ly fort ticonderoga stood between the british and the hudson river the strategy of the british became obvious if the two british armies now threatening ticonderoga and new york city could meet they would cut the american colonies in two there was good news too about the time the men arrived at bergen they learned that they were no longer fighting for the united colonies but for a new nation on july 6 news arrived from philadelphia that a declaration of independence of the united states of america had been signed by the continental congress on july 4 10 new jersey upon arrival in bergen the company went to work building a fort to defend against a possible british attack from staten island the urgency of the situation became apparent on july 12 when they heard cannon fire coming from downstream then the british ships phoenix and rose sailed past them up the hudson unscathed that evening they learned that the ships had anchored off tarrytown new york blocking supplies from crossing the river at that point the company continued to labor erecting fortifications through the rest of july and into august while british ships loaded with soldiers continued to arrive in new york harbor on august 12 benedict resumed recruiting and by the end of the month had added another 34 men bringing his company roster to four officers and eighty three enlisted men seven of these men were veterans of benedict s 1775 company bringing the total to eleven this included noble s brother sergeant jonah benedict this does not mean that the others who were on the canada expedition were no longer patriots and willing to serve as described above five were still in canada most of the others had already joined or soon would join other militia or continental units such as the 13 th regiment of light horse or colonel cooke s 16 th militia regiment based in danbury 11 all summer the company waited for an attack that never came when the british did move it would not be up the hudson but in long island patriots and loyalists in the second year of war patriotic sentiment still ran high in danbury enough so that one hundred soldiers volunteered to defend of connecticut and the united colonies but not everyone shared this sentiment many residents of the town were loyalists and they did not want to serve when the british arrived off new york city in july of 1776 they saw a way to firelands introduction stephen jarvis jr grew up among his mother s kin the starr family in danbury connecticut but he also spent time with his father s family who lived 25 miles away on the connecticut coast in the lead up to the american revolution the two families were on different sides his mother and her family were patriots his father and the rest of the jarvis family were loyalists stephen naturally followed his father s sentiments but after lexington and concord his loyalties would be tested garrisoning new york with the evacuation of boston in march 1776 some americans thought hostilities were over and the army at cambridge could be disbanded but general george washington knew better the british would be back but where he had placed his bet months before correctly as it turned out on new york city already his soldiers were on their way to the city washington had recognized the importance of new york at the beginning of 1776 and in january he ordered general charles lee to raise troops and garrison the city to speed up preparations to defend the city washington requested that the governors of colonies around the city to send militia to garrison the city and throw up fortifications until the continental regiments arrived governor trumbell of connecticut sent twelve hundred men under colonel s david waterbury jr and andrew ward for a few weeks in february they were relieved in march by another two regiments under general s gold silliman and matthew talcott 1 a tory boy in the patriot army a company of militia from danbury were included in the second call up probably under the command of caleb starr who was a patriot as were the rest of the starr family among the soldiers in his company was his nephew stephen jarvis son of his sister rachel 2 when stephen was drafted his father offered to pay for a substitute but still upset at being forbidden to see amelia stephen refused and vowed that he would go in response his father took him by the arm and threw him out the door after dark stephen returned unobserved and went to his room and bed he remained out of sight the next day which was sunday and on monday he left for the assembly point which was his uncle s house as he passed his father stephen said goodbye but received no reply before the company departed stephen s father appeared he once again berated stephen but when the young man would not relent he ordered horse for him to ride and gave him some money the company arrived at pecks slip near the present day brookline bridge in new york on tuesday and stephen s uncle had him stay in his quarters with him stephen wrote in his memoirs that his uncle had a son with him a little younger than me with whom i spent my time most agreeable during his short stay in new york before the continental army arrived to relieve the militia stephen stayed with his uncle who was overseeing work on fortifications governor s island and then staten island in the harbor off staten island the british frigate asia was anchored close by the stern of the asia lay another british ship the duchess of gordon where the royal governor of new york had sought refuge when forced to leave his mansion in the city his name was william tryon stephen considered finding a way to get aboard and join the british but the opportunity to escape did not present itself to stephen and after a day and a half he and his uncle returned to peek s slip the next morning his cousin woke him up early and told him to look out the window the streets were full of american soldiers from the army in boston relief had arrived and the mission of his uncle s company was done they were dismissed and returned home to danbury return to danbury when he arrived stephen apologized to his father and vowed that he would never serve in the militia again for good measure he also promised that he would abandon his affections for his sweetheart amelia glover of newtown the former promise he had every intention of keeping as for the latter within a few days as soon as i had replenished my wardrobe he set off to see her and they declared their vows of love and constancy his father s reception when he returned home the following day was everything but pleasant because he had joined the militia and gone to new york stephen may have allayed doubts about his patriotism with his patriot neighbors soon he would be tested
