directions this could go but to what extent in what ways do you see overlap between what you ve studied in classics and what shows up in tos inc films and fanfic vulcannot answered wonderful such fun it s very very common in tos so i m not going to hit everything but there s quite a bit i can say off the cuff vulcans take inspiration from multiple places i d be remiss not to mention their roots in judaism but their influence from stoicism is really strong the stoic focus on reason as the only true virtue is an obvious parallel to vulcan values around logic but i think the most interesting similarity is how vulcans deal with pain spock s pain is a thing of the mind the mind can be controlled mantra from my dearly beloved operation annihilate is similar to stoic views on suffering if reason is the only true good and lack of reason is the only true bad no external force can ever cause you harm in a way that matters this is part of the reason that stoicism was sometimes embraced by the enslaved in the ancient world and why it s been so successful at comforting death row prisoners in the modern day i think that s really vulcan on the subject of their long lost relatives i m very much on record as a roman cardassians truther but back before they ever stepped onto the scene the romulans as presented in balance of terror are obviously both by creator intent and by common sense the original space romans of star trek their ideals about honor and suicide their naming conventions the rank of centurion a dude called decius their militarization there s a lot there i find it interesting that as romulans developed past tos their characterization becomes less and less tethered to the idea of being derivative romans in space figures and straying from tos for a moment i also find it interesting that cardassians roman characterization manages to be quite different from the romulans while still evoking the same ancient culture on another roman note while plato s stepchildren is very classical greek in aesthetic w the platonians ostensibly claiming to be following plato s republic which is debatable i also think there s probably some inspiration from the chaos of the dinner of trimalchio in petronius satyricon as well as some of the more extreme depictions of imperial excess by nero and caligula s critics there s an interesting parallel as well between parmen s use of the telekinetic ability because he can control the bodies of others he has power and they do not and the idea of the roman paterfamilias possessing ius vitae necisque the right of life and death over the household i e much like parmen he leverages his control over their bodies to cement his position at the head of the hierarchy this loops back to the imperial theme w the parallel between the position of the paterfamilias ober the household and the position of the emperor over the populace sometimes all of this gets distinctly weirder and worse like in who mourns for adonais and bread and circuses there i d argue that classics particularly the discipline as tos 1960s writers would ve known it is entwined with white supremacy and western exceptionalism in ways that taint the casting aesthetics and language of a lot of the most bluntly classically influenced trek episodes but this is a really complicated subject that i ll have to elaborate on later if someone s curious there s also troubling implications if you read into the association between starfleet and these classical motifs the british and american empires have used the idea of the new rome as justification or motivation for their imperialism and this clashes with some of the moments where the show paints the federation as a colonial power i don t think this is a conscious choice with the entire show rather the writers biases end up showing through this medium like they show in so many other areas of the series priestofthepremise respectfully this is one of the hottest posts i ve ever read on tumblr my godddddddddddd would absolutely love more discussion as hinted at by last paragraph the way classics are employed as part of the likely unintentional but very potent themes of white supremacy western exceptionalism colonialism and imperialism in trek i ve said it before and i ll say it again i love this show and also i don t see enough good faith criticism along these lines 6 8 by it and i fear i am just the kind of person to get my enjoyment of a thing ruined by a later installment season one was magic it drew directly from the original work by pratchett and gaiman with a few additions that i thought improved it but on a base level it was the same thing season two lacked something and i think it s because it didn t have any pratchett in it this wasn t anything he had written it has good parts we can see what gaiman was bringing in but the way it ended was devastating and kind of undermines aziraphale s progress up to then season three was written by all new people for good reason and it s unsurprising that it s not entirely consistent it s a tragedy to the art that it had to happen this way like i understand everyone wanted closure but it was always a long shot that a whole new group of people could do it in 90 minutes anyway season one the one actually based on the book is a complete story with a satisfying ending so i kind of want to fall back on that on the fics we were writing after it where they just settle into the bookshop and are happily in love forever after that s the ending i always imagined for them everything solved the world not doomed to end and god letting the two of them get away with being what they are because that was part of her plan all the time that these two spirits are what they are and make the choices they want to make
