lesbians are less likely to spend lots of time in grooming and far less likely to expect their partners and friends to do so that suits me i am basically lazy about this kind of stuff long before i be earning more than the straight girls you went to school with nobody knows why this is the case but there are different theories about it these include that teenage girls growing up knowing they were lesbian are less likely to fantasise about having a partner who will be the main breadwinner and look after them they know they will have to earn their own living and so this encourages young lesbians to work harder at school and get established in the job market another theory is that lesbians are less likely to have children until very recently lesbians having children unless they had already been married to a male partner were pretty rare we all know women who take time out of the workplace to have children suffer career wise for this so the less lesbians have children the less likely they are to suffer career wise a third theory is that lesbians are more likely to prioritise their own education it is still common if straight couples don t have much money for the family to automatic an improved education does increase your chances of earning more and lastly as the research shows lesbians are more likely to choose work in traditionally male dominated careers these tend to be better paid than female dominated industries perhaps lesbians by already defying what is expected of women are more willing to defy expectations when it comes to career choices as well well paid job she lives alone in a modest house she is buying but i couldn t understand how even though she earned much more than me she always seemed short of money of course it was none of my but in general i think lesbian women do look younger than straight women why this is i don t know but i think it is really noticeable i look around at my lesbian friends in their 40 s and 50 s and most of them still look reasonably young okay nobody is going to mistake them for a 20 year old but they don t look old either amongst straight women some still look relatively young but some look so overhear when queueing for a newspaper but as lesbians when we go home and close the door we can escape from all that with our female partners we don t have to deal with the sexism that it is impossible for women who sleep with men to escape from now of course that doesn t mean all lesbians are lovely kind and caring but it does mean that it is one less issue to deal with in what is usually your closest relationship straight women on the otherhand if they are in a relationship have no choice but to deal with the inevitable sexism from their partner on a daily basis if their male partner is not nice the sexism may be extreme but even if a straight women has chosen a nice man to partner there will be some low level sexism that she may not be aware of as i have already mentioned in a previous post straight women on average do much more housework than their male partners that is down to either overt or subtle low level sexism many men do the diy rather than their female partner if spending an evening socialising with a straight couple it is usually very noticeable that the man will generally talk more than the woman and that it is the woman who will have taken the time to actually organise the arrangements for us to meet up and this low level sexism is usually invisible to the woman in the relationship or viewed by her as a failing of her individual partner it is only when you are not spending much time with men that suddenly much of this low level sexism becomes obvious of course sometimes from the outside of a relationship you don t really see what is happening straight away i am reminded of one friend who is married to a nice man he is respectful listens to her and supports her career it was by chance though that i discovered that she takes a taxi to and from the supermarket every week to get the weekly shop because she can t drive while he a car driver sits at home because he hates food shopping and they both think this is okay so i love how on june 15 2012 by happylesbian when i was young the straight women i knew had as many friends and socialised as much as the lesbians i know did but as we have got older it has become very noticeable that the straight women i know do very little socialising with friends now i know some lesbians come out and socialise find the woman of their dreams then drop out of sight unless they and their partner split up when they suddenly reappear again but a lot of lesbians continue to socialise very regularly and go out with friends unsurprisingly lesbians with young children do seem to socialise a lot less but this increases again as their children get older so it is a temporary phenomenon the straight friends i have still have friends but only socialise infrequently i really really value my friends and love meeting up with them and going out i am 45 but still go out about 3 4 times a week with friends and this is very common amongst the lesbians i know that don t have young children some of my straight friends have said they are jealous of my active social life so why is this i can t find any research into it but i suspect it is because straight women are very much sold the myth that their male partners should be everything to them their partner should be their lover their best friend and be able to meet all their needs of course this is unrealistic no one person can meet all your needs most of us need a range of people to support us make us laugh and spend time with but if you believe the myth i suspect it will encourage you to neglect existing friends and not prioritise time
