recently introduced me to jack kornfield born in 1945 at camp lejeune nc raised jewish on the us east coast graduated from dartmouth college in 1967 in asian studies after switching from pre med he joined the peace corps and asked to be assigned to a buddhist country he served in thailand and studied buddhism there as well as in india and burma kornfield is a veteran buddhist teacher he co founded the insight meditation society in barre massachusetts then he co founded the spiritrock meditation center in california in 1984 the year his daughter caroline was born his major life themes i reflected on america s buddhist moment that occurred a few months ago by reading an old david pham article buddhist monks bring walk for peace to washington dc and a less than 5 minute abc news video of the monk s journey from fort worth to dc it was encouraging to see the growth of the visibly touched crowds that welcomed them as they walked buddhism is self consciously a philosophy rather than a religion the non confrontational spirit of the monks from fort worth was a refreshing lesson for americans of all persuasions perhaps particularly so for those who have been steeped in a competitive or confrontational religion such as some forms of christianity or islam i think of buddhism as an added healing balm or flavor as i drifted off to sleep i thought of the pre war war of 1812 last week a friend directed me to a 2025 article in the atlantic about an often ignored group black loyalists one of them was a slave named harry born in africa around 1740 harry was sold to george washington in 1763 he was one of 20 slaves to flee mount vernon when lord dunmore virginia s royal governor offered emancipation to slaves willing to fight with the british harry washington enlisted with the black pioneers britain s first black regiment their motto was liberty for slaves by the war s end some 20 000 black americans had served as active members of the british military about three times as many as had fought as patriots and many tens of thousands more had fled plantations to support the king s cause by cooking cleaning and caring for livestock from the atlantic his inauguration as president in 1800 jon meacham has provided a framework for reflection in these days leading up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence sally hemings one of jefferson s slaves entered my consciousness in 1998 with the news that her descendants dna indicated thomas jefferson also was their ancestor it was during our tour of monticello and subsequently reading meacham that i grasped the significance of the jefferson hemings relationship that personal relationship embodies the searing tragedy of our founders failure to abolish slavery at or soon after the nation s beginning jefferson knew slavery was evil he tried and failed on several occasions to move virginia the colonies and the nation toward the abolition of slavery even as he enjoyed its benefits sally hemings is an inspiring example of strength courage and fidelity the science of dna has given us a fuller understanding of thomas jefferson the hemings jefferson relationship amplifies the importance of the declaration of independence and jefferson s other writings even if he was unable to grasp their full implications there s much about our heritage that i
