wondering why nvidia had so many announcements that seemed out of cycle for them well fms future of memory and storage was last week and nvidia used it to announce a few things one was a new industry initiative called storage next that will promote their open sourced cufile apis and the storage stack beneath them these files traditionally lie in the proprietary cuda stack so why open source them now i ll just quote from the techradar article the kv cache essentially the attention state for every token already processed grows with context length and agentic deployments run thousands of concurrent conversations it quickly outgrows gpu memory and recomputing evicted entries costs more gpu time than reading them back so the standard design spills from gpu memory to system memory and flash and refills through high volumes of small random reads serving that from flash rather than dram increases the context length and the concurrent user count each gpu can support which in turn affects the per user cost of serving a model this also explains why nvidia is focusing on 512 byte iops rather than raw bandwidth since inference performance depends heavily on the former that s interesting for flash drives 4kb read requests are the norm if you know this too you probably also have trauma from supporting oracle back in the day the problem is that inference reads are very small but you have lots and lots of them at around 512 bytes if the flash drives are tuned for 4kb and get hit with tons of small requests it will over saturate the drive really fast nvidia needs the rest of the industry to get on board and adopt their open sourced technology to open the way for flash drives to feed their gpus for inference the question becomes what s the alternative to using nvidia s stack tech goes in cycles and now we re swinging over to small sized read requests to increase gpu utilization it reminds me of those oracle days and supporting clariion i also wonder was there real time tech reporting during the ethernet vs token ring protocol war i ve only heard those stories from the victor s point of view we re living through history y all techradar link in the comments aiifd understand there are some phenomenal opportunities in front of kamiwaza and i wish them all the best great version 1 0 product by the way if you have serious governance issues when it comes to ai especially inference you should check them out this means that i am indeed looking for my next opportunity i do so with a deep knowledge of how ai integrates with the existing enterprise software estate but also how ai development and solution building is going to completely change the way enterprises institutions governments evolve in the coming decades i am grateful for the responses i ve don t know ryan that s okay i didn t know who he was either he s like the stoicism guy you can tell by his best selling books sold out talks and even a podcast that rivals we re not marketers and the only reason i know his name is because dave did his thing brought in some killer speakers for year 2 at drive and introduced me to a topic i ve only heard of in passing halfway through his talk he stops points into the crowd right at us what s going on with the mustaches i froze said something stupid zach covered for me and the stoic went right back to his talk like nothing happened but we were losing it we got the ryan holiday to break his stride over our dumb little bit fast forward to last night my fiancée s trying to sleep while i m sneaking an episode of bill maher like i have almost every week for the last year and a half context he always opens one on one with a guest and last night his guest was ryan holiday now of course i just laid there grinning like an idiot because three years ago we re not marketers was a dumb little outlet for product marketers to vent and feel like they weren t alone in this world and somehow by showing up to these events paying money we don t always have at the time and refusing to hide in the corner we ve ended up in the same rooms as people who get invited onto late night tv i don t know if there s a point to all of this but if there is it s that your life can change at a thing you almost didn t go to someone you admire can pick you out of a crowd but only if you choose to be in the crowd if you re a marketer drive by exit five is
