no way for me to access it when i don t have cloud connectivity and it s not like mirroring is a big ask this is a basic feature of cloud backup going back many years google drive did it for years and microsoft onedrive my primary cloud backup still does it reliably so what does google do instead of fixing this essential feature today they sent out an email inviting us to buy more cloud storage and that s not all following the classic infomercial strategy google extends this offer subscribe to 2tb of google storage for 100 year and they ll send you a free google nest hub device which they otherwise sell for 100 pet dogs now fly as psychiatric service animals august 22 2021 federalist leave a comment effective january 2021 dot ruled that air passengers can no longer bring arbitrary pets on commercial flights by claiming them as emotional support animals they can however bring up to two dogs on board if the passengers claim the dogs are psychiatric service animal s all the passenger has to do is fill out this single page form there is no independent verification of the claim that either a the passenger has a disability or b the dog has specific training to assist with a disability consumer arbitration june 2 2021 july 19 2022 federalist leave a comment i wasn t surprised to see amazon roll back its mandatory arbitration clauses they are actually quite beneficial to consumers with who can advance their own small claims the companies who impose the clauses have to pay the arbitration fees which can run into four figures as well as lawyers to deal with them a few years ago i caught verizon s fios service failing to honor its own terms for customers who purchase online movies i wrote them a letter threatening to take the matter to arbitration and someone in their legal department quickly agreed to settle with me for a statement credit of 500 i probably wouldn t have bothered if i had to pay filing fees in either arbitration or court irs not really available to help december 5 2020 march 18 2021 federalist 1 comment i had a question about how to properly file taxes in an unusual tax situation why not go to the source federal law established the internal revenue service irs to promulgate the rules and regulations that all taxpayers must follow to certify that they are in compliance with tax law the irs can fine persons for any failure to file and pay taxes in compliance with its rules government bureaucracies may not be fast but surely i thought the irs will tell me how to correctly file and pay taxes in my particular situation after all if i don t do it to their satisfaction they can fine me i thought i d write a letter and wait a few months for an official written response on which i could rely but no the irs is so eager to help that it encourages individual taxpayers to call and speak to its agents directly except that due to covid irs live phone assistance is extremely limited at this time so can you email or mail your question to the irs no the only alternative the irs volunteers is to schedule an appointment for an in person meeting at one of its local offices surprise most of those offices are short staffed and only deal with people who have been assessed fines and want to work out payment plans all search paths ended with an instruction to call the irs by phone so i relented and called its extremely limited telephone assistance line 800 829 1040 1 2 2 3 4 five levels into the automated phone tree i got a recorded message telling me to go to irs gov and look there for the answer to my as yet unarticulated question then the automated system hung up on me yes i already exhausted my web browser searching for an answer to my question on irs gov undaunted i tried a different path 800 829 1040 1 2 2 3 1 after 15 minutes a real live irs employee answered the phone he asked me to explain my question and helpfully concluded that i would have to speak to someone in the irs tax law area for an answer he transferred me to that area where an automated message said due to high volume we are unable to assist you at this time please call back at a later date then the irs phone system hung up on me again plastic bottle deposits still july 15 2019 federalist 2 comments it has been more than a decade since people began to realize that consumer recycling programs often consume more resources than they save note the updates in the comments to that post while recently passing through new york i bought a 3 case of bottled water and was surprised to see an additional 2 container deposit fee added to my bill sure enough new york is one of ten states that still collect bottle deposits even as manufacturers have managed to shrink the plastic content of a half liter bottle to less than 10 grams new york charges a 5 cent per bottle deposit on each bottle in that case advocates of bottle bills suggest that the deposit encourages responsible consumption of containers recycling and a reduction in litter they skim over the fact that consumers only get the deposit back if they transport their empty bottles to a collection center and feed them one by one into a redemption machine this consumer end collection mechanism even when utilized is almost certainly a net energy loser what s the real world effect of bottle deposits in this era of curbside recyclable collection towns have to pass additional laws to prevent hobos from tearing through curbside trash trying to pick out containers with deposits states get to feed the increasingly uncollected deposits into their general funds so almost everyone is hoping that the deposits are not collected by consumers container deposits are mostly a curious tax that reminds us that legislation is not the best way to enact good intentions how emdr therapy works october 22 2018 february 22 2021 federalist leave a comment i have been researching emdr which is a psychotherapy for ptsd many advocates and practitioners of emdr therapy hypothesize that bilateral stimulation is an essential component of the therapy s effectiveness but recent research on a working memory model wm provide evidence that any sufficiently distracting activity is as effective as directed eye movements or bilateral stimulation from the best paper i read on this subject traditionally during emdr eyes are moved horizontally in line with the wm account but in contrast to original explanations moving eyes vertically is equally effective crucially the same effects occur if wm is taxed during recall with non eye movement secondary tasks like listening to a series of non words auditory shadowing drawing a complex figure or counting tasks that are presumably hardly taxing like simple finger tapping do not have beneficial effects while more complex tapping does likewise activating memories about a previously seen trauma film while playing taxing computer game reduced flashbacks in the week afterwards whereas emdr has been advocated as treatment for past trauma the wm theory implies that negative images about future events flashforwards can be treated as well experimental evidence confirms this finally wm rightly predicts that individuals who are bad at multi tasking derive more benefit from eye movements counting et cetera during recall of negative memories emdr eye movements superior to beeps in taxing working memory and reducing vividness of recollections behaviour research and therapy 49 2011 92 98 californians strain at a gnat december 14 2016 december 14 2016 federalist leave a comment two years ago the california government enacted a 4000 word law to essentially ban retail stores from providing single use plastic bags and requiring them to charge customers at least 10 bag should they desire recycled paper bags to carry purchased goods last month this law was sustained in a referendum proposition 67 california is a peculiar state but in reviewing the background of this law i found essentially three arguments plastic bags produce unsightly litter never mind that littering is already a crime in california plastic bags harm or kill wildlife lots of things natural and artificial harm and kill wildlife i ve never seen a wild animal killed by a plastic bag and i don t know how that would happen nevertheless i ll concede it as a possibility but anecdotal photos of animals with litter don t make this argument where do wildlife management scientists rank plastic bags on the list of threats to animals e g above or below lightning strikes plastic bags are produced from petroleum actually mostly natural gas and hence are not environmentally sustainable first of all bag grade plastics can be produced from all sorts of renewable plant sourced polymers second of all even if they are all produced from fossil fuels they could still be the most efficient use of those resources presumably people have to carry their groceries in something what do they use and what do those things cost to produce and maintain or what are the sanitary costs if they aren t maintained california is straining at a gnat while swallowing camels on all these matters if the concern is wasting petroleum and creating trash why not step up enforcement of existing litter laws and build waste to energy plants that would recover vastly larger quantities of litter and energy than this disproportionate focus on one consumer item grammar magnetorheostatic not magnetorheological november 11 2015 november 11 2015 federalist leave a comment magnetorheological is often used to describe fluids that change viscosity in response to magnetic fields and this is why engineers should be required to have some basic training in language magnetorheological is as nonsensical as it is unwieldy let s apply some etymology magneto is fine the phenomenon is a magnetically controlled likewise rheo makes sense the phenomenon applies to flow but logia that s the study of a phenomenon magnetorheology is a field of study not a description of the things being studied so what is a reasonable word to describe something whose flow characteristics can be controlled through magnetism english has a precedential term stat is a suffix for regulating devices in fact a rheostat is a device for regulating flow so a magnetorheostat would be a device for regulating flow using magnetism and the adjective for the substance and or device so controlled would be magnetorheostatic how tax policy drives quirky compensation july 24 2014 federalist leave a comment in some european countries tax rates are so high that there are vibrant parallel black market economies but you don t have to go to the old world to see this distortions of healthcare markets by the tax code are something with which most americans are familiar california has treated us to some more salient examples even moderate income families in california can face marginal tax rates that approach 50 when an employer tries to pay a worker one more dollar the employee takes home slightly more than 50 cents most employee benefits however are tax free that means that the benefit could be worth half its cost and still be a good deal for the employees laser corrected optics june 28 2014 federalist leave a comment this is just cool this article describes how the keck observatory uses 40w laser pulses to measure atmospheric disturbance which can then be reduced by changing the shapes of segmented 10 meter telescope mirrors and post processing the resulting images of course you can t just go firing 40w lasers willy nilly into the sky the fda considers any visible laser with output greater than 5mw to be hazardous so the observatory has some interesting safety measures in place our federal aviation administration approved approach to aircraft safety is to have two spotters outside during all laser operations with switches to shutter the laser we also have an ir camera boresighted to the laser that will automatically shutter the laser in the event of aircraft detection prior to each laser observing run a list of targets and their observation times is faxed to the laser clearinghouse at the us space control center the space control center faxes back a list of any required blackout periods to avoid illuminating satellites the beauty of bounties november 8 2013 february 19 2014 federalist leave a comment bounties for solving big or hard problems are not new but they should be more common i was impressed to discover a data company snl that issues cash rewards to anyone who finds errors in their data based on my experience not many data vendors could afford to do that so it serves the dual purposes of advertising their quality and ensuring it and yes it s real i recently collected on a handful of errors uncovered during some tedious work many major information technology vendors have publicized substantial bug bounty programs for researchers who reveal serious security flaws in a gracious manner i e instead of exploiting their discoveries to attack blackmail or humiliate the companies as is a sometimes attractive alternative another interesting error bounty is donald knuth s begun in 1968 for errors in his publications i assume he began the program because he realized he had authored the most important reference texts in computer science and he wanted them to stand worthy of the role obviously the scientific community agrees since the bounty check is minimal and rarely even cashed evidence of earning it is far more prestigious helium a very non renewable natural resource may 13 2013 federalist 4 comments where are the environmentalists when it really matters they pitch fits about depleting natural resources most of which are to some degree renewable or replaceable except for one in particular that is practically both irreplaceable and non renewable helium and who shows up to lobby for the continued preservation of this natural resource a coalition including orthopedic surgeons industrial welders and balloon makers helium has a number of unique characteristics that make it indispensable to current industrial applications and that seem likely to make it essential for future technologies here s one interesting backgrounder on the element unfortunately those characteristics include exceptional levity and inertness so when released into the atmosphere helium gradually evaporates into outer space the only source of terrestrial helium is radioactive decay which over eons has produced some natural concentrations in impermeable geological formations when we drill into these formations for natural gas we often get small quantities of accumulated helium once we have tapped those pockets we ll essentially be out of industrial quantities of helium the prudent course of action which the u s government has been leading is to stockpile helium found during drilling in the federal helium reserve this reserve just became profitable which strangely required congressional action to allow it to continue operations higher education bubble update may 9 2013 september 4 2026 federalist leave a comment acta has been fighting against...
