yesterday this child drew breath time s hairsbreadth they won t go back to cities east stay grind the flour and cast the yeast breadwinners square counties a road every mile the great plains now mosaic tile breadbasket wild once were texas longhorn we insist on being forlorn small breadbox august aster petals unfurl under downy blankets to curl tea shortbread to meet the bar in the pub tonight we look at the compound word verse at first this seemed too difficult but as i read it and some of my fellow poets this managed to come out i did write the couplets first and added the third lines later and also rearranged the stanzas a bit what do you think mtb compounding the stem dversepoets com share this share on x opens in new window x share on facebook opens in new window facebook was quite interesting and swept me along a bit lots of threads seemed to gather here no magritte but it does look like one is there any image that can possible avoid such treachery if we really want trouble we could say ceci n est pas un poeme but isn t that a similar treachery exposed on sidewalk cafes late at night are images of imagination any less treacherous or does the lack of resemblance to any thing allow it to begin in innocence no word here is an image yet why not is there any actual ontological distinction between poem and painting some poets have said or rather writ that there is something painters have an easier time portraying than poets this is not philology these are words like looptid like street signs placed on desert parcels that were never built this is not the recirculated citations of sapphic oratorios nor is it anything more than the babble of babies who can only grasp its depth before their minds are corrupted with language how long can you look at the grass for after how many hours does it become interesting there we have found the road again the way to the mountain leads away from the mountain what lion may sniff at this poem while it sleeps share blogspot com 2026 07 friday writings 237 html m 1 to use a book title in your poem i chose a book i haven t read it s been a prolific evening hope there s something in it here s the poem on earth we are briefly gorgeous and so quickly does that fade we had such beautiful weather the other day i couldn t help myself but to exclaim it so to a fellow human passing by his reply perplexed i hope it lasts i felt sorry for the chap he was missing it though it was all around him why wish for what will not come to pass the sun may shine strong into the blistering nines the rain may fall light but long or all at once and fill the drainpipes rejoice make little paper boats to float along the roadside gutter the deluge too shall pass on by beauty is so fickle and she ll keep you tickled just enough to keep you pickled and falling after her but soon you ll fade develop spots and bulgy veins make up only goes so far it s time to see who you really are and that time too is so short on earth we are only briefly gorgeous 20260804 share this share on x opens in new window x share on facebook opens in new window facebook like loading august 4 2026 erbiage a song of a single word oh to choose but one of our hundred and seventy one thousand children can we stop there like a red octagon or needs we must look beyond the chalkwhite arrows to what is signified the extent of our ego shines where we dared label love how bold how brash and how so often words fail falter before reaching that glorious grandeur to stuff that into this little sack of a word no wonder we lose sight of it so often despite it s all pervading nature so when someone like that is encountered love more when the car stalls or the tree falls on it love more in fire famine flood or the way your spouse slips under your skin just love more meet anger with love even in my deepest fear that she would leave me abandoned alone worthless open up heart love more it s terrifying how vast it becomes deep and high and wide beyond continents moons and starships a pins head all the other words fit inside it all the other words are made of it it s a wonder that we needed another and yet if you really look eric your heart needs only love it s your mind that spills the scrabble bag and gushes on about it shhh om post inspired by a venerable prompt https poetryblogroll blogspot com 2016 08 poets united midweek motif song oblivion save for a horse who would browse on grouse in the orchestra there remains only a small fragment of a playbill on rice paper remarkable for its survival most is illegible all that can be love travel theres a more important landscape that needs mapping out join the fun https dversepoets com 2026 08 03 haibun monday 8 3 26 journeying 20260804 i would move about the world like a drunken boat or really more like a dry leaf going where the wind lead sometimes the winds of chance were generous and brought me to interesting things places or people but there was no overarching plan no real goal save to enjoy the ride needless to say there wasn t much of a career i didn t need to play any games or so i thought then perceiving them as not real so i carried on and tried to drown in experience later the journeys would become planned with a destination or things to see and do along the way far flung cousins stoked this fire with weddings and reunions and such there is a hollowness in me as i write this though and the common thread is in the mirror not regarding me and perhaps it must be this way a moving out a cutting of apron strings a plan for though i can leave a lot of baggage behind furniture and old pictures of family i never met what always finds its way into my case is me it is a basic human function to invent meaning and apply it to the world i have trouble valuing that though because it feels contrived no matter where or how far the way out is in cradled in berth seeking in sand and sea the rock to stand on share this share on x opens in new window x burnt all to cinders all to allay a fear that never comes to pass kept in this lock lidded cooker done my best to bury it when it blows all sense and lessons and mantras are gone all that remains is a
