garden ally tuesday july 12 2016 west texas wild things in the vastness of the davis mountains there is beauty in a landscape where the brightest colors come from the blueness of the sky at first glance there doesn t appear to be much going on in the landscape at 6 000 feet the davis mountains are the high dessert of texas as i was hiking i started to notice that the landscape was not as empty as it first appeared the little pops of color that grabbed my attention were made more special by their rareness i started to see plants that i recognized like these purple verbena and silver pony s foot these plants have not been living the easy life they were stunted and hardened by a life of too little water and plenty of sun but they are survivors then i saw some plants that really attracted my attention this is mullein growing wild and proud i have no idea why i like this plant so much probably because i like plants with interesting stories and i ve heard it said that indians used mullein as toilet paper it s certainly soft and fuzzy enough i bet it would put charmin to shame i saw clusters of cholla cactus blooming here and there until we took the scenic loop drive through the mountains then there were forests of cholla blooming for as far as the eye could see the ocotillo were not as plentiful but a spotted a few i m not sure why but when i buy plants at the nursery i don t always connect them to plants that grow wild somewhere in the world well davis mountains was like a texas native plants family reunion i saw so many plants that are in my garden i was amazed see if you recognize any of these i even saw kidneywood blooming in the wild well actually i smelled it first i m saving the best for last this plant was completely new to me it s called apache plume these plants were everywhere heck it s probably a weed in the davis mountains but i thought it really stood out perhaps this wild thing will be coming to a nursery near you soon posted by ally at 4 43 pm 14 decided to pay a visit lucky for me the giant corpse flower morticia was blooming morticia s botanical name is amorphophallus titanum so she s not to be confused with the carrion flower stapelia gigantea which i wrote about in the blog i smell dead things don t get me wrong though morticia is not called a giant corpse flower for nothing she is one stinky plant lucky for me she was almost finished blooming when i saw her so her smell had faded the amorphophallus titanum has one of the largest and rarest blooms it can take 7 10 years for the plant to flower subsequent blooms are irregular they may take 7 10 more years or 2 3 you never know i guess that s one of the things that make it so special even if morticia is not in bloom walking through the moody gardens rain forest pyramid is lots of fun there are plenty of other cool plants to see like this pitcher plant monkeys and birds are free to roam the pyramid so close encounters are not unusual the critters that inhabit the pyramid are used to people so they mostly just go about their business the pyramid also hosts some busy butterflies like this zebra longwing if you ve got the time i would highly recommend a visit la the la flower district that is i had no idea such a fabulous place existed so i was pretty excited when some friends suggested a visit during my recent stay in los angeles try to imagine more flowers than you have ever seen in one place and you probably won t get close to the number of flowers contained in these ginormous warehouses the flower district is contained within a city block in downtown los angeles here you will find flowers vases floral supplies and just about anything to do with flowers and flower arranging including live plants everything is for sale at wholesale prices it s heaven for flower lovers i wanted to stuff my suitcase full of driftwood and old grape vine planters but i didn t have an inch to spare darn my pathological need to over pack if i lived in la i would be in so much trouble these arrangements are so awesome and the prices are incredible the creative side of me was itching to grab a vase and some cool decorations so i could create my own masterpiece this seashell wreath would be the perfect backdrop for a floral masterpiece just look at all these plants waiting for a good home we stopped over in la following a cruise to hawaii i have to say i saw lots of orchids in hawaii but i saw ten times more orchids in the flower district i don t know what these flowers are but i totally want them don t you think they look like underwater sea life i think they d go perfectly with all those sea shells there s so much cool stuff in the flower district next time i go i m bringing a pick up posted by ally at 8 52 pm 27 comments email this
