red to those in america i feel like it will be hard to go back and pay the ridiculously high entry fees for races here they only cost about 20 euro s even though i don t want to pay those prices i have learned that it does cost a lot of money to put on these events in the end the event coordinators and managers do deserve to get a cut i have been able to experience sports outside of my internship as well some of the girls and i went to croke park to see a hurling match it was amazing to see how the irish interact and watch games i was amazed at how many people were at the match 30 000 the most amazing thing though for me was that no one here knows what tailgating is can you imagine american football without tailgating before the game in ireland what they do is you go to a pub and grab a pint and then you walk on to the stadium once you get to the stadium though there is no alcohol at your seats once again can you imagine american football or baseball without beer at your seat this whole experience has taught me a lot i have learned to not live on such a strict schedule here in ireland people do very little planning don t get me wrong people plan but not months and months in advance like most americans do i have learned though that you must have multiple back up plans once something goes wrong you just need to smile and act like that is how everything is supposed to be then move on to one of your back up plans i really am going to miss dublin i am going to miss walking everywhere and going from one side of the city to the other in less than an hour by foot i am going to miss some of the words and some of the brands that i know i will never see again it has been a great summer that has taught me a lot about myself i am so glad that i partook in the gaelicgirlprogram i ll miss the fish and chips kaitlin carroll reflecting on my time in ireland gaelic girl kaitlin carroll while here in ireland i have gained invaluable work experience and become more independent i work for a tourism company as a social media and marketing intern i update all of their social media sites and make contacts with other companies that offer trips to ireland in an effort to expand our company i also go on different tours to learn more about ireland and the company i work for i think that working for this company has been a great insight to working in one faucet of the tourism industry and that it is hard work connections must be maintained and customer service is key to affirming a good relationship in addition to that i have learned that working hard for the company will gain their respect and confidence in their decision to hire you last i made great connections for my future career by working with the tourism companies and interacting with so many people i think that i have become more independent from living on my own for these past few months i might live with other people in the apartments but i had to organize plans for my free nights and weekends create a spending plan so i didn t go crazy with money and making sure i worked hard at my internship there was no one to make sure i went to work each day or make the most of each evening and i had to make sure i accomplished everything that was expected of me i enjoyed the experience of living abroad and in a different culture because i had to adapt with each new situation i thought ireland would be wet rainy and cold with lots of warm sweaters and boots but we have had absolutely fantastic weather which makes exploring the city and tours a thrill i also love the accents and culture many of the people i have met whether american or irish are very kind and welcoming of my presence especially those at work there is a casual atmosphere in the office i work in and it is nice because even though these people work hard to maintain the company s reputation they definitely enjoy everything that they do and the people they work with in leaving i think i will miss the friends i have made here and the beautiful countryside that i have been able to travel around ireland is a gorgeous place and i have truly enjoyed getting to know different people on the trips and befriending my tour drivers in addition to that i will miss being able to eat the traditional foods such as fish chips or bangers mash which are prepared so well here standard posted in gaelic girls opinions time in ireland gaelic girl victoria wain it has been a fantastic number of weeks spent in ireland i have learned so many new things met so many amazing people and experienced so much leaving here a week and a half earlier then i am supposed to was not an easy thing to do everything in this country is absolutely beautiful everything you look has a story to tell the whole country is a new learning experience it is nothing like it is in the states there are some similarities between the two countries but for the most part they are completely different interning directly for gaelic girl benefited me in so many ways my communication and journalism skills have increased so much i have learned new ways to talk to and interview people i have learned so much about the culture of this country working here was also just so much fun i got to explore the city and surrounding area as part of my job writing articles and taking pictures on a daily basis not only helped my journalism skills but now i have detailed articles and amazing pictures of everything that i did while i was here i think that with every country that you visit you learn something different and have an experience that you can take home i think that with ireland i have learned a lot about myself and about my heritage growing up in an irish american family i already knew basic information about ireland but coming here and going on the tours you learn a lot of stuff that you don t know you get a new appreciation for the irish family that you had that survived the irish famine and started a new life in the states coming over to ireland with gaelic girl was an experience that was definitely worth it you get to learn and see things that you cannot even imagine you go to places like the cliffs of moher and the blarney stone and see them in person which is completely different from just seeing the photos online overall the entire summer was an amazing experience and i would come back and visit ireland again into trinity is unlike any other college campus the buildings are all so old and unique and there are probably a lot more tourists on this campus than students i waited in line for 20 minutes before making my way inside to see what trinity had to offer i started on the ground floor of the old library where there are many different ancient artifacts and books one of those books being the famous book of kells the old library began in 1592 with the founding of trinity college in 1661 henry jones gave the school the book of kells which is a manuscript gospel book in latin it contains the four gospels of the new testament with various texts and tables there are always two of the four books on display the book itself has the text written rather large on the pages and is written in calligraphy after i finished looking at the book of kells i made my way to the long room the long room is the largest library in ireland and was built between 1712 and 1732 walking into this room i was amazed as i had never seen so many books in my entire life it was just shelves and shelves of books the long room actually reminded me of the library from the harry potter movies with the ladders to get books off the top shelves and the books everywhere overall my experience at trinity college was a great one the history in the sections that i saw was just so interesting and worth looking at the long room was probably one of the most interesting things i have seen during my time in dublin standard posted in dublin history travel tagged american students book of kells dublin explore gaelic lunch break so you work 8 and a half hours ireland at least with our internships we work anywhere from 5 8 hours one hour lunch break included dress code states business casual or business clothes ireland jeans for the most part or business casual lunch breaks states based off every job that i have had for the past 6 years you get either 30 minutes or an hour for lunch you must clock in and out so its documented how long you are gone for one of the first jobs i ever had i was a lifeguard and i once clocked in a minute late from lunch and got a written warning seems a little intense to me ireland the 5 of us gaelic girls have internships all over the cities our lunch breaks just like at home average from 30 minutes to an hour the difference is that at 3 of the 5 locations the supervisors don t really care how long you are gone one of the girls even told us that her supervisor said that she wasn t being paid so they really couldn t tell her how long she could take for lunch it was up to her time off states depending on where you work you could get anywhere from one week to a month off of vacation time throughout the year most businesses do close for national holidays so that is more vacation time also most places will give a mother 3 months maternity leave ireland a minimum of 20 days vacation time extra vacation days will include the bank holidays maternity leave is 6 months here other european countries could be up to a year of maternity leave office states cubicles and very ugly offices ireland open areas with tables and windows all over the place makes you feel that you are working in an office on the beach final thoughts after noticing all these things and then thinking about the people of america and the people of ireland i came to the conclusion that maybe we should adapt some of the irish work trends people in america normally dread going to work but here they all seem happy about it everyone is so cheerful and happy all the time they all smile at you and say hello that is not the case at home no one on the street will smile or say hi to you if you are caught staring at someone they give you a glare i m sure its not just the way that the irish work that makes them a happy bunch but maybe we could learn something from them standard posted in dublin travel tagged america ethic gaelic girls ireland study abroad work 0 comments 07 18 13 by gaelicgirlprogram victoria s views are the homeless in dublin really homeless wandering throughout the city i noticed a lot of people on the street asking for spare change after passing a couple of these homeless people i started to wonder about them where do they go at night do they have homeless shelters in dublin do they make enough money to survive growing up in the u s i noticed homeless people all the time if i went into the city they were extremely dirty they had bags or shopping carts full of their belongings they looked like they hadn t showered in months and their clothes were torn i expected the homeless here in dublin to be the same but most of these homeless people have brand new nike sneakers they are extremely clean they didn t have any bags or belongings with them and had a new change of clothes daily this made me wonder if these people are actually homeless or not i even saw a homeless man one time with a smart phone he was sitting on a bridge with a pet bunny on his lap and a smart phone in his hand playing a game he then had a cup in front of him asking for spare change we were all very confused i am sure that there is a decent amount of homeless people here in dublin and other parts of ireland but the homeless that i have seen here just don t really strike me as homeless if they are actually living on the streets where are all their belongings no one would just leave all his or her stuff in one spot and hope no one takes it where do they get the money to buy brand new sneakers it is not like they can just steal sneakers from a shoe store or off a person s foot i did find out that there are homeless facilities in dublin they have homes for people to come sleep in and most of them state that the people for these shelters cannot have a drug or alcohol problem that made me think about the homeless with the nike sneakers i wonder if these homeless are actually just drug and alcohol addicts that need money to get their fix and then they have a home to go to at night it would explain why they are so clean why they are wearing different clothes each day and the brand new sneakers the last thing that i noticed about the homeless here is that they don t stay in one area they move around a lot you could be on capel street one day and see a homeless man and then the next day he would be over by trinity college so is it that he didn t make enough money on capel street or that the people there know he isn t homeless the homeless in the u s that i have seen stay in one area i saw the same woman for four years while driving to school everyday she never moved out of her location i am sure that some of these people i see are in fact homeless but when you walk down the street and people with smart phones start begging for spare change it really makes you wonder standard posted in dublin travel victoria s views tagged american students dublin explore gaelic girl homeless ireland observation opinion question smart phones study
