summer activities we enjoy we don t own a fancy car but you don t need to own one to enjoy meandering around town looking at them and talking to the owners and meeting friends summer style cotton august 31 2026 by carmen we took our time to drive to south carolina that way we wouldn t need to rent a car when we got there and could stop along the way wherever we pleased crossing the border at sarnia ontario was easy as pie only one car in front of us and a very kind border guard detroit was a nightmare to drive through heavy traffic aggresive drivers and maniacs driving recklessly at high speeds no wonder they experience high numbers of accidents next time we will avoid detroit even if it takes longer on an alternate route our airbnb in traveler s rest south carolina is about 14 hours from home we drove through michigan our first stop was luna pier on lake erie previously known as lakewood we enjoyed some peace and relaxation and mexican food i love sitting in larger than life muskoka chairs the usa calls them adirondack chairs we continued our drive and spent the night at a hotel in ohio and were back on the road again after breakfast driving through kentucky tennessee and north carolina we enjoyed lunch at cracker barrel old country store and they have a super gift shop perfect sneakers for my capsule wardrobe my new sneakers from cracker barrel we stopped for gas at buc ee s and wow what a place have you ever been there were over a hundred gas pumps and a mega store where you can buy anything except the kitchen sink we have nothing like that in canada only in america arriving at our destination south carolina at a charming airbnb in the evening of our second day i highly recommend this lovely place clean cozy and comfortable the traveler s rest is a perfect name sleeps four with a fully equipped kitchenette it is dog friendly for those traveling with a dog although it s spotless and you d never know it please click the link for a tour on sunday morning we attended church at fellowship greenville with our hosts friendly people lively music encouraging sermon based on matthew 8 the windy road leading up to caesars head national park was awesome from the lookout point we had a spectacular view of the blue ridge mountains and watched the sunset with other travellers who were as thrilled as we were the summit has an elevation of 3 215 feet 980 m on monday we spent the afternoon in greenville this beautiful city has an amazing park with natural waterfalls right in the heart of the city we checked out a nearby hotel with a fantastic gift shop looked more like a museum and art gallery but everything was for sale nothing we could afford but beautiful to see you don t have to own something to enjoy it i like to travel light even if we drive and have enough space for luggage so i planned a little capsule wardrobe of black white red and blue where everything matches i packed black pants so i can wear any top jacket i buy new designer jacket with tags thrifted from goodwill and a white top so i can wear any pants i buy new wide leg jeans never had pink jeans in my life new sneakers bought at cracker barrel thanks so much and can be worn in any season however this shirt dress is long so i will only wear it inside during winter it makes a perfect hostess dress which i wore for an afternoon tea party and when some guests dropped in for brunch i love getting hand me downs from my daughter jean has great style and definitly inspires me she has an exquisite jewellery collection and has given me necklaces bracelets rings and earrings this round silver pendant necklace is a gift from her in summer i m wearing it in town and as a beach coverup living in a beach town feels like we re on an extended holiday and we re lady who upcycles and creates new items giving old clothes and fabric new life case in point these denim skirts upcycled from old jeans these ones are fun and frayed but she also makes outfits that embroidered flowers i knew it would make a lovely summer shacket knowing that jean often likes things i buy i decided to get one for her too and if she didn t like it i can always return it she liked it we ve done many style challenges since blogging to show various ways to style an item jean is wearing a simple white t shirt with a tiny people print paired with green joggers which she had already packed for this visit i chose to wear a ton sur ton t shirt and white crop pants for a fresh peachy look jean didn t mind going into town with both of us wearing these shirts to check out some thrift shops she found a beautiful blush blazer like new and a pink long sleeve top both for 12 i told her i have cargo pants in this same shade of green as her joggers so she graciously let me match her only for this photo on our front porch but not go anywhere in twin outfits gone are the days i could dress her the same as me like my mom did when i was a little girl sigh oh well c est la vie share jean arrived in time for canada day and 4th of july holidays it s been almost three years since her last visit thankfully we have been out west to visit her frequently through the years as well as other traveling adventures together california florida new york and germany it was a mother s delight to see my three children together rare opportunities since jean moved to washington state in 2000 jean took a red eye flight to toronto arriving in the early morning with little sleep and rented a car to drive to our place in kincardine by lake huron about two and a half hours after getting settled and some well needed rest we went for a stroll around town jean s traveling clothes blue and white striped top from germany paired with comfortable wide leg pants my outfit black top from jean s eco boutique and floral bellbottoms similar to ones i made in the 60s photo taken in port elgin to buy cat food and kitty litter stopped by the lighthouse to listen to a piper who plays every evening during summer enjoyed a walk at the beach with a peaceful sunset jean s traveling companion was jazzy the amazing flying cat well she doesn t have a cape or wings but she has a traveling
