l over the country and because of those connections i m smarter now than when i started back at derby middle school so what was the next step write a book of course together with the amazing joe schmidt director of k 12 education at colonial williamsburg we ve put together the best of what we ve both learned over our time in the social studies world read more oct 10 2 comments throwback thursday primary sources and personal stories awesome sauce i got the chance this week to chat a bit with my kids both now in minnesota and during the convo with the youngest we ended up talking about a letter written by a norwegian ski instructor in 1943 the guy was teaching us and canadian special ops guys to ski as part of preparing for undercover operations in norway and it got me thinking about how personal primary sources and artifacts can help us tell better stories to hook our kids into content and provide context to larger themes and i flashed back to this post from a couple of years ago it s throwback thursday it s always fun having my kids around during the summer we chat about books take short trips discuss politics argue about gardening techniques and they make fun of my love for the kansas city royals the youngest one heads back to school in minnesota in a few weeks she s been busy this summer selling snow cones and working in the local library and wait for it she also spent two days a week as an national archives unpaid intern at the eisenhower presidential library and museum in abilene how cool is that the other day she got the one on one backstage pass tour of stored artifacts she knows i love the golf so she made sure to share how among other things she held dwight s augusta national member s green jacket and his favorite golf hat you know just rubbing my nose in it read more oct 7 4 comments are you a dinosaur and what to do if you are it s been a few years way back in 2011 as part of an every seven years legislative requirement kansas department of education consultant don gifford started the process of reviewing the state social studies standards but instead of simply updating some language adding some new resources and calling it good don led the writing committee down a completely different path rather than asking the committee to create a list of required content items don pushed the committee to look at the research and come up with something that went beyond the simple memorizing of historical facts the result a set of standards that focused on creating a balance of content and critical thinking skills a lot less memorizing and a whole lot more application and process as a co chair of the writing committee i can tell you it freaked some people out okay it freaked a lot of people out read more aug 13 your students have trouble making connections connections can help after last week s post about back to school social studies activities i had a bunch of people ask about using connections in their classrooms so today a bit more detail most mornings a pretty much the same for me coffee quick scan of the news feed and then straight over to the new york times connections game it s easy to get addicted so if you re someone who has yet to discover connections run away seriously save yourself it s too late for me a few months ago i jumped in with the rest of the world and get sucked into connections at its most basic connections is a game that asks you to find connections between 16 different words with you winning the game by grouping those words correctly into four different categories during a game you might select cloud cotton ball sheep and dandelion from the list of 16 words in this example the category is fluffy white things congrats you just made your first connection each category is assigned a color representing a different difficulty level yellow is the simplest purple is the most difficult with green and blue in between read more aug 7 3 comments social studies back to school don t do that do this i was chatting on a text thread with a group of teachers and administrators last week when one of the high school admin types casually mentioned that her first day back with students had gone pretty well seriously cue my stunned surpise i know more and more districts are cranking up during the first few days of august but it s still always a shocker and maybe that s you too already deep into it or stepping off the edge into the student zone soon if that s you this post may be a little too late but i m hoping that for most of you you ve got at least one or two more weekends before your first few student contact days to help energize your awesome first week with kids try some of these great ways to kickstart the year in your social studies classroom use what you can adapt what you can t ignore the rest read more jul 19 3 comments maybe you haven t noticed sheg is dig dig is sheg the stanford history education group has been around since 2002 sam wineburg sheg s founder one year earlier had published a book titled thinking historically and other unnatural acts charting the future of teaching the past both the book and sheg outlined a social studies instructional concept that at the time was pretty revolutionary inquiry based learning give kids a compelling question provide them with primary sources and other evidence train them to make sense of the evidence ask them to develop and share a solution to the question using that evidence the basic idea was that students need to be able to make sense of social studies content and connect that content to contemporary issues the idea caught on the national council for the social studies developed their c3 inquiry arc states across the country including kansas rewrote state level standards around the idea that teaching social studies is more than just content district level admins began developing injury based curricula the problem there weren t a ton of instructional examples out there the early adopters who bought into the idea weren t really sure what inquiry based teaching could look like the stanford history education group became one of the first groups to begin offering teacher tools and lessons based on this new idea of claim evidence reasoning all sorts of groups soon followed and now you can find cer stuff everywhere but while there were others who contributed to the development of cer and inquiry in the social studies field i m convinced that sam and sheg were the ones who kickstarted the whole thing and just so you know the sheg stuff is amazing and free practical useful ready to use based on research teacher tested us history lesson plans world history lesson plans did i mention free teachers around the world and in all 50 states have downloaded their stuff 15 million times do the maths that s a lot of downloads but read more older entries search follow history tech on wordpress com glenn wiebe social studies nerd consultant tech guy thanks
