know what they say about good intentions and the infernal paving scheme i have decided that much as i encourage people to be kind to one another and themselves i am going to give myself a break and not fulfilled my aim of reading dan mclellan s the bible says so though i keep up with dan s work online and continue to be grateful for his insights and refutations of bad biblical scholarship and misinformation i remember a time when i thought i had all the answers when i thought that i knew about what was in the bible that i read the bible in the way it was meant to be read i know now that i was being fed a certain way of reading scripture that backed up my presuppositions rather than allowing scripture to challenge me or allowing me to challenge the scriptures i read when writers such as zach lambert whose book i reviewed in my last post or dan mclellan offer new ways of learning about the bible and its construction and new ways of interpreting and viewing the bible i now realize that two reviews done quickly it s been a busy couple of weeks with some heavy stuff to deal with but i did get zach s book read what a delight this book is really worth five stars it s accessible written with clarity and depth there s a warmth about it that is engaging and encouraging zach reminds us because many of those who claim to be christian don t believe it that we all read the bible through interpretative lenses i grew up in a church tradition which thought that it read the bible in the right way that the interpretation given by the pastor was the only way we should look at scripture as soon as i started studying theology i realized how many different ways the bible is read and that more often than not more is read into the bible than actually comes from scripture better ways looks war of the worlds was my favourite book as a kid in elementary or as we called it in england primary school i read it about seven times before i hit eleven years old at such a young age i didn t get all the deeper critique of human inactivity in the face of threat of watching the world burn of the words of the introduction containing the eventual downfall of the invaders i just loved the book and i read and re read it and though i am a voracious reader there are very very few books i read more than once i also thanks to my buddy gary discovered jeff wayne s musical version of the war of the worlds which i still love i even like the remake that came out a decade or so ago and whilst researching links for this post i discovered that the grand spectacle filled high tech musical is still on tour not at the moment it seems but it has been performed in the netherlands at a couple of venues this year so i will keep an eye out for that as i still love it post a comment read more preparing to weeks one which i bought a few weeks back and that i haven t got around to is dan mclellan s the bible says so it s a biblical scholar s response to common misunderstandings and misinformation about the hebrew and christian scriptures i already watch dan s excellent videos on social media they re available on youtube facebook tiktok insta all the usual suspects and worth checking out and it seems that reading about engaging with scripture which to be clear is a lot of what i do for a living is where my focus is being drawn at present because i have pre ordered a copy of zach lambert s better ways to read the bible i have also joined the book launch team for zach s book so i have been given an advance copy i think having paid for a copy myself which i am very happy to have done will keep blogged years since i used this space with any intention though i have blogged on our church website st john the divine victoria as well as writing some articles for our local paper which has a column and a blog which can be found here and sharing them on social media my latest reflection was all about dei and can be found should you wish here a few days back a friend of mine who is also a lutheran colleague who worked in this diocese for a while shared a reflection on her blog in which she pondered whether it was time for her to start blogging after a ten year break it was a lovely gracious reflection and i recommend a read it also made me think that rather than the journalling i have been meaning to do for a decade or the limited run of theology bites videos which i shared here and
