see the light of day really my own little perspicacious critic in training laughed her head off note to self daughter lacks taste must try harder brilliant and astonishing those are two words that will not be used to describe this painting leave a comment may 11 2025 yardworks graffiti festival 2025 filed under graffiti duncan 6 07 pm tags art glasgow graffiti photography street art travel yardworks this may day weekend i was lucky to go to the yardworks graffiti festival in glasgow this has been going on since 2017 but i d never been before i used to live in glasgow and knew the organiser gaz mac an old school graffiti writer who s now the studio director of swg3 the venue it s hosted at i happened to bump into gaz in shoreditch last year got talking and thought i should really come up for that and i m glad i did i d already booked flights and accommodation then got a message from laura one of gaz s colleagues at swg3 inviting me to show some of my photos back in 2000 2005 when i was living in glasgow i had a website with a few thousand photos mainly from glasgow and edinburgh i started this before sites like facebook instagram flickr and even myspace existed and there weren t lots of other websites for sharing graffiti photos the oldest photos were all taken on film before i moved onto digital and it was the oldest film photos from 2000 2001 that were on display at yardworks there were about 80 of these photos projected from slides in the same space as some great photos of gable end murals by other photographers although the photos on show weren t particularly high quality being scans of my old grainy photos i think some people liked them particularly older graffiti writers from glasgow who knew the people and places pictured the photos were of pieces by writers including mak1 ejek akme squan sore kemo shoe real laps rogue one enos camone asone kool byse and others i had quite a few folk tell me how much they d appreciated my website back in the day which was nice apart from my own tiny personal involvement yardworks is a massive event full of graffiti a large outdoor space covered in graffiti lots of indoor space including a large hall full of stalls selling merchandise from artists several bars dj s a garden food trucks it s a massive undertaking of staff volunteers painters ladders scissor lifts and cherry pickers and it all went off smoothly the weather was great the whole weekend which really helped and meant it was nice just to sit outside or wander round checking all the graffiti being painted i met and spoke with loads of great folk including ohpandah vues rask ekto this1 tizer fraser gray smug writers filed under graffiti duncan 5 37 pm tags art graffiti photography street art i ve been photographing graffiti for years and one thing that always catches my eye and i appreciate is the little messages writers leave i m not talking about random messages scrawled on walls but those by graffiti writers alongside their pieces writers sometimes re tag their names which is useful for anything wildstyle which could be hard to decipher and identify who s responsible often they ll tag the names of their fellow writers crew friends and family but beyond tagging names there s another graffiti sub category where writers leave comments and witty aphorisms to accompany their artwork i like to call this graffiti wisdom more leave a comment november 16 2024 street art city filed under graffiti graffiti diaspora book review filed under books graffiti duncan 6 17 pm tags art graffiti street art urban art this book by andrea caputo is a masterpiece it was published in 2009 and i picked up a copy a few years ago although mine is dated 2011 firstly it s a behemoth it s about 35cm x 25cm x 3cm and weighs over 2kg so it s not the kind of book you re going to read on the train into work in the bath or in bed or take on holiday it s the kind of book you ll have to keep on the coffee table it s over 400 pages long i took a look at some of my other graffiti books and found only three that were longer but those were primarily books of photos unlike those this is packed full of text as well not just photos the problem with that is you need to dedicate a lot of time to read it not just to glance at now and again i have to confess i read some of it then it sat on the shelf for a long time before i resumed it in the end i gave up on completing it and just skimmed through the last quarter or so most graffiti books fall into one of three main categories a book of photos often by someone who s not a graffiti writer with small amounts of text introducing each chapter and explaining things like the difference between a throw up and a piece so clearly targeted at people who like nice photos of graffiti and street art but don t necessarily know that much about it text written by a social anthropologist or criminologist with a small amount of photos aimed at people who re more interested in the culture than art for art s sake a book by a writer showcasing all their own work this book is unlike any of those the text is almost entirely articles by the writers themselves recounting stories of their early graffiti writing in the 1980 s and 1990 s and the scrapes they got into so it s by writers for writers or anyone who s more involved and aware than the target market for a book of just photos of nice looking street art murals the design and layout is meant to be loosely in the style of a broadsheet newspaper as a collection of articles it s packed full of text photos illustrations maps it s printed on at least two different types of paper stock matt and glossy so top marks to the graphic designers responsible for the amount of work that s gone into this i don t think i ve ever seen this much attention to detail in any other graffiti book it s filled with photos from the writers and it s also got lots of brilliant illustrations depicting things like maps of train sidings and different types of rolling stock trains diaspora means the displacement of a people from their original homeland in this case the graffiti diaspora refers to the movement of graffiti culture from its prime location of new york into europe in the 1980s the writers are from all across europe but most heavily featured are italian unsurprisingly given the author s also italian uk writers including zaki dee mode2 coma drax elk don feature with their own tales of graffiti writing in london in the 1980 s my favourite article was probably the story of m a graffiti legend in genoa more up than anyone else in the city crossing out everyone else getting up in the most tricky places and writing insults and death threats to other writers nine different writers recount what they know about m turns out it was an old woman working on her own the book has a large m tagged across the page as if she s managed to invade the book publisher s to get her name in a few photos to give you a snapshot of what it s like in summary i think this is probably the most impressive book on graffiti i ve seen it s a huge amount of content it s telling great untold stories of the history of european graffiti it looks great possibly my all time favourite graffiti book a new version is published in august 2024 retitled all city writers an oral history in times of change with an additional 190 pages of content get it here leave a comment july 27 2024 football club stickers an appreciation filed under uncategorized duncan 7 23 pm tags football football clubs soccer sports stickers for a long time i photographed just graffiti and didn t bother photographing street art considering it different and treating it disdainfully then after seeing so much of it probably as it increased over time as well i started to photograph it but i didn t photograph stickers in particular or very much for the same sort of reasons and there s just too many of them then i relented and started photographing stickers as well but just some of them most stickers you see are from street artists or graffiti writers and those are what i photographed football club stickers are a distinct sub category that sits apart from other types of stickers with no obvious connection with street art stickers so for a long time i never bothered photographing them then i started to appreciate them for their creativity their humour their ubiquitousness in any city centre many just have the club s logo and colours but a lot are much more interesting with common references being things like ultras and casuals supporters clubs nostalgic cultural references from perhaps a time in the club s glorious past or reimagined media and products done with the club s names and logos and of course beer they tend to be in any city centre especially one which has major football teams the sort of place either where international matches might be played or just anywhere football fans on holiday like to put up their stickers here s a few of my favourites you can find more of my photos here and others photos here if you like these check
