december 5 2013 by grant i learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it the brave man is not he who does not feel afraid but he who conquers that fear nelson mandela posted in tips building self confidence october 23 2013 by grant one of the things that can continually hold us back from moving forward is our lack of self confidence and self esteem there are many ways that we can work on this and with small steps we can build towards more confidence and a positive self esteem we need to hold on to beliefs in that carry a positive spin rather than living with anxiety and pain daily for many years i held beliefs that i was a failure this stemmed from an unsuccessful time at school and failing more exams than i passed if i was really true to myself the reason i failed at school was not a lack of intelligence but priorities were certainly not academic work it has taken many years for me to work through these issues and even today sometimes i find old beliefs come back i think about how much more i could have done in my life if i hadn t been crippled for so long with such a low self esteem and self image the good thing is that it is never too late and i have learnt to celebrate the personal successes that i have found so difficult in the past don t rely on external factors to build your self esteem a lot of it comes from within and if we rely on affirmations from others we can be very disappointed we need to do some work on ourselves it doesn t come from looking out the window we need to build a strong foundation and this comes from within we are very good at determining what we do wrong but find it hard at determining what we do right so it is really important that we start looking at things in a more positive light the answer is building some good habits so we can build towards a positive self image the way we view ourselves affects everything we do people with high self esteem have few problems developing good relationships with others they take a positive outlook on things and seem to have plenty of energy to spare a person with high self esteem generally has a high level of productivity and happiness i am working with a client who is intelligent and capable but is working in a job that is not suited to him each day he goes to work he shows signs of anxiety and it has got to the point where he doubts his ability to do a good job he gets up in the morning dreading the day ahead we discussed this thoroughly and we found that the environment that he works in is negative and not conducive to his working style he needs to be working in an environment that is encouraging and positive and this will get the best out of him the upshot of this is that he is now working in a new career that is much more suited to his working style and surrounded by people who are positive and encouraging his self worth and esteem is so much more positive this is just one example of how things can shift quickly when we decide to make a positive shift in our own lives the following are some ideas that can really make a positive impact on our self esteem make small steps one of the clients i worked with became so introvert that he found it difficult to engage with anybody so we looked at things that he enjoyed doing he loved his daily walks along the water front so we decided while he was walking that he would attempt to say hello to everybody he walked past while walking this was extremely difficult at first but after the first week of doing this he became so much more confident in dealing with himself and others he felt himself smiling while saying hello to people walking by and the response from people was always positive this has become a positive habit and has made a huge impact in his life set goals and tasks for the day for many people just getting up out of bed is seen as a success so write down the things that need to be done during the day and tick them off once completed the list in the morning could be get out of bed have a shower and clean teeth have breakfast make lunch clean the dishes put out the washing and then go to work these are eight things that have been done in the morning and by ticking off as each is done we recognise that we are creating good habits and are ready to face the day connect with friends connect with encouraging friends not ones who continually bring us down if you feel like disconnecting simply connect go out for a coffee with a friend to the local café create a vision imagine yourself as in control confident and ready to face the day visualise how you are going to talk to people do this for a short time each day start your day feeling positive and saying to yourself this is going to be a great day do something out of your comfort level do something that you would generally shy away with give it a go try making it a habit it might be going to the gym the more we do it the more we feel success in what we do do something you are good at regularly doing things you are good at reinforces your self belief it might be making enjoyable dinners encourage or help others when you help others you feel better about things and often feel the appreciation of what you are doing also encouraging people can really make you feel better as well look at particular areas of your life list areas of your life e g health relationships finance fitness etc and write down 1 10 how you rate yourself it is always a good gauge come back to the list regularly and see if there are changes create a plan having a goal alone won t do much how you are going to get to that goal will be much more helpful write down the how s get motivated read something that is inspirational surround yourself around positive people ask for positive comments from your friends affirmations use affirmations but be honest and specific with them don t compare don t compare yourself with others it doesn t help at all when you find yourself doing it stop page 1 2 3 4 8 search
