2026 by paul w bennett the culture war has totally enveloped our universities and effectively undermined the foundation of the commons one place where open lively civic debate and intellectual exchanges across the battle lines were still possible a new university of regina press collection of essays with the ironic title knowledge under siege cobbled together by one of canada s most outspoken faculty of education radicals marc spooner may burn the remaining bridges the collection of nearly impenetrable academic articles conveys a sense of moral panic and sets out an improbable thesis the barbarians aroused by donald trump s war on woke campus culture are assembling and will soon be at the gates of canadian universities it s time to raise the draw bridge and defend the academy and especially the humanities and social sciences spooner and his allies on the radical left are out to ring an alarm about the imminent danger of an american spillover effect the cbc radio ideas series at its best gives voice to a range and variety of competing perspectives when it comes to the fight to save the intellectual vibrancy of our universities however the cbc current affairs division is complicit in aiding and abetting the radicals amply demonstrated in two recent programs on the same topic produced by nuhlah ayad for cbc ideas the most recent panel knowledge under siege organized by spooner and held march 25 as part of the toronto festival of authors tifa was one sided to the point of caricature cbc host ayed led off with a rather stark statement the threat to academic freedom comes straight from donald trump that set the stage for spooner s rambling ideologically driven introductory oration read into the record chapter and verse from the book stacked panel of grant recipients the politicization of the universities spooner proclaimed was drawn from an authoritarian playbook and spreading like a contagion and canada is not immune in marshalling his case he cited the federal conservative party s 2024 threat to defund university research it deemed as woke and the alberta government of danielle smith s 2026 legislation attempting to place the government as gatekeeper over research funding the tifa panel like an earlier may 2023 university of regina conference symposium was stacked with academics aligned politically with spooner and without exception scholars who have benefited from current university hiring promotion and research grant policies the co editor spooner sits on federal academic grant committees and the book itself secured a publishing grant from the humanities and social science research council fund university of toronto vice dean arts and sciences randy boyagnola former president of pen canada 2015 17 sees the threat as a fundamental part of the polycrisis affecting universities political scientist malinda s smith associate vice president research edi is the regular university affairs columnist who ardently defends equity diversity and inclusion policies and practices even the international panelist ucla political scientist davide panagia has been a beneficiary holding a canadia research chair position at trent university 2005 2015 before moving to california blinkered view of academe one of the hallmarks of true academic scholarship is to take account of a range of perspectives and to demonstrate fairness in assessing contending claims virtually every contributor to the university of regina press collection either ignores or brushes aside any research evidence or commentary cutting in a inexcusable in the cbc ideas version of the panel aired april 13 on cbc radio no one referenced the omission or acknowledged a different point of view oblivious to academic tradition and conventions the university of regina faculty of education co editors spooner and james mcninch and the cbc ideas series producers demonstrated a shocking disrespect for the foundations of liberal education what is knowledge and who gets to determine its boundaries was never even raised or debated just in passing spooner dismissed centuries of cultural tradition as nostalgia to revive diminished liberal values the book proves once again that it s easier to denounce than debate what is really imperiled in canada is the fundamental role of the university as a commons open to any and all forms of debate and dissent provided it stays within the boundaries of peaceful non violent exchange the word knowledge is in its title but this collection of essays seeks to preserve the existing order supported by federal granting agencies that abandons the pursuit of truth the advancement of knowledge and the intellectual freedom to challenge the prevailing radical left liberal orthodoxy political bias in education and the social sciences faculties of education mimic in extreme form the political biases that have overtaken the social sciences in universities in canada as well as the united states perfectly sensible and legitimate antipathy toward president trump and his army of hard core republican anti intellectuals has merely reinforced the existing biases the divide is sharper and the gulf has become a chasm it was most starkly revealed in a 2023 u s study produced by two rutgers university researchers nathan honeycutt and lee jussim from 1969 until 2022 the proportion of faculty in social sciences holding left liberal ideology has grown exponentially from 45 3 per cent to 74 2 per cent over that time faculty labelled middle of the road shrunk to 14 9 per cent and those classified as conservative far right dwindled to 10 8 per cent more recently honeycutt and jussim 2025 have demonstrated the connection between extreme bias and censorship or cancel culture on the left as well as the right of the political spectrum the big takeaway the middle ground required to sustain the university as commons is fast disappearing that explains in many ways the positive reception accorded the university of regina collection by cbc ideas and the puff piece review by university of windsor education dean ken montgomery published in university affairs the official organ of canadian higher education news trashing of viewpoint diversity three canadian policy studies published between 1999 and 2022 flagged the dramatic political shift to the centre left among professors at canada s universities by the late 1990s professors with a liberal political affiliation had already captured the humanities social sciences and education but conservatives were still solidly represented in the higher ranks and in business law and engineering commentators on the emerging trend back in 1999 claimed that the pattern reflected disciplinary specialization rather than ideological gatekeeping twenty five years on systemic exclusion of moderate and conservative oriented scholars is not only evident it s entrenched and supported by edi policy practice and activism while the evidence is clear there s no consensus on how it actually plays out on campuses explicitly conservative think tanks like the fraser institute crank out surveys claiming that today s university students are getting a one sided education and one third fear grade penalties for expressing their own views most likely to be labelled controversial a 2022 survey on viewpoint diversity on canadian university campuses produced by the macdonald laurier institute clearly hit a nerve its findings confirmed previous claims that freedom of speech on campus was threatened oddly enough by the very professors valorized in the book knowledge under siege conservative learning students and faculty reported high levels of self censorship in one sided classrooms that reinforced ideological conformity and limited the expression of dissent the virtual excommunication of university of toronto psychologist jordan peterson 2016 2021 and the 2017 silencing of wilfrid laurier university graduate student lindsay sheppard had a distinct chilling effect students faculty and even journalists went to ground to preserve their reputations the reflex response label ignore and exclude the rather incendiary knowledge under siege collection of essays may well be remembered as the last gasp of university professors fending off growing public calls for a return to a more open and genuinely diverse academy while seeking to preserve their entitlements if we are backsliding toward illiberal democracy this book will only add further grease to the skids one of spooner s key contributors malinda smith took to university affairs in october 2025 to decry the importation of think tank surveys adopting the terminology of viewpoint diversity first used in the united states while not disputing the actual data on the ideological imbalance smith trotted out a 2022 commentary by alex usher of higher education associates to trash the mli report for its research methodology it was a classic example of shooting the messenger ideological conformity is deeply entrenched and vigorously defended by tenured professors particularly at toronto s oise the university of regina and most of our education schools perceptions of constraint to use usher s term harden into exclusion and reverse discrimination when you dare to question the orthodoxy the latest book on the subject amply demonstrates that the commons is not only divided but being held captive by those privileged by the current research grant structure hiring quotas and insular university culture why are canadian academic gatekeepers under siege is the real threat to academic freedom an expanding authoritarian movement represented by an overflow from donald trump s america or a challenge to ideological conformity emanating from within the academy and embraced by the wider public what happens to those in the humanities and social sciences who dare to challenge the prevailing orthodoxy posted in
