september 2008 fetching fibers fetching fibers finding color in work life archive for september 2008 been busy stitching september 12 2008 my first sept bjp piece design from the outline of an image created using the online kaleidoscope tool at www krazydad com kaleido an extension of a project begun during my recent studio journal class with sharon boggon more journal like bjp this piece symbolizes the way that health concerns have cut a wide swath across my life plans learning through my faith that there is a plan and a purpose even in this thing that seems so burdensome on its own i am learning ways these trials can also bring beauty and pleasure in my life and to those around me a finally finished ufo tags bjp posted in bjp projects 9 comments mounting finishing bjp pieces ideas september 9 2008 i happened across a link i wanted to share with some cool suggestions on mounting fiber collages that may change my bjp plans as it has opened up some new possibilities and ideas for finishing my bjp pieces a call for entries has gone out for next year s fiberarts for a cause project collage mania 2009 all materials are acceptable but collages must contain some fiber paper fabric or other fibrous material there are no restrictions on content or style art quilts are of course acceptable all entries must measure or be finished to a size of 10 8 but they provide a faq on acceptable mounting options if your collage is not 10 8 by the way i did finish my first sept piece plus two more all different shapes and sizes however no pictures posted yet either plus the faq i ve linked to may change things altogether so i m really not very far along in the making a final choice in the size department i ll keep you posted tags bj planning tips posted in bjp leave a comment first project sept 08 september 4 2008 on sunday i couldn t settle down on a size or a subject for my first month s piece for bjp 08 despite my written goals and plan with so many choices with long term effects i felt anxious and fragmented it reminded me of a halloween costume i once wore in college that was simply a bunch of mismatched unusual garment elements as a whole it looked a bit like a traditional clown but i knew it reflected the variety of thoughts and convictions that were waging war within my heart remember kaleidoscopes from your childhood a bunch of colored bits and pieces in the bottom of a tube yet when you look into the tube those bits and pieces combine into a lovely picture well there is a highly addictive you ve been warned website that will take a photo and turn it into some of the most beautiful kaleidoscope images i had recently seen a piece of art that was a major sized collage of a bunch of smaller kaleidoscopes i considered simply sewing on a bunch of sequins as a reflection of my unsettled state oh dear my anxiety was picking back up again trying to reign in my anxiety i reminded myself that the bjp rules page specifically instructs us to measure your growth and success against your own work not the work of the other participants t hink of the bjp as a framework for you to explore and expand your own creative pathway my next step was to apply what i d learned from david allen s book getting things done what is the successful outcome of this month s project how will i know that i have finished the project in a way that i will be pleased with it looking again at my goals and the list of similar goals from fellow bjp participant kquiltybee my confidence returned the next step was to look at the subject list i d made a list of subjects i wanted to explore as potential series i d thought about exploring these subjects in a variety of mediums techniques and had committed to using these subjects in in my bjp pieces to my surprise on the list was something called isolated kaleidoscope shapes project i ll describe the project idea more fully in the next post at the end of my last post i had noted my concern that working from a list of subjects would somehow not fit the idea of the bjp as a monthly visual journal but decided to follow my gut instinct that my idea would somehow work iteself out how interesting to recognize that the very first subject i chose is from my original list yet at the same time reflects in a visual way something that is going on in my life at the present time a feeling of being fragmented and uncertain reassured that even my bits and pieces could come together into something of beauty i pulled out my studio journal and started to work tags bjp08 planning subjectlist posted in bjp isolated a common theme whether by subject technique or theme however since i m a beginner and still figuring out what works for me and what does not i want to use the bjp to try different techniques different types of beading surfaces different kinds of beads making notes of what works and what doesn t after much thought here are my basic goals and plans for this year s bjp 1 size smaller is better i believe i am going to pick a 3 3 4 4 or maybe even atc size smaller size with a plan to display them all on a single display of some sort a smaller size will help me to not fall behind as the year progresses and life gets in the way and will not preclude me from also working on other larger projects throughout the year i m still working on the size choice and have made cardstock frames to use as viewfinders in selecting the layout of my pieces 2 explore different surfaces bead sizes and techniques using supplies i have on hand for years i ve researched and collected the supplies and tools to design and make cool things i now have an overflowing supply of new and recycled supplies and tools while i thoroughly enjoy the life of the hunter gatherer it is time to move into the life of the accomplished artist taking my ideas and supplies and creating finished pieces set up and on display in my home to share with my family and friends for my bjp monthly pieces i am going to vary the type of beading batting subsurface the type of beads the type of pattern encrusted vs embellishments the surface design techniques 3 use my studio journal to plan projects and explore my favorite subjects list i have a list of subjects that i m hoping to use as the subject for my bjp pieces in writing classes we are told to write what you know to write about the things that interest you the most i ve made lists of things i might explore several times over the past two years i m always amazed at how consistent the lists are regardless of current events in my life and the world around me i even started a few projects but they were never finished because 1 i hadn t thought through the plan before starting 2 they were set aside to make gifts for others instead of valuing my decision to create art for myself and just for art s sake or 3 i didn t quite know how to finish them for displaying after making a commitment to actually create more finished projects i took sharon boggon s wonderful studio journal a designer s workhorse class by the way i just saw that it is being offered again in october it is a great class and i highly recommend it now that i have a studio journal to collect my ideas work through designs and plan my projects better the projects i start should actually make it through to completion so i thought i d use the bjp as a place to begin putting it all together a place to explore some or all of my subjects list perhaps after a start with the bjp piece that month i ll expand the subject into a series of some sort exploring the subject across different media or techniques 4 bjp pieces as a visual journal the only lingering concern i have with my plan is how it meshes with the idea of each month s project being a visual journal of what is going on that month i m finding myself a bit stymied on this issue reluctant to move forward 5 trust my gut anyway however i have been finding the last six months that my gut instincts are good and should be followed i ve been pleased with the results when i follow my instincts in artistic endeavors despite logical reservations ingrained from far too many years of non artistic academic education so today i choose to follow my instincts and have put in writing my goals and plans for the coming year who knows perhaps i will find something on my lists that will lead to a project each month that also relates to the goal of having a monthly visual journal note this post was written over the weekend but was delayed in getting posted tags bjp08 planning studiojournal subjectlist posted in bjp subjectlist leave a
