2014 categories uncategorized meta create account log in entries feed comments feed wordpress com search for couldn t wait fabric pattern action okay so i don t know what i m doing properly yet but couldn t wait so drove to the shop to pick up a magazine i saw mainly because it came with this then i searched to find somewhere i could get fabric from bearing in mind i had booked in to get my nails done later that day so didn t have much time i decided to go to akabans a shop i found in preston about 25 min drive away this is what i bought not sure if it right i was not even sure about what fabric it was but hey it s written on the receipt so i know now the receipt also shows how much i paid as thought this might interest people also i already have some fabric i can make a top from as well so i am planning on making 2 skirts one in denim and one in the stripy material and 2 tops one floral burgundy material i already have and one pink i though if i do 2 then at least the second one should be okay right so i have started just wish i had known about the carbon paper thing first oh and how to get sharp points oh and struggling with the zip oh well nothing ventured nothing gained serves me right for being impatient will let you see the end result whether i will actually be able to wear it or not could be interesting p june 14 2014 heidiclapham dressmaking fabric shopping preston shopping sewing 2 comments dressmaking 5 week course okay so didn t blog the first week but will keep you up to speed i do not know what i am doing when it comes to pattern cutting or how to follow a pattern but i am going to learn these guys are going to help me hopefully in week one we were all given a pattern and we also picked a fabric first lesson was to check measurements and do not get depressed if you are a larger size than expected but do check the measurements which are written on the back of the packet we all went through what was what on the packet pretty basic really if you actually read it other ladies had more experience but myself and one other lady had both attended how to use a sewing machine class together so i felt comforted by this as it was a beginners dressmaking course i took the longest to pick my fabric but ended up picking a blue floral cotton next we cut out all the tissue and then pinned it onto the fabric this took the whole of the first class we got homework which was to cut out the fabric the next week started by us being shown how to transfer markings for this we used a pin wheel and carbon paper okay so i know what a pin wheel is now i inherited one of these from my grandma a picture is below so you all know as well transferring marks from the paper using this was so much easier than i expected i would recommend this method to anyone we sewed lines for gathering we will be shown more about this at a later stage then we sewed darts these were marked and easier than i thought we then were shown how to do seams lining up the darts we had marked so all matched up exactly was quite impressed with the accurate way this turned out we did have a tip of placing masking tape onto the sewing machine place to ensure the seam width stayed even this worked a treat and i will be putting some on my own machine we were taught to sew then press we also were shown how to clip seams to ensure seams laid flat and corners could be pressed flat just look at how sharp the point is on the last photo and also my seam lines up with the with the top middle photo so that s as far as we got this lesson my pincushion was also admired although it doesn t quite stand up quite right not bad considering i had only just started to use a sewing machine oh course me being inpatient i have already bought a pattern and fabric before learning any techniques will put this in a separate blog already know it could be better even after just 2 lessons so wished i d known how to transfer markings already dreaming of a capsule wardrobe black dress winter coat etc june 13 2014 heidiclapham dress dressmaking sewing class leave a comment exploring shops in sunny blackpool thought i would try and explore a couple of shops in a blackpool searching for fabric firstly i know what the sewing sanctuary or grace and favour have at marsh mill in thornton as i ve done a class there already they have done lovely fabrics they also sell patterns wool and few other bits and pieces but i wanted to explore other possibilities notice the blue sky as was a gorgeous day x first it was trim it this shop is on bond street in blackpool it does however look shut but the door was open as you enter the fabric is on the left and from what could see a counter in the left hand side i braved going inside as looked as though it may be trade only i looked at the crystals on display and they had lots also feathers and trims i asked the gentleman about the fabric and if he sold to off the street customers he said he did he also said that most of the stock was actually at the winter gardens at present due to the dance championships taking place turns out trim it is one of the leaders in dance fabric and supplies everything you need to make those fantastic dresses you see on come dancing this i thought was a little out of my league but worth knowing what they sold the next shop johnsons again just across the road from trim it so worth a look so much fabric but plenty of wools and notions ribbon and interesting bits and bobs i was impressed however by the buttons wow couldn t even fit them all in one picture okay so not much of a explore but a couple of places crossed of my list may 30 2014 heidiclapham blackpool shopping buttons fabric shop leave a comment busy weekend learning how to use a sewing machine busy weekend this weekend after going to the big smoke on friday for my shoe making course which i will go into detail more in other posts i went to brockholes for a crafty vintage fair on saturday never been before brockholes is just off the m6 near preston a floating village most unusual some interesting stalls selling vintage type items i treated myself and bought some vintage placemats for my craft room oh and a pie for my other half x then on sunday i went on a course on how to use a sewing machine i bought a new machine and wanted to be taught properly as getting a little embarrassing when i don t know how to use one properly i did my course locally at marsh mill in thornton i love this little place they are so friendly and sell lovely items also they are not that expensive i was taught well and came away with a cushion for my craft room all included in the price i was mightily impressed as we re all the other ladies who attended the course we didn t want to leave emily our tutor was lovely and put up with our sometimes stupid questions and was patient and knowledgable x cant wait to do the 5 evening dress making course with them x i also find some cooking making steak pie lemon tarts and lemon drizzle cake for the clan when i got back home a lovely and productive weekend may 26 2014 heidiclapham brockholes craft fair cushion sewing class sewing machine vintage leave a comment lazy sunday well don t you just love sundays a leisurely morning with a caramel coffee and cinnamon toast with blueberries and a drizzle of honey x then into my studio still feel so lucky to have a room like this after toying around with ideas i decided to block 3 hats this is the first time in a while i have done some blocking but managed to get back to grips with it quickly just like riding a bike i blocked a small round in a re purposed dark turquoise green it has a lovely fur on it and i just loved the colour i washed and cleaned fur felt well before re stiffening it to re use it the second is a small biscuit coloured heart shape and the third a grey felt cloche this is the first cloche i ve done i also made some silk flowers with my flower iron a very old one i got from ebay a first treated the silk with a dilute stiffener mix and also dyed it by using silk paints in orange and yellow the leaves you can just see in the picture are made from green velvet ribbon using a technique taught by bridget bailey i love her designs and so wish i could attend the chateau she is teaching at this summer i probably have done her a great injustice in my leaves which are bonda webbed on a backing sandwiching a millinery wire in between they are then pressed very hard onto a pre cut lino cut with groves representing veins giving a texture to the velvet a full tutorial is in a recent issue of hat talk magazine well worth a look if you like millinery this was my first attempt and really should have used proper velvet as opposed to the ribbon as was not the best i love playing with materials in my room with no one to bother me and not having to clear off the table for dinner after blocking and flower making i will post a completed picture i then made a bag this was a bag for patients in hospital to carry drips in as they walk around and was something i had seen on grace and favour the place that taught me how to use a sewing machine i plan on making another couple of these with the bits of material i have already in my stash and it was good practice to use the sewing machine again well at least i remembered how to use my machine x may 25 2014 heidiclapham blocking millinery sewing silk flowers leave a comment one of my favourite places x today i ventured down to london for the last week of my shoe making class and this time i had a little time to explore i was going to go to walthamstow market after researching some places to go to buy fabric but due to a points failure and them something on the line my train was late this was the place i had been informed by so e of the lively local ladies on my course was the best for buying fabrics at reasonable prices never mind instead after dropping off my bag at the hotel i went in search of mac culloch and wallis another shop i had been informed about this shop had plenty of trimmings and even some basic millinery materials however i was not overly impressed and what s more i did buy a few bits and the cost was expensive compared to what i usually pay and the items were no better then what do you expect when the shop is just off oxford street in central london next another shop liberty s never been into this shop before and it is so pretty it has very unusual items which i loved bird cage lights and unusual home items i was lucky enough to see the heads up display which featured awon golding one of my favourites who had displayed hats that looked like giant ice cream cones with the cone being made of sinamay and the ice cream of plumes of feathers in rounds they looked fantastic after this i caught the tube to south kensington and to the v a victoria and albert i love this place and could spends hours and hours here but today i had booked a ticket to the wedding dress exhibition no photo s were allowed of the dresses but the history was described through different ages and styles my favourites were kate moss s dress which when you see the detail of the feathers and embroidery is just beautiful i loved the veil as well and how it complemented the dress perfectly the other dress i loved was dita von teese s dress which is if you haven t seen it a gorgeous purple colour i just love london wish i had more time to enjoy and explore further below the v a and the cafe which is one the most stunning cafés i have had the pleasure of having a cuppa in x may 22 2014 heidiclapham liberty s mac culloch wallis shopping london v a leave a comment my craft studio i moved to sunny blackpool in february before this i lived in the beautiful yorkshire dales but moved due to work and family my home in yorkshire was a tiny quaint little terrace cottage a very nice home but no room to swing a cat as the saying goes clive my ragdoll is looking a little worried at this prospect my new home however is larger and has a spare room which i have claimed as my studio now i do dabble at quite a few crafts so need the space to be adaptable i looked up and researched ways to use space i wanted the space to look good as well as being practical i also after moving needed it to be economic i needed lots of storage as well i well my dad built shelves each side of the mantle piece which i will get roman blinds to cover when i get the curtains up as well these hold most of my materials and tools i painted the furniture and mantle piece using chalk paint not the expensive brand but a cheaper version i bought tester pots the table was going to be thrown away so a spruced it up and painted the legs the plate rack on the wall i already had and bought from a friend and painted the display cabinet i bought from ebay for 20 just up the road and the long shelf was left over from the shelves with legs from ikea i also plan on having a peg board to hold tools but i intend to paint it to look like a cross stitch future project no doubt will be posted the green chair was 15 from a shop which is like a goldmine for collectors called bygone times it s in eccleston near chorley so it s not quite finished yet but i love my room x i feel so lucky to have such a space april 26 2014 heidiclapham blackpool craft room organisation sewing room leave a comment well here i am and my first blog hopefully i will get more techno aware as i proceed down this path first i ask myself why well a few people have asked me to share skills and ideas i make loads of different things which i thought about for a while and then a while longer so a little about myself since a young age i have always enjoyed making and crafting i was always drifting into my dream fantasy world of creative thinking something in heign sight that must have driven my teachers round the bend at school i love the whole process i get excited about learning a new skill looking for the unusual planning out a design and different possibilities also sad but true i get excited about organising and especially shopping for materials that i will be using i have been fortunate enough to spend time with some fantastic creative people and love sharing ideas skills and experiences so here i am to widen that experience i do not profess to be an expert in all areas and i work full time in something completely unrelated people do seem amazed at the amount of things i still get through some state that i must not sleep i ensure you i do it s one of my other favourite things to do to lounge in bed especially on a sunday now for other household residents my other half who has put up with the mess the excursions to hat ...
