misunderstood and taken for granted within the culture around us when love approaches marriage that marriage is increasingly seen as a temporary moment of elation followed by years of drudgery that begins with fingers crossed behind wedding veils and cummerbunds in the faintly inarticulate wish that they ll be the couple that makes it when i was in pastoral ministry full time and even when i m asked now performing a wedding ceremony is always filled with mixed emotions for me but for none of the reasons one may think obvious over the years i have seen the marriage and the promise to god and their spouse take a back seat to almost everything else too often the couple pays more attention to the endless details of the wedding than they do the critical preparation for marriage inordinate thought is given to the venue and lighting and photography to the placement of the bridal party to the little nuisances that will make their day special from all others the world s values of planning a stunning event creep into the hearts of well meaning couples who move towards the big day like extras on the walking dead staggering through a daze of invitations floral arrangements dress and tie colours venues meal servings and where they will seat that awkward uncle too often people forget that the big day is followed by a big lifetime of work and joy and aggravation and stress and blessings virtual life too yes i know it s all real life but indulge me we need time to relax and decompress we need time to walk or sit or shop or watch netflix and just do that we need time to let our brains see what s around us and fully engage in whatever we re doing there are dozens of scientific studies that tell us we sleep better think better de stress more and interact better once we disconnect for a bit we know it but we don t do it do it 2 volunteer giving to others when they can offer little in return is helpful not only to them but to us as well volunteerism is shown to make us feel better and give us perspective it also gets us out of our own lives for a bit you have talents even if you hide them well and others need what you can offer so go babysit for free deliver some food go build or repair something do something behind the scenes it s good for everyone even you 3 eat well and get rest remember when you were told to eat your veggies and go to sleep i do it sucked but then i became an old man and realized my mother was correct please don t tell her eating well treating ourselves in moderation and getting lots of rest improves cognitive functions emotional responses and overall health that s really good for stress not eating well and getting little rest makes stress worse so eat the pear and go to bed find a rhythm that works for you and stick with it 4 go towards the light see that thing in the sky it s called the sun and you need to spend some time around it offices classrooms tablets and phones all work better inside and that s ok but don t forget to get outside fresh air exercise and just time outside of our indoor environments give us a chance to unwind breathe reconnect us with nature and relax if you leave your phone home or just us it to listen to music as you walk even better 5 realize that you are more than you think you are it s easy to forget that we are more than flesh and blood we are emotions intellect mind and spirit as well spend time praying and thinking through faith issues spend time wandering around in your head and heart in healthy ways spend time cultivating things that are more than temporary having a perspective of our lives that goes beyond the day is a good and healthy thing bonus talk it out if you are stressed you need to find someone to talk to about your feelings and the causes churches schools parents friends and others may not seem to understand what to do about stress or legitimate issues that wear on us find someone to talk to who knows what they are doing friends are great but sometimes they don t have the experience to offer as much help as you need so feel free to go beyond that circle counselors help lines pastors doctors are all great resources and can connect you with resources to help you deal
