him he sings the bonnie ship the diamond in an effort to help kurt understand his family s history kurt seems unmoved frustrated blaine storms away meanwhile we see emma approach will with a problem there s been more underage drinking on school territory emma leads will to her office where rory and puck are slumped in their chairs will yells at them and demands an explanation for their state rory explains that he s been helping puck get in the mindset of those primitive working class laborers that run amok in his homeland to prepare for sectionals puck says he just wanted free booze they ask mr schue to go easy on them by singing john kanaka afterward they both pass out in the chair will and emma discuss how to handle the situation by singing what do you do with a drunken sailor as a duet afterward mr schue decides that this competition is too important for them to be distracted so he insists they both simply go home sick after rory and puck are picked up by their parents mr schue turns around and is confronted by sue he begins to improvise an explanation for sending the students home but sue isn t interested she s angry because she got wind of the fact that the glee club is performing sea shanties she explains her strong feelings on the matter she s worried that the glee club will do a disservice to these traditional songs with their pop harmonies and gimmicky dancing she then sings south australia to elaborate on her own personal connection will says they ll do their best but sue says that s not enough and tells him that she s already gone to principal figgins who has vowed to shut down the glee club once and for all if they don t place first the day of the competition backstage in the dressing room mercedes leads the new directions in a round of old maui to get them excited finally they take their seats and the competition kicks off with the troubletones the troubletones sing northwest passage and barrett s privateers and the members of the new directions realize with horror that someone must have leaked their sea shanty theme to the competition was it blaine getting back at artie was it rory or puck when they were drunk was it sue sabotaging the glee club yet again mr schue assures them all not to worry after all he feels the troubletones took the lazy route by singing stan rogers songs from the 20th century surely the judges will appreciate the new directions commitment to authenticity the new directions take the stage they open with spanish ladies and then rachel steps to the front for her big solo she looks unenthusiastic at first but then she looks out into the audience and spots dave malloy the composer of moby dick inspired to impress him as well as to say goodbye to the school she loves she sings leave her johnny and moves the audience to tears the new directions close out their set with a thrilling performance of donkey riding bringing the whole audience to its feet the results of the competition it s a tie in the lobby the new directions are relieved to find that they have tied with the troubletones and dave malloy approaches rachel expressing his interest in casting her in his new musical but some members of the glee club are restlessly arguing over who might have leaked their shanty theme kurt angrily confronts blaine certain that he was sabotaging their performance out of loyalty to the troubletones he swears his innocence and their squabble is overheard by other members of the troubletones they approach the glee club and confess that they came up with their set independently after all a cappella pop arrangements which are so prevalent high school among glee clubs musically owe much to traditional irish and scottish traditions embodied beautifully for the
