uncategorized i am reinventing this blog to try something quite new for me what i am attempting is a type of entertaining anecdotal journal style of writing that will hopefully fall comfortably in the overlap between honesty and comedy but i could just as easily miss this venn diagram entirely and end up firing my dart of creative optimism into the fleshy shoulder of self indulgence and when that happens everything will just be painful and awkward with this fear of coming across as an insular wanker admittedly at the forefront of my mind it seems quite unusual that i would begin my first story in the way you are about to see not even teenage angst songwriter angus would approve of this ghastly first line but i am trying for honesty here sadness has always been a big motivator for me anyone who knew me in high school would be likely to attest to the fact that i was a moody socially frustrated kid who struggled to assert his own identity in the shadow of his much more personable friends i was often sad and anxious which motivated me to write a lot of sulky songs and poems after high school many of my closest friends began to move away and i took to blogging on an almost daily basis in order to fight off that fear like i might end up forgotten right now i feel unhappy about that first sentence of the paragraph which motivates me to keep writing and improving don t look back at it it s behind us both now and we needn t spare it a second thought my most recent bout of sadness was really big it consumed me and drained me of all my energy for weeks even months i knew i needed a change but i didn t know how or what needed to be done to help myself i would go for long walks to the shops to pick up groceries all the while lost in a fog i can remember being supported by a shopping trolley as i pushed it about the isles of the supermarket on the verge of an emotional breakdown right there next to the expensive organic mueslis i was a mess and at this point i bet you re wondering if this supposedly entertaining blog will be reaching some sort of satisfying payoff i was at the point where i was dragging along the grimy basement floor of my own misery that something caught my eye a distant university acquaintance from the area had decided to attend a facebook event for a local poetry slam and it was on in a day or two i ve never been to such a thing before and i d had no idea anything like a poetry slam was happening locally i didn t even completely appreciate what might happen at such an event would i be out of place turning up all by myself would i be the only one who turned up at all would there be free wine and cheese these were the big questions that flooded my mind yet something told me i should go i needed to go i didn t understand it but the idea of it appealed to my inner wanker i craved the cultural and social experiences now more than ever disaster struck just a few hours before the slam as i got up out of my computer chair to fetch my shoes i felt my body folding up and falling to the floor it was as if my spine had been swapped out for soft wet udon noodles whilst i had been unassumingly wasting my life on the internet i couldn t get up after weeks of plummeting to emotional lows my body had decided to follow suit i called out to my housemate for help and as he assisted my journey back to my chair he asked about the poetry slam my back was killing me but i couldn t not go the poetry slam was my way out the shakeup my life needed i propped myself up against my doorframe awkwardly worked my socks and shoes on to my feet and hobbled off to poetry naturally i was the first person to arrive at the slam it was an event that was held every month in a small gallery just off the mall and i was a curious newbie who had just turned up early without any accompaniment i aroused the curiosity of the friendly young pair who ran the event unfortunately i m a tedious social disaster around new people at the best of times but this time i was trying desperately to hide my back pain i didn t want to appear to have the body of a tedious old man to go along with my personality i looked around the room at the small intimate stage and the seating around the room secretly fearing what the venue s bohemian furnishings might do to my delicate vertebrae eventually i took a seat on the spongy lounge having mentally prepared myself for the very real possibility that i might end up growing old and dying in that chair over the next half an hour the room filled with a respectable number of young lively and interesting people it s obvious that these people were repeat slammers by the familiar way in which they spoke with each other everyone catching up and asking the important question are you going to slam tonight soon everyone took a seat the lights dimmed and i was eased into to the conventions of a poetry slam as the performers got up occupying a small space in the dim spotlight on the intimate stage i forgot all about the pain in my back and felt my mind and emotions being gently washed over by the gentle rhythms of the poems each performer would share something deeply personal laying themselves bare while the audience would quietly click their fingers approvingly and shoulder some of their burdens i can t speak for the other people in the room but i felt these experiences and feelings being shared in such a beautifully graphic way helped ease things out of my own mind i wouldn t say it cheered me up but it helped me begin the process of sorting in a space that didn t feel so lonely it was a safe place i even started thinking about things i had mentally buried years ago like the sudden death of an internet friend that i had never really managed to deal with properly at the time i still had a way to go but my first poetry slam marked a turning point in my emotional health i spent the whole walk home trying to mumble my thoughts and feelings in a rhythmically pleasing way i still go to angus baillie under try it out tuesday so this week for try it out tuesday i m going to be reviewing a show i like to avoid talking about at all costs i don t know what it is about doctor who that makes everyone get so weird and obsessive i sometimes feel like i must have some rare antibodies that make me immune to the lure of this extremely average show because i watch it and just kind of shrug yeah it s okay i guess it s a bit in love with itself this seems like a completely fair critique of a show that flits about inconsistently between tones ties desperately to be quirky and funny and regularly writes itself into a corner from which only complete sci fi rule breaking gibberish can save it but apparently saying this out loud is deemed outrageous and calls for ultimate fandom panic in lots of scenarios so between these threats to my personal relationships and the occasional glimpses of the show i sometimes in my weaker moments wonder if i should try getting into it so when they announced peter capaldi as the new doctor i thought ok i like him he s in shows that are actually good and he s often brilliant in them maybe with this new change will come a new and better show so now that the new series has kicked off i decided to watch it and give my thoughts it s still shit ok by that i mean it s still tremendously overwhelmingly average and still carries an aura of insufferable self gratulation that far outweighs the few moments here and there where i think the show might actually be sort of good the problem i find with the show is how completely worthless most of the episode tends to be it s always bad jokes wacky characters and the doctor muttering to himself and repeating rhetorical questions to himself while the plot just kind of drives itself for the first 80 of the episode then it s all big dialogue heavy sci fi philosophy show downs at the end with one dumb action hero quip thrown in and there you go run the preview for next week i must admit though i do love what capaldi brings to the role he has this brilliant sense of wisdom and well meaning fury about him that makes me feel like tensions will be high and truths will be deep even if they probably won t be because the writers for the show are rubbish he actually reminds me a lot of the way hugh laurie played dr gregory house in the popular u s hospital drama house m d yes there s a fucking m d there in the title and i demand we say it he has the whole brooding vulnerability coupled with ultimate truth bearer vibe down to a tee i must say it felt weird watching the show try and deal with the new doctor they kept making this big fuss about how he s so old now and old people are gross because they re wrinkly and have dementia i mean for whatever reason most of the show was watching the doctor wander about in his pajamas being confused about things it was pointless and ill explained and it just made me feel uncomfortable for capaldi who just got this weird sort of typecasting as a senile elderly who had escaped his carers i mean i know he s a great actor and can probably handle this stuff but my god it was like the show trying to apologize for casting him yes we know he s old and probably harder to masturbate to than matt smith or david tennant but if we can explain it just right i m sure they can look past all that well fuck you bbc peter capaldi is angus baillie under throwback thursday today it s throwback thursday the day of the week the gods themselves designated to the sharing of old photos with unflattering lighting to remind us of how very little we ve progressed personally as well as collectively as a species for the purposes of my blog throwback thursday will feature far less of the haunted shipwreck some have referred to as my face and instead be more of a reflection on past trends memories or really just whatever old shit i can think of off the top of my head and muster up enough sarcastic energy to write about this week we ll be looking very deeply and lovingly at the backstreet boys we ll be staring longingly into their eyes peering into their souls and becoming lost in the very essence of what makes them who they are wait no we won t be doing that we ll be poking fun at this song of theirs because it is ridiculous enjoy hahahaha i hope you enjoyed that because i certainly did if you decided to skip over the video and just see where i m going with this post then you have truely missed out and i genuinely pity you now when i was 9 or 10 my best and only friend and i genuinely loved the backstreet boys the backstreet boys as any true 90s kid could tell you had a series of hits from this era that could only be described as the good arse shit so naturally my bestie and i had a copy of the album which had this track as a bonus at the end of it even then at 10 years of age we knew we knew that this song was awful hilariously awful this song had my friend and i in tears of hysterical laughter one more than one occasion but then we used to laugh at the sound of dialup internet so what the fuck did we know about what was funny well as it turns out i still laugh out loud when i hear it i think kev is my favourite as he knowingly attempts this slow barry white esque tone the thing i love is that it s trying to emulate a kind of cheeky sexy playful conversation in a really chilled natural tone but what it actually does is make me think of five pretty boys with floppy hair locked up individually in sound proof recording booths trying take after take to charm the pants off the microphone in front of them because each of the parts of this natural conversation would have had to be recorded separately for mixing purposes and to make sure that it all sounded and i don t use this term lightly
