asymmetric catalysis 2026 10 07 webb eleanor lusby paul lawrence andrew engineering and physical sciences research council epsrc show more metallo organic cages have proven to be proficient catalysts exhibiting excellent activity efficient turnover and notable selectivity despite significant advances in the field examples of asymmetric catalysis remain limited and reports of high enantioselectivity are rare coordination cages offer a unique platform for stereocontrol with the constrictive nature of the cavity lending itself to selective catalysis by promoting specific substrate orientations consequently stabilising competing transition states this work aims to address this gap in the field by developing metallo organic cages for asymmetric catalysis there are two key limitations currently hindering progress in the field i the slow case by case approach to catalyst discovery prioritising design and synthesis of metallo organic cages mocs followed by exploration of their catalytic activity and ii the limited number of assemblies investigated for applications in asymmetric catalysis this work aims to address these issues and accelerate progress in the field to address the time consuming low throughput method of current catalyst discovery a high throughput screening approach was developed this enabled the screening of 116 potential pd ii based assemblies for the nitro aldol reaction identifying five with measurable enantioselectivity this strategy led to the discovery of a highly unexpected pd l l cage which delivered an enantiomeric excess of up to 75 not only did this significantly accelerate the screening process but it also facilitated the elucidation of a catalytic assembly that would not typically have been explored additionally to increase the structural variety of mocs suitable for asymmetric catalysis chiral co iii assemblies were examined various strategies were assessed to adapt existing co l assemblies for catalytic applications by adjusting solubility and the coordination environment with counterion exchange showing the greatest improvements moreover previously underexplored charge neutral assemblies were investigated to assess their catalytic potential resulting in the successful synthesis of a novel charge neutral co l cage show more listelement badge dso type item mechanistic models of cancer evolution from initiation to metastasis formation the university of edinburgh 2026 10 07 brunet guasch meritxell antal tibor nicholson michael shneer vsevolod tomlinson ian show more mathematical models and in particular stochastic processes have a long history in population genetics dating back to the earliest discoveries of genes and evolution more recently the recognition of cancer as an evolutionary process has motivated the use of similar models to study the mechanisms underlying patterns observed in cancer genetic data this thesis explores birth death processes as mathematical models of cancer evolution these models are used both to develop theoretical insight into evolutionary dynamics and to analyse genetic and epidemiological data the thesis begins with a theoretical study of multi type critical birth death processes motivated by populations evolving at a limiting mutation rate we derive novel expressions for the survival probability and cell number distribution of a general multi type critical birth death process and discuss their biological interpretation and potential applications the next chapter focuses on colorectal cancer initiation with particular emphasis on mutations in the tumour suppressor gene apc a simple evolutionary model is used to guide the analysis of over 3 500 colorectal tumour genomes this analysis reveals a non trivial relationship between apc inactivation and cancer progression intermediate just right levels of inactivation maximise progression probability whereas both weaker and stronger inactivation are comparatively less tumourigenic by combining modelling and data we quantify the cancer progression probability associated with different apc inactivation levels across biological contexts including anatomical site co occurring mutations and mutational processes the final chapter studies metastasis the dissemination of cancer cells to distant tissues we propose a three type birth death model in which cancer cells must evolve metastatic competence before dissemination can occur the rate at which metastatic competence evolves characterises an important property of the founding cancer cell its baseline propensity to become metastatic we identify observable quantities that depend on this rate including metastasis diversity and the probability that metastases are detectable at diagnosis the modelling framework enables integration of phylogenetic and epidemiological data which together indicate that baseline metastatic capacity varies across cancer types show more listelement badge dso type item echoes of giambattista marino s poetics in nicolas poussin s oeuvre 2026 10 07 okuliar reine ullmann mccaffrey howarth caroline messina davide warwick genevieve edinburgh college of art university of edinburgh postgraduate research expenses pre grant show more during the second half of the seventeenth century nicolas poussin 1594 1665 was hailed as the french raphael at the académie royale de peinture et de sculpture despite a life and career spent in rome the construction of poussin s myth and its corollary national appropriation left little room for indebtedness to contemporary italian art poussin was deemed to have pioneered classicism by essentially drawing from antiquity unsurprisingly the potential role played in his art by a baroque neapolitan poet placed on the index as was giambattista marino 1569 1625 has only been sporadically considered by scholarship yet marino remains an unwavering presence in poussin s life since 1672 when giovanni pietro bellori 1613 1696 published poussin s earliest biography the poet was acknowledged as the discoverer of the young painter in paris in 1622 he was by the same token his first renowned patron when poussin arrived in rome in 1624 marino introduced him to the intellectual circles that would ensure his success why would poussin a struggling young artist spurn the chance to please his grand patron by directly engaging with his poetry did this engagement remain relevant throughout his career this thesis will analyse the echoes of marino s poetics in poussin s oeuvre after considering the artists historical and biographical contexts each chapter will focus on a key work or set of works by poussin this study will demonstrate that in addition to the ovidian nature of the artists outputs poussin and marino shared the same understanding of imitation and musicality in their compositions as he defined his art poussin declared that the aim of painting was delight délectation to marino the end of poetry was wonder meraviglia this thesis will argue that the central role of the beholder s pleasure resulted in the use by both artists of the witty conceit concetto ingegnoso since neither poussin nor marino left a theoretical treatise behind the definition of the witty conceit will be the one devised by emanuele tesauro 1592 1675 in il cannocchiale artistotelico 1654 a treatise on wit also considered a defence of marino s poetry in a letter sent to his friend and patron paul fréart de chantelou 1609 1694 in 1647 poussin famously asked him to read his painting the manna for marino poetry was seen by the mind s eye yet analysing poussin s use of marino s poetics and therefore the construction of his painting beyond the sole allegiance to the convention of ut pictura poesis allows us to reconsider the themes of his paintings by avoiding the strict categorisations and periodisation that have thus far separated the poet and the painter this comparative study authorises a wider view and re contextualisation of poussin s artworks the structural reading of poussin s painting that results from a close comparison with marino s poetry allows overall to reposition the artist s visual poetics in a dialogue with the literary culture of his time show more listelement badge dso type item mind the gap between data patterns and economic patterns essays on machine learning for finance the university of edinburgh management school and economics economics 2026 10 07 shi heqing dong yizhe chen zexun show more financial economic models were developed to interpret noisy market data often by imposing structure through assumptions and constraints statistical learning methods in contrast are built with a singular goal producing accurate predictions recent years have seen the rapid rise of modern learning architectures deep neural networks transformers diffusion models among others across fields ranging from physics to biomedicine and increasingly in finance their remarkable flexibility has led someone to view them as the models for everything prompting claims that traditional financial economic frameworks are becoming obsolete this thesis demonstrates that such claims are unfounded despite their expressive power and minimal structural assumptions statistical learning models are inherently data driven and thus prone to overfitting particularly when dealing with noisy financial datasets the very limitations of these models highlight the value of financial economic frameworks which are grounded in rigorous theory and offer both interpretability and robustness motivated by this complementarity the thesis develops new statistical learning models for finance that integrate economic structure including the economics aware gaussian processes eagp and the structured knowledge informed neural networks skinns these models inherit the flexibility of modern learning algorithms while incorporating economic principles that mitigate overfitting and enhance interpretability they deliver forecasts that are simultaneously data driven and economics aware with especially strong performance in illiquid and noisy market environments show more listelement badge dso type item fate of the compradors institutional adaptation and organisational capability a comparative study of comprador system changes in multinational corporations in china mid 19th to 20th century the university of edinburgh college of humanities and social science 2026 10 07 wan xian boecking felix kosmetatos paul economic history society show more while numerous studies have examined chinese compradors as key intermediaries for foreign enterprises in 19th century china their decline and eventual abolition in the 20th century remain underexplored in comparative perspective few works systematically investigate how foreign companies of different nationalities and industries adapted the comprador system amid china s institutional and socio economic upheavals during the early 20th century notably japanese firms are often seen as early abolishers of the system while british companies are viewed as more reluctant to abandon it what explains this divergence and what do these differing strategies reveal about broader patterns of institutional adaptation drawing on archival sources and secondary literature this study analyses five firms mitsui bussan kaisha yokohama specie bank jardine matheson co the hongkong and shanghai banking corporation and british american tobacco these cases encompass japanese british and british american enterprises operating in trading banking manufacturing distribution and procurement the thesis develops an institution capability environment ice framework to explain differences among firms branches and business functions institutions shaped the formal and informal rules under which foreign firms operated organisational capabilities determined whether companies could internalize or redistribute the functions performed by compradors and environmental pressures altered the costs and benefits of existing arrangements this framework transcends static interpretations of the comprador system and enables a more nuanced understanding of how firms navigate shifting regulatory and cultural contexts addressing a long standing methodological limitation in the literature the comparison shows that cultural distance and national business character cannot adequately explain divergent outcomes firms sought to reduce comprador dependence in order to protect profits and strengthen managerial control but abolition was possible only when credible alternatives could provide local knowledge trusted networks credit guarantees political mediation and access to property and markets the study therefore argues that abolition was not a discrete event but a contested and uneven process the study also contributes to the history of colonialism and decolonisation in china by showing that the end of foreign privilege was not a single legal event although the 1943 treaties abolished british and american extraterritoriality comprador mediated relationships survived wartime disruption and remained viable in parts of china until revolution and socialist transformation dismantled the semi colonial market structures on which they depended by embedding comprador studies within the framework of business history this research challenges anglo centric narratives and contributes to the historiography of institutional transformation and foreign firms adaptive strategies in modern china show more load more contact us the
